Hey Red Barchetta
Your sig says you're a software engineer. Are you with one of the fun design-type companies downtown or a weed in one of the Intel farms? (I've contracted to both. ;-)

You know that area where you can auto-tune multiple cores? I did the speedometer graphics using Expression Blend, custom XAML and some C#.

Nice, but no, I don't know what you're talking about. I'm rather far away from the core business. All the stuff I work on is more sales and marketing focused.

Web stuff, lots of database stuff. Moving data from one system to another. Right now I'm currently working with the Adobe Flex platform. We have a sales app that gets data from an SAP system. It was written in Adobe Flex so it could run in multiple platforms. I really like it, it's great technology, however, it would appear as though it's going to come to a very slow death as HTML 5 begins to mature.

Yep, 'tis the nature of IT right now. Everyone wants an employee who's a specialist with five years of experience (and a bunch of expensive certificates), then what they know becomes obsolete...

hahaha... Man... The 486 was my first computer. I jumped onboard late. In fact, I wanted nothing to do with them at first. I was in college taking drafting courses, I was going to be a die hard manual pencil draftsman until the day I died. I was oldschool minded. Then I finally got to a point where I was FORCED to take my first AutoCAD class. I instantly fell in love. So, I went from hating computers to wanting to become a game programmer overnight. I was about 3/4 done with my drafting degree, up and changed it to software engineering... Rest is history. If I had only known, I would have stayed a draftsmen. I get tired of chasing technology around. It's got to be as bad as being a doctor.

I wouldn't mind getting back into C++ programming so I could start making some VSTs and or apps that can dig into Sonar like what ( hmmm, forget the guys name here on the board ) that one guy did with his app that allows you to modify colors in Sonar.

Well, I started as a young kid on an HP 2000 and even helped build a Heathkit computer (complete with 8" floppy drive - WOW!). I've used cards, but never had to use paper tape. I also used to be able to make space invaders or worm war on a Trash 80 with only 4k of memory... I also helped port Advent from Unix to the HP 2000 back in the early 70's ("A hollow voice goes 'Plugh!'"). *Sigh*

Ya... Too long and not enough of that time spent in fields I would have found fun. WAY too many financial applications - I wish I could have done game design, simulators or sound processing... Oh well. Ever hear about those 19 year-old punk kids getting jobs at defense contractors? That was me.

Not heard about the punk kids getting defense jobs, but have heard of the punk kids making killer games and becoming overnight millionairs. Like the creators of the game Doom. I've heard horror stories about game programmers being worked to death. Kinda glad that I didn't go that route. I started with C++ in college, never really touched it after that. Now, I'm starting to want to get back into it. It would be fun to write hardware control applications... If I do, the first one I'd creating is a control application for my Boss DR-880. Never really understood why Boss does not create cool software for their hardware devices like Line6 does.

HA... Yeah that is the one thing I DO NOT MISS about C++ and C is pointers. Good lord! C# is by far my favorite language. When I was in college, I had created some small little console app. It was like some simple input statement to read a key and print a key. Compiled it, ran it. All of a sudden the printer on my desk just started printing a bunch of jumblie goop. Not sure how I did it but I somehow got into some memory I should not have gotten into.

You know how an "in" joke requires explanation in order for it to be funny? Well, sometimes the explanation is so much trouble and the humor has so little payoff that it's not all that funny in the end. In the CH, there have been "special" moments. You know the kind. It's like the time you opened the cabinet and a can of beans fell on your head, knocking you to the floor in front of your In Laws, who took it as confirmation of their views of your intelligence. It stands out in your memory. It gets repeated ad nauseum by the In Laws. References to it take on a life of their own until they eclipse the original event itself. Becan. It's like that. It's 20-40% funnier than the original "special" moment. (Do a search through the CH on "20-40%" sometime. It's special, too.)

Man what a cool thread...it's great being a fly on the wall listening to you guys. :) For what it's worth...I got my start in programming with a.....gulp...Franklin Ace 1000. I then got a 2000. I have them both to this day and they work! LOL! Needless to say, I hated them. I hated DOS, still hate it and after creating a few little games and other assorted nothings, it just wasn't fun to me anymore. I stayed away from computers completely missing the whole Windows 3.1 thing. Got my first real computer running Windows 95 in 1996....THEN I was hooked! I think the whole "Apple DOS" was what turned me off from the Franklin. Win 95 was such a breath of fresh air. Glad I missed 3.1...whew! :) -Danny

That's right. I remember you said that before, Bapsi. I blame excessive references to DOS in this fred. I clearly suffer from a memory error.
