Hey Scott!!!

How is the new book coming?  I pre-ordered on Amazon the first day I found out.  No rush, but Amazon does not keep me up to date much

Oh, if you do a Kindle version, ask them to do it justice this time.  An Kindle Version would be enormously helpful (small and out of the way) but the Sonar 8 one was unreadable.

Good luck

Some people call me Maurice

SPLAT Pro lifetime, ADK 6 core 3.6Ghz with 32 GB RAM, SSD 1TB system drive, 3 3TB regular drives for samples, recordings and misc.  Behringer X Touch, UAD Apollo Quad.  2 UAD2 Quads PCI (i think - inside the box whatever that is), Console 1.  More guitars (40??) and synths (hard and soft) than talent.  Zendrum!!!

    Hey Space,

It's all done and almost here. Amazon has the publication date as March 16th, so it should be out right around then...

Yep, there will definitely be a Kindle version. The publisher fixed the problem with the last edition so this time there shouldn't be any problems.

Now I'm working on some DVD tutorials... I'll keep you informed.

    Thanks!

    Hey Scott,

I purchased your Sonar 7 Power Book, and still refer to it.

    Cheers.

    <edit>

What will be the main content difference between the book and your videos?

I do not see the Chapter Outline for the new book yet on Amazon.

Would you be able  to post the table of contents, before the pre-order deal expires?

I see the Table of Contents are listed here on the last book.

Scott, your SONAR books are always wonderful, of course, but I have a question in this unique case:

How will you handle the many changes expected from X1B, when that major update is due out around the same time as your book?

Software: Cakewalk by Bandlab; Adobe Audition; Band-in-A-Box audiophile; Izotope Ozone; Encore; Melodyne; Win 10 Pro, 64-bit.

Hardware: Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 2nd; Roland Integra-7; TCE Finalizer; Presonus Central Station, Behringer X-Touch.  Home built i7 with 16 GB RAM, SSDs.

    Hey GP,

Since the X1 interface and workflow is so different, most of the chapters in the book have new content. Plus, new features are included as well, and that includes the new features that were added in 8.5. So there's definitely plenty of new content in the book. But the format is similar because it's a guide to the entire application. Here's the table of contents:

    Introduction
    Chapter 1. Presenting SONAR X1
Chapter 2. Customizing SONAR for Your Workflow
Chapter 3. Working with SONAR Project Files
Chapter 4. Navigating Projects and the Workspace
Chapter 5. Recording Music and Sound with SONAR
Chapter 6. Editing and Processing Basics
    Chapter 7. Advanced Editing Features
Chapter 8. Playing with Software Synthesizers
Chapter 9. Composing with Loops and Making Beats
Chapter 10. Arranging the Music Mix
    Chapter 11. Exploring Effects Plug-Ins
Chapter 12. Automation and Control Surfaces
Chapter 13. Exporting and Putting Your Project on CD
Chapter 14. Surround Sound with SONAR
Chapter 15. Standard Music Notation via the Staff View
Chapter 16. Studio Control with Studioware and SysEx
Chapter 17. The Cakewalk Application Language (CAL)
Appendix A. Properly Storing Your Project Files
Appendix B. Audio for Video with SONAR

The DVD tutorials will cover only the new features in X1 and will be more technique oriented. I would recommend people read the book first if they want info on the entire application as well as the new features from 8.5. As a matter of fact, I'll be recommending the book in the intro to the DVD.

    Thanks!
    Scott

    Hey Riojazz,

Cakewalk has been working on X1b for a while now and those changes were anticipated before the book content was finalized. Plus, Cakewalk did the technical edit for the book, so you can be sure the information is accurate.

However, if they make any last minute changes that manage to slip through, then I'll add those to the errata page on my web site, which is the normal procedure when book errors are found. You'll be able to easily print out the page, if necessary.

    Thanks!

Scott, the DVD tutorials will be a separate product from your Sonar Power! book if I'm correct in assuming - unless this will be included in the book's release in March but not included with the Kindle version.

There's a section on AudioSnap in Chapter 7 covering the basics and some things you can do with it.

    Thanks!

    Hi Fernando,

The manual is more like a reference, but the book is meant to be read from cover to cover like a guide book. There are step-by-step instructions as well as examples and tips on how to best use the features, etc.

    Thanks!

Hi, Scott - I'm a big fan of your "missing manual" style books.  I still have your first book, "Cakewalk Power!" which as I've told you before, still addresses things apropos to Sonar--up until X1.

I feel you're now in an awkward position, having written a new book about software which is clearly problematic in the extreme.  You've said on this thread that you've already included information which covers the up-coming X1b fixes.  I take it this means that you've written info about an Audio Snap version which is actually functioning completely, something all X1 users are (im)patiently waiting for.

But I can't imagine how you've worked around things like the awful global snap palette which we've been told won't be corrected, since the designers somehow consider that an improvement -when all of us using Sonar know it's a catastrophe.

Maybe there's more to the X1b fixes than we even are aware of, but I'm just saying that I'm boggled by the position you must be in, having to write a How To book for something which most people admit is a huge step backwards for Cakewalk software.

Well, I've written this in a way that you can't possibly respond, and remain diplomatically in line with the company, but I just had to write something which is meant to say - I really feel for you.

