I'm not sure why Cakewalk is hesitating on the VST3 bit - VST3 is supposed to be backwards compatible with VST2.4, and possibly even older versions. There is probably a pretty good reason, at least from their perspective.

I don't know what Cakewalk's reason is, but if I was running a software company, my reason would be there aren't that many VST3 plug-ins on the market. From what I understand, the amount of work to port something from VST2 to VST3 is considerable, so a company has to judge whether their time is better spent doing ports that appeal to a limited number of users running a limited number of DAWs, or something more universal.

When most DAWs support VST3, more VST3 plug-ins will become available, and more companies will have an incentive to support it. I do not know if there are licensing fees involved, but I do know there are licensing agreements, mostly involving liability.

Hey, I have zero problems with people having their own opinions. But you can't really have discussions with people who have their own facts, so whenever possible, I try to present the facts of a situation so people can draw more accurate conclusions than if they base conclusions on things that aren't true.

Installed 6.4.0 this evening and not working.  Distortion and no response from plugin. Plugins show as 32bit not 64 bit if viewed  as default in plugin manager. Back to 6.3.0 for me.

Again, with the new UAD 64bit plugs you have to "apparently" have both the default UAD folder that the VST plugs get installed into...but also a Program Files/Steinberg/VST plugins as well.  Check above in this thread and in the others about the new UAD 64 bit plugs.  Many of us do have the new 64bit version installed and running hot straight and normal.

PS:  I'm with ya Craig, ol pal.  But ol Freddie is a persistant cuss with a single minded approach to almost everything...so don't be too taken aback by his convoluted logic.  He's really a pretty nice feller at the end of the day.  As are you.

UAD 64bit is working great on my s\system.  I did have to go find them and put them in the proper folder.

I'm still interested as to whether anyone is actually having difficulties with Sonar and the 6.4 update, either 32 or 64 bit?

It doesn't seem to me to be causing any problems so I'm not sure what ANY of the anxiety is about especially since Craig has gone to the trouble of finding out and clarifying the situation.

There was a broken update for 3 weeks prior to the major transition to 64 bit and all of a sudden a huge doubt springs out of nothing.

Yay, I have no more bridged plug-ins on my system, it's a good day today!  Whats more short of my DSP card going up in smoke I'll be able to use this exact same set-up in 25 years time and it'll be working just like it is today.  It's already had more longievity than most hardware I've ever owned and it's still current.  Pretty cool I reckon.

They state they will only support Cubase? Isn't that the same don't you think?

Did you even READ the first post?

Are you aware that Cubase supports VST2 plug-ins? Are you aware that if VST3 hosts can support VST2 plug-ins, and if the market for VST2 plug-ins is WAY LARGER than for VST2 plug-ins, companies that aren't terminally stupid will continue producing VST2 plug-ins?

Please read the first post to understand the difference between how UA defines qualifying a platform and supporting a platform.

Yes I have read and I know you can use VST2 plugins too. I know Cubase platform very well thank you.
I'm saying that if you have a plugin that support VST3 noone (in right mind) will downgrade and use the VST2 version in Cubase, StudioOne etc that do support VST3 already. Its like the same and as likely as a SONAR x64-user want to use the x32bit plugins instead of the x64 in SONAR x64? It will never happen!!!

Also VST3 has far much better functionality then VST2 both in Cubase and other platforms and it use lower CPU in use too. So why bother make two version of same plugin when everyone will only use the VST3 version in Cubase. End of the day it is only Cubase that we at UAD do support on windows platform. The rest that doesn't have VST3 embedded doesn't qualifying to support UAD platform.

We wasn't born yesterday, you know!   I have long experience about this so I know exactly how companies think and work to earn money.
A more then likely UAD support answer in the future: We are sorry your SONAR platform doesn't support VST3 yet. We are sorry but you need VST3 for UAD function correctly. Please contact support at Cakewalk. They doens't qualifying to support UAD platform yet.

Only problem I’ve had with the 6.4 is that the meters of the Shadow Hill Mastering Compressor don’t always work: I use several instances in a project as buss compressors. The controls work and the SHMC sounds great, so it’s only a minor annoyance. You should use your ears and not your eyes for adjusting the settings, anyway...

I was glad to hear that UAD was now supporting x64.  But, when I wnet to download the new drivers, I saw that they only worked on a UAD2 card, NOT on my UAD1.  So, am I obsolete and never to get 64 bit compatability?  Is the card unable to support 64 bit?

