Help with alesis multimix and sonar X1, latency issue, direct monitoring

hello, I am extremely new to home recording! I also have the Alesis Multimix 8 USB 2.0. It came with cubase LE. I got a version off Sonar X1 and would love to start using it instead of cubase. having trouble with my audio settings. recording fine but I'm trying to use guitar rig 4 with recording. I've spent 3 days on line trying to figure it out with no luck. I am hearing a latency issue with the effect. I can't figure out which routing buttons to push on mixer (i.e' 2tk to mix/2 tk to ctrl rm/ mix to crtl rm) I can hear dry signal fine. but once I hit Input/Echo in sonar there's a delay even w/o efx from guitar rig. I've read a ton of stuff about turn off direct monitoring but no descriptions of how to do it with my mixer or if that's my problem. Extra info: I installed sonar a year after installing my drivers for alesis multimix, not sure if thats causing problems. We3nt into sonar's preferences and fooled with latency and output settings no luck. Any help would be appreciated!

Hi. I have the same Multmix  as you and all my recording programs work, that is with no or very low latency. I dont have the echo problem when I select input monitoring.

The Mulimix mix main outs are going to my sound card and to get the led meters working I use the "mix to ctrl room" switch. The other two are off. I dont use the Multimix for playback so my setup may be different to yours but it works.

You should be using drivers for what ever audio interface you are using.

Sorry I cant be of more help.

    Best of luck.

no disrespect intended, but you're not using the multimix the same way and there's a very good reason you're not getting latency - you're only using the multimix as a mixer, not as a soundcard.  the OP wants to use the multmix as a soundcard (usb).

thebillshow:  unfortunately for you the multimix 8 USB is not a great unit IMO because it doesn't have its own drivers.  it uses the USB CODEC and those are not written for efficient low latency recording.  IMO you have 2 choices:
    1) take/send it back and get your money back and get a better interface (I have recommendations on my website)  (Best option, IMO)
    2) you can try ASIO4ALL and see if that helps.  it should, it does for most of these units, but I can't guarantee it.  google ASIO4ALL, download it, unzip it, install it, then change your DRIVER MODE in Sonar to ASIO.

I've had multimix fgor close to a year now so returning is out and dont have funds for new interface for now. soooo, I installed the asio4all. It's 10 time better. went from more than a second to maybe a couple of milisec. any other suggestions? its almost there! extra info: input drivers are the alesis usb adio device, output drivers are same (I can see asio4all audio output but wont let me select it, should I be able to?), sampling rate 44100 asio reported latencies input 7.3 msec, 324 samples output 32.7 msec, 1440 samples total roundtrip 40.0 msec, 1764 dithering rectagular and i have selected share drivers with other programs (not sure what this is)

ooops I forgot I do have an SB LIve sound card in this computer but could never get it installed when switched to Windows 7. Also have the generic sound card that came with the computer that is installed Realtek high definition audio. would it be befificial to use one of these as mavafamusic does?

OK! I just figured it out! driver settings, open asio panel and changed it to 128 samples - 4.4ms/ 15.6ms. I can barely hear the latency now. tried to go lower to 49 samples - 2.7ms/ 12.3ms but not any better. I think its to a point I can comfortably record but is this setting OK to use? Am I gonna have trouble by using this setting later in projects?

You're on a roll! The only way you would be likely to have problems with the lower latency is after you've added a lot of tracks or instruments. It's common to keep the latency low during the recording phase (tracking) then change to a higher latency for mixing if your system needs that.

+1^  you don't have to have low latency unless you're monitoring real time with FX or softsynhts, you can increase the latency if you start getting pops, clicks and stuttering.
