Help/Advice

Hello all, I've been using Cakewalk Home Studio 7 with a Pentium 4 Windows XP pro OS for years. I've upgraded to a 64 bit Windows 7 OS Laptop. The only thing I use this for is running MIDI files. I edit the sounds using my keyboard and simply use it to learn and practice guitar. My question is can I get this sofware to work with my new PC? And since my MIDI interface cable has no place to hook up with my new laptop (it has an old multi-pin connector) I am guessing I have to buy a MIDI to USB cable? If I can not use my current software any longer I guess I'll upgrade to something else. Just have no idea what. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.        Andrew

Let me add that my Cakewalk program isn't labeled "SONAR" it just reads "Cakewalk Home Studio 7" . I'd like to know the difference there also. Thanks again.....

That's a very old version. I doubt it will work with 64bit Windows. The latest version of that program is called Sonar X1 Essentials and its quite a bit different than what you're used to so be prepared for a learning curve.

Another concern is your hardware. To use Windows 7 64-bit, your soundcard must have a 64-bit Windows 7 driver. Most do, but some older ones don't. If you're just using the built-in sound on the new computer that will probably work for what you're doing. You will need a MIDI interface, but be careful because chances are those cheap USB to MIDI cables will not have a 64-bit driver. I returned one last year for that reason. Consider getting something like the Cakewalk UM-1G or the MIDISport 1x1.

The Box reads 1998 release so yes it is old. In software years I guess that's like 456 years old. I want to be able to tie my keyboards in to my laptop. I need something that will allow me to output to my small PA. The sounds are actually coming from my keyboards and guitar not my PC.

The pre listed interfaces do not seem to have any MIDI ins or outs so I think I need something a little more feature rich than those.

for a laptop I'd recommend you buy an external USB interface that already includes MIDI I/O ports.  something like the m-audio or EMU series.

but when you say the sounds are coming from the keyboards and guitar and not your pc - I'm not sure what you're asking about there  are you wanting to monitor from the PC?  then put the INPUT ECHO on each of your tracks.

or you can use an external interface to monitor directly.

check my website for soundcard recommendations (for laptop you need USB or firewire - but only if you have firewire ports on the laptop and only if the chipset is TI).

They most certainly do. They connect to your laptop via USB. You should look into getting an audio interface like the Fast Track Pro that will give you MIDI and audio. Using the built-in sound on a laptop is not going to give you very good results.

Maybe I'm not being clear or my lack of experience with this is showing. My old system was simply MIDI I/O from my keyboard to my desktop using a serial multi-pin connector. The sound was then fed from the outputs of my keyboard straight to the mixer in a small PA set up. Unless I'm mis-understanding but I didn't think my sound card in my PC had much to do with anything. I do want to be able to do a little more with it now but as I wrote the MIDI Interface cable is useless seeing there is no serial connector on my laptop. Also the age of the CakeWalk program I have (Home Sudio 7 circa 1998) may be a problem using a 64 bit laptop. So all that aside, I want to run MIDI I/O to USB and still run my keyboard output to my mixer but I would also like to be able to record voice and guitar on my laptop then somehow output everything to my mixer (hard mixer, not the software mixer). I mainly work with MIDI files and use them to learn and practice with. What interface and program do you folks recommend for me to get this up and running again?

Sonar Essentials X1 or Sonar Studio X1 or Sonar Producer X1 will all do what you want.  (Essentials will only run as a 32bit app but it will run on a 64bit machine).

the fast track pro that dave recommended will do what you want (without buying a separate MIDI/USB cable) or there are others.  you could also go with a PCI card since you already have a mixer, but when you went to record voice and guitar you'd need to use the mixer's preamps for that.  with the fast track pro or similar external device, those come with the preamps in them.

again - check my website for recommendations.

You will need to buy MIDI cables, though, instead of the serial cable you now have (MIDI to gameport?). Still, that's cheaper than a MIDI-to-USB converter.
