Help with Vocal White Noise

I use Sonar 8.5 Producer and Cakewalk/Roland UA 25 ex. I'm trying to eliminate the white noise from the vocals during mixing and would like some suggestions on how to do it. I record the vocals into sonar without sound proofing or a sound booth. I understand that this is probably not the preferred method and given that I'm doing it this way some noise is expected. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated...Thanks...

    White noise?  Don't record it.

Not really sure what your problem is here.  White noise is just a steady state, evenly distributed noise.  If you are recording it, it has to come from somewhere and I doubt seriously anything in your recording enviorment is causing it.

Probably you are cranking the input to the mic too high, boosting the ambient noise in your system and recording it along with the wanted signal.  Or it could be a bad cable.  Or a bad mic.  Or a bad something.

So, turn down the mic preamp or line in or whatever.

    Try switching cables.

IF all else fails turn off the overhead fan. ;-)

Thanks, for the reply..I will give that a try. I've been using the same mic for a bout 7 years Shure SM57 and it's seen it's been dropped several times. So i guess it's time to get a new mic and cable....

If you can record in a reasonaly quiet environment, you should simply be able to edit out the silence between the vocal lines.
I record in my urban apartment with the windows closed and no other room compensation.    Simply cut/deleting between the lines is more than enough.

If it's drowning out the singing, i think it's time for a new mic.

i record vocals in a room in my house. No sound proofing and if a truck, train or motorcycle happens to go by..... well.... I record it again.

White noise..... do you mean hiss?

That comes from having preamp levels turned up really high.  With the 57, you want to be eating that mic when you sing. Get close so you don't have to crank the gain.  Use proper technique and or a pop filter. If you try to record at much more than 12 inches you will pick up a ton of room noise and ambience, so get in close.

A nice condenser mic will let you record further out. I use a Rode at about 2' for my acoustic guitar, and with in 6" or so for vocals.

A bad cord might give you noise, but I'm thinking hiss is likely from gain levels turned up way to high.

White noise can also amplify from Voxformer and other compressors, in my experience.

I've had outstanding success cleaning white noise, pink noise, hum, pops, static, and rumble, succinctly with Waves Z-Noise.  Just be aware waves plugs still require 32-bit Sonar to run optimally.
