We had a grand time up in the Appalachian Mountains.

After 25 years of trying I was finally able to sit up on top of Craggy Gardens Bald as the Cahaba Rododendrum were blooming.

It was a long time coming and we just loved it.

The Cahaba flowers cover the mountain tops in big bold bright pink patches and the trails become blanketed with purple petals. But it only lasts for a week or so and its really hard to plan a trip. When it happens it happens... we've been there just before and we've been there just after, but this was the first time to get a chance to be there right when it was happening.

The orange Flame Azalea were in full bloom as well and though they have a longer season and a wider range they are always a special treat to enjoy.

We took a lot of invigorating baths in the many waterfalls hidden down in the forest valleys. I think we went to 13 different waterfalls... all deep in the forest on trails found crossing the infrequently used gravel forest roads. We swim and make music and have nice lunches on the rocks. Most of the time we are the only persons there.

It was a great way to beat the heat in Summer.

    Thanks for asking. :-)

Hope you're having a good summer too!

    best regards,
    mike

I took a bath once.  The setting was a little different.

Does getting scrubbed down by lab techs in HAZMAT gear count as a bath?

    Yours sounds more relaxing.

I'm guessing that yours didn't feature screams of, "For the Love of Grendel, What Is That Thing?!"

    Much more relaxing, then...

    :-)

This is Craggy Gardens Bald. It is a heath bald above the treeline and it is mostly covered with a tangle of rhododendron shrubs and a small grassy meadow that is easy to walk thru.

The color of the Cahaba Rhododendron seems surreal...

until you walk over and take a close look at the Flame Azalea and realize the whole experience is.  :-)

    best,
    mike
