Help with automation problem?
Hi All, I am experiencing a problem with automation with a project I have been working on for a year or so. I guess I must be doing something wrong, but I don't know what. When I click on the write automation button in the console view, the settings for the track change from where they were to "other" settings. i.e. the main slider, pan, and send parameters that are enabled by the automation. Is there a way of resetting the automation, or a control somewhere I need to be aware of? I have tried this on another old project and it seems to work fine. I am using the latest version of Platinum. Any suggestions? Thanks, sja

Sorry, but it's not entirely clear what you are trying to do. Could you explain a little further please? FWIW, I never use write automation - I start by selecting the relevant envelope via the Edit Filter and edit it as appropriate. If I want to draw in automation by moving a slider/knob, right click that control and choose Automation Write Enalbe, then move the control as the project plays

Hi Jonesy, Thanks for the reply. I am trying to add automation to a track to change the volume of the track through different parts of the song. Normally I do this using a fader on my control surface. The problem that I have is that when I enable the write automation button on that track, the slider, pan and send control change to another value. It seems that it also isn't recording the movement of the volume slider. In this case, I am trying to ride the fader to make the synth strings a bit more realistic during the song. It seems to be something weird with this project that I don't have with others, so I am wondering if there is some global automation setting that I need to play with. Thanks, sja

I believe your biggest problem is you've spent a whole year working on one project . but seriously though, you might be in offset mode (click the offset button in the control bar) It looks like this: See if that helps. if it doesn't, change it back to where it was (in non offset mode) As BJ said, you can also right click on a fader, pan knob, send knob, exc to see the Automation menu status. Write mode is on/off Read mode is on/off to check the automation, open the lane up for that track. you will see exactly whats going on. but if Read enabled is not "On" (The big "R" in the track header/console strip) automation wont happen.

Try deleting your automation lane on the track you are working on. Then set your fader (the slider, pan and send control) where you initially want it before adding a new automation lane. Now add a new automation lane. If you are just trying to do volume changes throughout the song, do not enable the the write button on the actual track, enable it on the automation lane only.

Thanks for the help guys. Chuck - I think you are right. My biggest problem is working on something from a year (or more) ago.....the song just hasn't been that inspiring.... In the end I opened the individual automation lane, and used that to do my volume changes. That worked (more or less). There is still something screwy with the project. Unless I am in "write" mode, the actual fader (on screen and control surface) will not move. If I turn the write off, the sound will follow the automation profile, but I get no visual feedback that it is working (I can see the automation graphic showing what I have recorded using the fader). When I open up another project, it automation works as expected, so there must be some gremlin in the project, or there is some setting I am not aware of. Anyway, I can finish things off now, so thanks again for the help and suggestions you guys. I might post the end result in the songs section eventually (just one more re-record on a guitar..........) sja

I've experienced some abnormalities opening projects from last year as well. not many but a few. are you using a custom skin ? possibly a graphics issue to do with an older project. anyway, glad its sorted (Somewhat )

Hi Chuck, No custom skin and my Win 7 only (with "virtually" no other programs loaded) system hasn't changed as far as I am aware. I have loaded other older projects that seem fine. Anyway, now I should complete, and move to other new horizons. Thanks again for you thoughts on this (thanks to Jonesey and Kingsy too). sja
