Help with setting up Mic using USB so that mic track records only vocal?
Next up is setting up a vocal track to record along with the instrument tracks. For some reason the Audio track I set up for the mic records the instrument tracks as well. How do I isolate the mic track to record only the vocal? I'm using headphones so that the mic won't pick up speaker audio. Also, I have the mic input as a usb. Have a new Dell 7000 series computer. Thanks so much, little bit by little bit.... Marsi

What audio interface are you using?

Hi. Which driver mode do you use? Have you set your input to only use the USB mic input? All the best.

Hi, I'm using the Asio4all driver and have a usb mic cord I set the input to usb mic and output to the asiodriver. Also, when I work in Sony Vegas, the audio tracks work fine and I'm able to record just one. I'd like to do the vocals in X2 so I can tweak the midi files as I go. Any help is appreciated! Thanks, Marsi

It sounds like a routing issue to me. When selecting input, do you see more than one input? if so, try selecting a mono input. The same goes for output. Do you have any other options than ASIO4ALL? Perhaps set up a buses for your vocals, and route from there, out to main out / ASIO4ALL?

Hi, Thanks, I selected mono for the input and set it to MME for the audio driver for vocals. Was able to record the vocal on one track as I played the other midi tracks. Vocal signal is weak tho'. Thoughts? When I record from my Alesis controller, I need to set it back to ASIO4all because of latency. Thanks for your help! Marsi

Which version of SONAR do you have? If you are using the latest version of SONAR, I would rather suggest you use WASAPI mode, compared to MME, which gives terrible latency.

Regarding level, it might be down to your preamp / USB mic, and whether or not it gives enough "juice" to accommodate a decent recording level. As long as / if you are using 24 bit (depth), low recordings shouldn't be an issue. You can just raise the volume afterwards.

Hi, I'm using X2 for now, windows 10 on a brand new high powered Dell 7000. When I record midi, the only driver that works with no latency is ASIO4all. Thanks for your time and help, Marsi

Have you tried the WASAPI drivers? They might give the same latency.. Win 10 has made some improvements in that (WASAPI) area.

If you are halfway serious about making music on your computer I really recommend getting a dedicated audio interface. It will save you a lot of headache. The Focusrite Scarlett series gets recommended a lot and has options in many price classes. A budget of 150/200 bucks gets you in the "decent" area.

I have a Focusrite Solo that I use with my laptop, and it is really nice for the price I would suggest something like that, if funds allows it

There you go. I'm afraid I have to add that USB mics are the worst invention for low latency audio production, it's a shame people still get tricked into buying these. I hope yours has a regular XLR output too so you can hook it up to an interface/preamp.

+1 I will agree with that. While I understand the OP is probably just trying to get manageable results, its always baffled me how someone can spend hundreds of dollars on software and forget about the most important part.. The soundcard. And microphone for that matter. I wish I had something helpful to add to this thread. My apology's.

Having the sound card set to "Stereo Mix" usually leads to unwanted bouncing of existing tracks.