I think the decision to not support Sonar with 6.3.2 was very inconsiderate. It appears someone knew that x64 was near and they made a call to leave Sonar users hanging for a few months.

I also blame Cakewalk to some extent as it indicates a less than adequate relationship they have with Universal Audio. If the two companies were closer then there would be some communication and possibly partnering, at the very least communication to the user base, to resolve the issue.

They didn't decide not to support Sonar with 6.3.2. They screwed up, but they fixed it less than 30 days later with 6.4.

However, not as bad a screwup as the ADAT EPROM update that didn't stop the tape after it hit the end of the reel after rewinding Humans are involved. Mistakes are made whenever humans are involved.

Also, I know for a fact that UA and Cakewalk do communicate. Having a less than 30 day time frame is really pretty good for finding a problem, isolating it, fixing it, QCing it, and releasing a revision.

Would it have been better if 6.3.2 had been released without problems? Of course. Same for Vista, OS X, Core Audio aggregation on the Mac...

I give more credit to UA for knowing that the ultimate fix was coming in 30 days and somewhat communicating it.  There are issues with the Prochannel and honestly, I don't have a clue how soon a fix is coming for that.  How long has that been?

Yup...the UAD1 platform is now moribund (dead, left behind, a parrot that is no more).  You can still run older software versions (at least three or four iterations back or so) on them but they quit supporting UAD1 quite a while ago.  I still use to UAD1 cards in my commercial studio box as it's still 32 bit running Sonar 8.5.3.  But my music production computer is all UAD2 and 64bit (now).  Sorry Maury, ol pal.

I think a FAR more likely support answer will be to Cubase users, and will say: We are sorry, but as of now we do not produce plug-ins for the VST3 format. Until it is more widely adopted, most of our sales are to people using VST2, AU, and RTAS versions. Rest assured that we have qualified all our VST2 plug-ins for flawless operation with Cubase and they function 100% to the VST spec while working within Cubase. We are constantly monitoring the state of the market and when VST3 is supported by more hosts, then we will seriously consider transitioning over to the VST3 format. At the moment, it makes no economic sense for us to do so, as Cubase represents a significant portion of our sales, but not significant enough to abandon all hosts currently running VST2. Thank you for understanding.

My money is with Craig on this... I seriously doubt VST3 only support will come along any time soon.  Any plugins that I have seen that do support VST3 have versions for both and that's not going to change until there is A LOT more support for VST3 among the various hosts.

I know Freddie says he's been at this for a long time, but I was reading Craig's articles in industry magazines fairly early in my playing days and I know how long I've been at this.  He's not just some guy posting on an Internet forum.  He knows his stuff and has for a long time.

I got a reply from UA last night regarding the 'rumour' that Sonar support has been dropped.

Of course, it hasn't. UA has taken the (I'm guessing economical) stance that they will fully test on a few hosts. They went on to say that their plugs should work in any DAW that supports the VST protocol.

And, once again, their service staff were nothing but pleasant and cheery. I love those guys.

I'm late in stumbling across this issue (wanted to try out K-Stereo and was stopped dead in my tracks, so to speak).  This thread does give me some hope (and thanks for that) but I'm not spending another dime with UAD until I decide to go x64 and feel confident that other Sonar users are experiencing smooth sailing.  And I've spent many dimes on UAD up to this point.

BTW my system is Win7 x64, Sonar 8.5.2 32bit, UAD2 Quad.

Audio Damage once blamed Sonar (and my Logitech mouse!?) on the various issues I was having with their products - even claiming Sonar is not "native VST" (I started a thread on that here and it didn't gain much traction).  Anyway, I have since stopped doing business with them.  I will find it a bid harder to go cold turkey with UAD.  I'm still feeling a bit sick about all this...

Sorry if I veered off topic, just needed to rant a bit.  I'm stuck at 6.3.0 (maybe forever) and bummed about it.......

I've been all x64 for the last couple of months and everything is working as expected. Nice to be able to use my UAD plug-ins in a 64bit DAW app like SONAR without a bridge. I also have the 32bit versions installed to use with  the Harrison Mixbus as it is 32bit only. You just can't have the same SONAR version (goes for any DAW host) scanning and using both 32bit & 64bit UAD versions or you will have issues. It is either 32bit or 64bit per DAW host.
