Help with my Roland GR-55?
I'm trying to set up my new Roalnd GR-55 guitar synth to record my Midi tracks, and to save my life I can't figure this out. I normally use my Yamaha digital piano via midi cables to my Focusrite Saffire and it's pretty effortless. Here, I am using the GR-55's USB cable. But can I still use my Focusrite to handle the audio while my GR-55 handles the Midi? That's how I'm trying to do this - with the Saffire as my audio interface, and the GR-55 as my Midi device. I can select both in my X1 preferences. Then on my Midi track I select the 55 (omni) as the input and (in this case) GPO as the output. But no matter what I do I can not get a sound from my instrument. If I click the keys within the GPO window itself I can hear it, just not when playing my guitar which is plugged into the 55. Hope all that makes sense. I'm positive it's something I'm doing wrong, but can someone perhaps walk me through the steps of getting this to work? And save me my sanity in the process? Thank you!

The only thing I can say,.. it took me over an hour to get it to work.. besides configuring the midi port of the Roland, I had to adjust the sensitivity on the Roland again to make midi work on all strings. I wasn't very pleased with the result that I'd get using Midi. Quite some latency and wrong notes all over the place, the internal sounds of the GR-55 work ok so I'll stick to them. You might get better results when you spend more time with it. I used the standard midi-connector, might be behaving a bit different than using usb. Just powered up the Gr-55: SYSTEM - MIDI/USB-GENERAL (Patch 2; RX ON; TX ON; OFF,OFF,1) GTR-MIDI: (Switch ON; Mode POLY; OFF, 1,ON,1,11,...) RX PC MAP: (Bank 0; MAP SELECT FIX) hth

Ok, thanks - I'll try that. I think my machine is buggy. It will not save any of my patch changes. I'm just figuring this out as I'm giving it it's first good test drive tonight. But I can load a patch, change some things and save the changes to a user patch and when I go back to it - the patch is back to how it was before I changed it. Make sense? I'm going to shoot a video of it over to Sweetwater and see if they can tell me something. I am NOT impressed with the unit yet. I consider myself a very clean player, and trying to play anything simple on that grand piano patch is impossible. I'll tweak on the settings some more. Hopefully I can get it to at least work in Sonar. Thanks for your quick reply.

those patch changes.. yeah I am aware of that issue.. in fact that's how it's supposed to work.. for one you have to make sure to save the preset in the user area.. and then you have to check if the "volume" and/or "control" button is not assigned to a sound parameter.. sometimes you want to turn off a sound-layer and it keeps turning on when you recall that patch.. that's due to the control-button.. well.. not very user friendly.. the unit is not defective! and I agree with your conclusion so far.., but you really have to make those string-length/sens-adjustments to get the most out of it.. There are some unique sounds that you can get.. strings work perfect (lol).. and sound great behind a clean guitar.. some sax-sounds are also very nice..

I dunno - I think my unit may be defective. Will you watch this 2 minute YouTube video I just uploaded that shows my problem? And let me know if you can reproduce the same issue. (video has been removed - issue solved)

Have you ever used an Axon controller before?

Have you ever used an Axon controller before? No, have not had the chance. I've been through a GR-33, GR-20 and a GI-20, and now the GR-55. I've always thought the Axon seemed very intriguing.

So you've had success with the other controllers?....then you may have a bum unit as you mentioned. I don't have a GR-55 to assist with settings.

"and trying to play anything simple on that grand piano patch is impossible" How does it track using TTS-1 Nylon guitar? Unlike the piano, this voice supports pitch bend.

How does it track using TTS-1 Nylon guitar? Unlike the piano, this voice supports pitch bend. I just tried it and I thought it was very playable. I could move around at will on the fretboard and it followed me just fine. Now if I can get my patch memory problem fixied I'll probably keep the unit. It really is cool, other than a few glitches. Has anyone watched my Youtube video to offer a suggestion??

I watched it. But as Mr. Haas mentions in post #4, this is a common problem. I suspect the issue is being worked. I noticed parameter changes were being made with the pedal, does the unit not support a software package to allow editing via computer?

That does not make me feel better. This unit may be going back. And no - I did no changes with the pedal. All was simply done with buttons on the front. Tried to keep things simple. I may send back to Sweetwater and buy another when the bugs are worked out. Strange! Yeah - you can do your changes in the Windows software package, but I get the same results with that. Thanks to all for taking the time to chime in. I thought I'd be the only one up this late.

yepp.. just seen the video.. my "workaround" was to turn the volume of those "layers" to 0 and save it.. that works right out of the box.. you need to verify if the "ctl" button is assigned to sound 1 & 2.. it's a pita.. but that's how the designers wanted the device to work.. if you find the assignment..delete it.. and you can save the patch to your liking.. I haven't done any editing for 8 weeks.. I have to get used to it myself again..

Funny - I'm starting nights on Friday - that's the same reason I'm staying up late. Trying to prepare for it! Thanks for your help.
