Hey Dude! Where's my METRONOME?
I've spent the last two weekends installing and tinkering with my new EMU 0404 sound card and (thanks to this forum) figured out how to actually get sound out of it. But I can't get a single tick out of the metronome. I've set it to to play during recording, with a one measure lead in and tried using both the MIDI Note and Computer speaker settings to no avail. The MIDI out tab (under metronome settings) doesn't say anything about my soundcard. I followed the instructions in MC Help and created a MIDI track, set output to my MIDI instrument (EDIROL VSC), channet 10 (a nice drum click) I don't know about you guys, but multitrack without a metronome will be IMPOSSIBLE for me. A little help here, please? RMC

Remind me what program you're using. I don't know of anyone that has ever been able to get the metronome to work, except through a MIDI keyboard. The 'computer speaker' isn't the speaker(s) connected to your sound card (if any), but a little thing inside the computer so people who don't buy computer speakers can hear the noises the computer makes. And if you have that, the volume of the met through it will be so low as to be useless. Even with the MIDI keyboard metronome, it isn't loud enough to play along with, which is why most of us use some sort of drum program to play to. Greg

I think greg's got you mostly covered, I'd just suggest creating a click track from Edirol.

I'm using MC 2003 with a EMU 0404 and a Fatar 610 Plus MIDI controller keyboard (the keyboard has NO internal sounds). My previous setup was just a soundblaster card with the same controller, but I don't recall doing anything to get the metronome working. I just turned if off or on as I needed it and it "clicked" nicely along. Can you explain what you mean by "click track"? You aren't suggesting creating a track with a drum beat each quarter note are you? I'm sure that would be a "work-around", but it seems like there must be a way to get my metronome back. I can't wait to get started again on some half-finished projects (I'm sure no one ELSE has any of those lying around!!!), but without my metro, nothing much is happenin. As always, I'd appreciate any help and/or suggestions... RMc

Roger - the Soundblaster has an embedded softsynth, so when you play the MIDI metronome using MC, it used the soundcard's built in synth to play the clicks. The 0404 does not have a built in synth, nor does any of the "prosumer" sound cards. Since you no longer have an internal synth, then, YES, I am suggesting creating a track with a drum beat each quarter note (if your music is in X/4 Time Signature, that is! ). Yes, it's a work around, but you're also using older software. I know SHS4 (and I THINK MC3) allows you to use an audio met instead which you don't need a synth for at all.

In the metronome settings, try selecting the 'Audio' option. It allows selecting either MIDI or Audio for the metronome sound output. If that works, then at least you have some idea that the MIDI is not setup correctly.

He's using MC2003, and I am pretty sure that MC2003 does not have the AUDIO option for the Metronome - that's why I didn't suggest he use it.

You're correct, Beagle. I suppose the "click track" will have to do. As I posted a few weeks back, the only reason I didn't upgrade to MC3 (and it's Audio Metronome) is that it doesn't include a Session Drummer, and I don't have funds or desire to get yet ANOTHER add-on program for drums until I have a handle on this EMU card. Can't justify Sonar for just personal use (it includes a SD doesn't it?). So many things to learn and so few brain cells still functioning.... Thanks for all your help, forum members! RMc

Sonar 4 included session drummer, but Sonar 5 did not. Sonar 6 includes a new version called Session Drummer 2. Home studio 4 does not have session drummer, tho.

Thanks, Beagle. I'll check my wife's account frequently and as soon as she has enough money in there, I'll upgrade to Sonar (and RUN!). LOL

I have a question. There is a speaker icon in my taskbar. It is the color of gray. I was told that it should be yellow. Can this be the reason why I'm not getting any sound when I record in cakewalk creator 3. I have a sound blaster live soundcard. I am runing windows XP. I have a Fostex recorder going into line in jac.

Psalms, Grey should be ok. Click on the speaker icon. If I remember right, click "advanced" to get to Record Options. Make sure that "Line In" is checked. You should be able to record from your fostex after that. If you want to record from a different input, you will need to change this setting again. Hope that helps. Greek2Me, Sonar Home Studio 4 doesn't have Session Drummer, but it does have the Audio Metronome(everybody say "YEAH") and it gets along with the EMU. Sonar would be great if you can afford it, but SHS4 packs a lot of bang for $100.

Thanks Robert, I will check it out. Sounds like it has "Christmas" written across it!
