Here's one I am trying not to suck at finishing! Rock/Pop Punk

The guy who's out front on vocals for this one (we trade up instruments a lot with this band) wrote this song for his wife, he came into practice with a recording on his Iphone where he had sung the lyrics and vocal melody as they came to him in the car.  We put this song together in about an hour from there.   Rehearsed it, and played it out a few times and it goes over well so we decided to lay it down.  I am not quite finished up, but I think the mix is getting there!
I am on the rythem guitars (left) and back vocals on this one.

And input is welcomed as always!  Thanks guys.

Cool! Great performances!  There might be a few pitch problems on the main vocal.

Well played and kudos for getting in done so quickly.  :)

I like this song.  It has a Foo Fighters vibe that's hard rock and melodic.  The performances are impressive.  I had trouble picking the bass guitar out of the mix, however.  I could hear it, but I couldn't feel it.  Otherwise, well done.

    All the best,

    Thanks Janet,
I've gotta get/find a more useable program or get a better grasp on V-vocal.  When it's me, I retrack it, when it's others I try to fix it with V-vocal and it either doesn't really do it or it starts to sound really unatural.  I also don't have any keys/synths in the song for the correction to feed off of either.  What settings do you guys use as a starting point when somebody is a little flat/sharp to get good results?

    Lynn,
Thank you! Foo Fighters... I can deal with that suppose!   What are you listening on?  It seems to sound good in my truck, and on 2 different sets of cans though I did notce that the bass is lacking on my little laptop speakers.  Maybe I need to bring up the 2nd & 3rd harmonics on the bass track a bit.

    Good song. Good feel.

Put some clack on the bass guitar (1.5K to 2.5K boost, experiment) to give it some definition. Guitars could use a tad sparkle at about 1K.

    Good start.

Cool punking popper.  Great energy (i always love this genre).
Mix sounds like guitar tone is blending in with crash cymbol.  that khz, whatever it is needs to be looked at as does the low end....drums are kind of not clear.

    Great tunage there!

The vocals could come up a bit. Rather than the left and right at the end with them, leave the main in the center and spread the rest out around it.

    IE: From left to right

    BV---guitar---BV----(drums, bass vox)---BV---Guitar---BV

Obviously leave the toms and cybals with their panning.

Excellent work! I'll check it out again when I can hear on better speakers.

Notation, the original DAW. Everything else is just rote. We are who we are and no more than another. Humans, you people are crazy.

    Nice. Definite Foo vibe.
As mentioned above, the mix is straying into a little muddiness.
Levels seem fine, but I think if you play with panning, as GP suggested, and possibly some notching EQ, you'll get everything to pop into place.
I like the energy. Work it. You are 90% there.

    -  yeah, this is one of the 1st times I thought the mix was real close and close enough to add a little color and dial in in mastering.  I used the sonitus for HPF, LPF, and a little bump around 245 to gve the guitars a little umph, then the Lp64 to add a little sparkle to the mix and bump the low end by about 1.5db  but I think I will end up going back and revisiting the mix now.    As noted above- the bass needs a little high end, I want to do something with that crash, and I think the vocals need some sparkle/clarity too.  On some systems they sound a little muffled.  I thank you all for your input and opinions.  As always, the members here are the best!

I've had the singer completely retrack this one, and we also started doing this drum roll intro so everyone in the band kinda jumps as the song kicks in live so we decided to overdub that into the recorded version since we haven't released it yet.   Then I remixed it.
It sounds close to me after cheking on some other systems, but I think the guitars need a bit more grunt and the bass needs a bit less in the 60hz range.  But it's coming along! and I love the new intro.

hey Chuck - good song - not much to add that hasn't been said already.

for v-vocal - do everything by individual moving, don't ever click on the "Correct" button for pitch (I do use the correct button to smooth out vibrato sometimes, but not for pitch).  click and drag only for pitch.

there's a lot of upper / mid-upper highs in there which are "annoying" to me.  probably coming from the distorted guitars and/or the overheads on the drums.

    good work!

I like the chord progression, and I like the melody.  I dont see any voice issues for the genre.

But as to the mention of V-Vocal .  It's far - farFAR better to just re-sing a verse or line until you nail it.  However, after you've done that, the next day you might find a note slightly flat or sharp, you can fix that.  But as the old saying goes, you can't polish a turd.  So when you use V-Vocal, make sure what your working is not a turd, if you know what I mean.  If it's very close you can fix it.  This however is NOT a turd.

I don't see any issues with this at all.  I'm no expert on punk, but this sounds pretty clean to me.  Nice tune.  Very catchy.

I really like what you've done with this.
The vox and gits may be a tad bright, but to be honest, it adds to the hard driving live feel of the song.
This begs to be cranked up, so I did. Several times. That guitar is just smokin'.
If anything, I might want to hear a little more punch from the bass in the section from 2:40 to 3:20. It's playing a starring role here, but not quite stepping up. Very close, though.
I'm bumping this up to 98%. For the genre, it's right there.

He sounds just like the dude from Smashmouth! Agreed, guitars need some sparkle - or presence. And the vocal is flat almost the whole song. The chorus seems to be more in tune.

Definitely pop punk though. Very cool. I know how hard it is to get to this point live - so I commend you. good work.

Beagle, Thanks for the comments on V vocal. I try not to use it much.
"there's a lot of upper / mid-upper highs in there which are "annoying" to me.  probably coming from the distorted guitars and/or the overheads on the drums.
    good work! "
This cracked me up...  That was annoying... Good JOB!

Daryl,  Thank you sir...  I try not to post my turds.  No use airing out your dirty laundry for all the word to see!  haha :)

Robert-I appreciate you taking the time to listen again.  I am still working this and will have a listen for the bass in that bridge, maybe automate it a bit.  It's only in the last couple tracks that I have been starting to really tinker with automation (other than ridingfaders for vocals).  On this song in the intro I have the 2 guitars automating back and forth a bit to direct attention to different parts of each riff.  I wondered if I had over done it but no one has mentioned it so I think it's working  for this song.  ;)

Joshua- I have never heard him compared to smashmouth but that's cool, I'll relay the compliment.  Hadn't noticed the flat vocal but will check again.  This is not a "live recording" though if it has a "live vibe" I am happy with that too.

Chuck, I've not heard you post anything close to a turd by a long shot, just looking for an analogy of what can be done with V-Vocal.

I know from experience early on I tried polishing some turds with V-Vocal, and the old saying is true, it can't be done.

Again, for this genre, and what I know about it, I hear nothing in the vocal that grabs me as flat or out of tune, and I'm usually pretty senstive to out-of-tune vocals.  It all seems to set pretty well.
