Help with "Tom Waits" megaphone vocal effect

Hi,

Im trying to produce a vocal track with an effect that emulates Tom Waits singing through a megaphone.  I tried using the Vocal Strip "Old Vinyl" preset but its not quite there.  I have X1 Producer effects and guitar Rig4.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You can get close with some drastic EQ and a strategically placed verb. Roll off lows and highs, boost mids, and apply verb to taste. It may sound more like a telephone than a verb but it will get you in the ballpark.

    Thanks,
That did get me halfway there, I appreciate that advice, I was focused more on effects than basic EQ.

Maybe a little bit of distortion too now that I think about it.

I checked out your music, Fog People, on Rhapsody, just awesome!  If you don't mind my critique, and certainly I dont mean to pigeon hole your band, but it has elements of Roger Waters and Tom Waits, two of my favorite artists.  Wonderful mix/production.  Did you create this with Sonar? I love your panning and vocals.

I'm envious of your creativity, just fantastic!  Thank you.

    Hey thanks man! Much appreciated.

Tom Waits is definitely an influence (via some deep electronics). I'm a big Roger Waters fan too, I have Radio KAOS on vinyl somewhere around here...

Yeah, the whole thing was made in SONAR (versions 5-7 or so I think).

And hey, when I started that record I was just a sound designer who knew very little about music, so there's hope for all of us! :-)

I usually use an amp sim or distortion plugin for that kind of effect.

I like the comment somebody left: Those flickers of static aren't caused because this video was taped from a crusty old VHS cassette, that's just what happens when you look directly at Tom Waits.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

ive experimented a lot with this to various results. now i use this all the time. try a chain of vst fx thats something like this:

    eq->springverb->dist->eq

with both eq's rolling off hi's and lo's.
for some reason, doing two eq's sounds better. im not sure if thats the physical model of an actual megaphone, but it sounds close.

for springverb, i use the free psp one from computer music
for dist, i use anything really buy my favorite free one is Cyanide 2.

---that reminds me-- this would be a great use for a convolution spike of a megaphone, something like the company did with their megaphone samples.