    Hey Randy,

It's always good to hear from you! Actually, I really like X1 and the new workflow and I'm not just saying that. I use it everyday. The global snap really isn't a problem once you get used to it. Just set up key bindings for each of the snap settings and changing the resolution is a quick keypress away. Granted, you really have to want to change the way you work and I know some people don't want to do that. But at least for me, the workflow is much faster, especially with the new Smart tool.

Now that's not to say I don't want to see improvements. I definitely do, especially in the area of customization. I hope that Cakewalk will bring back the ability to edit the menus, colors, customize the tools, and even let us create our own toolbars (or at least customize and break apart the Control Bar). Oh, and being able to keybind every single function would be something I'd like to see as well. To me, being able to customize the software to work for you is one of the most important things.

Anyway, I think the book turned out really well, and everyone using SONAR X1 will benefit from the information that it provides.

    Thanks!
    Scott

Randy your post is a bit myopic IMO and may represent your point of view, but not the the point of view of most X1 users.

"...clearly problematic in the extreme." For you perhaps. Not for a lot of other users. Bugs? Yes. Deal breakers? For you? Maybe. For others? Maybe not.

"...when all of us using Sonar know it's a catastrophe." Simply not true. It may be a catastrophe for you - for many other users, it's a big leap forward and very easy to use.

"...something which most people admit is a huge step backwards for Cakewalk software." Again, may be true for you, but for most people? How could/would you know that most people admit this? Can't be from reading the forum because that represents only a very small if not miniscule portion of the entire world wide user base.

You also know that many users are quite happy with X1 but you don't mention that nor do you assume that Scott may be one of those users.

You know I appreciate all of your participation on this forum but looking through only one's own eyes can distort the bigger picture.

I try and see both sides. Some people dislike X1 and always will. Some people like it. The picture's too large and complex IMO to declare that most users see it as a catastrophe, as you do, or most users like it very much, as I do. Neither point of view can be accurate.

    Humbly Yours

    Hello Scott,

Feeling the enthusiasm here but can you tell me what I would find in your book that is not in the downloaded PDF manual?
    Thanks.

Yes, you're right. The book has paper which the PDF lacks.

My Sonar 7 Power book is well used, highlighted, written in. etc.
Much rather read a book than a laptop screen outside on a sunny day.
Examples are different than the PDF, and its a good read.
Printing out 1800 pages of the PDF.....(not for me)
I supporting someone that takes the effort to write a book tailored to the software I use.

FWIW, I will snag a copy of X1 Power.

    Hey Randy,

It's always good to hear from you! Actually, I really like X1 and the new workflow and I'm not just saying that. I use it everyday...

Hi, Scott - Thanks much for the up-beat reply.  I look forward to getting your new book.  I have no doubt it will be very elucidating.  Keep up the great work!

HumbleNoise - I never speak for anyone but myself.  My eyes are the only ones I have!  And what I see in X1 is software that isn't up to snuff yet.  Any of us visiting the Forums can see that it's not unusual for people to have problems with X1, but I still can't speak for any of them really, I can only speak for myself - and that's all anyone can do.  Anyone claiming to speak for anyone but himself isn't being realistic.  All posts, by me, by you, by anyone, should always be read as if having "IMHO" (in my humble/honest opinion) in the text, even when that hasn't been typed.

I look forward to when I can get X1 to work for me.  If X1 and I never click - well, then I'll just keep sticking with 8.5.

Sorry Randy, I was simply reading your words, such as 'all of us' and 'most people.' If by using those words you meant it was just your opinion, then by all means accept my apology for reading them incorrectly.

Hey there, HN - No apologies are needed.  As I said in my last post, I can't stress too much that I never say anything beyond my opinion - and that's all anyone can do, even if they don't understand that's all they can do.  Always - always - we state our opinions, and only our opinions--but we don't need to minimize their importance by saying "Just" our opinions.  They're all we have, and they can change, sometimes on a daily basis!

And since I've been a Cakewalk customer for so long, I do hope that my opinion of X1 can become a positive one.  IMHO, that will just require a ton of major changes, and I can see from the Forum, that I'm far from alone in that.  IMHO there's something fundamentally wrong when a huge PDF file, and that long series of Groove 3 vids still aren't enough to make the program work for a lot of folks.  IMHO those tools aren't enough, because the program those tools are trying to explain is flawed.  Meanwhile, previous versions of Sonar had a simple, intuitive logic to them that IMHO make them far superior.  It shouldn't take massive, endless study to unravel the mysterious workings of a program.

I await the version of X1 which IMHO will be acceptable!

    All IMHO IMHO IMHO.

... I hope that Cakewalk will bring back the ability to edit the menus, colors, customize the tools, and even let us create our own toolbars (or at least customize and break apart the Control Bar).

Something just occurred to me when reading this. Since I don't have X1 yet, I can't comment directly, but I gather that the Control Bar is a bit of an issue for some people, especially those who, like me, don't have the latest greatest highest-resolution screen, and so have to live with a rather limited subset of the all-in-one-place control the CB is designed to provide.

What if there were two (or more) iterations of the Control Bar that you could switch between with a keypress, depending on what you were doing at the time - say, a mixing CB, a Midi editing CB and a compositing CB? (Or, whatever sets of tasks you want to group together for whatever purpose...) Kind of like the MultiDock but specifically for the Control Bar?

I somehow feel like FastBikerBoy will shortly appear to inform me that this can already easily be achieved with Screensets... which may be true, but... maybe if it were possible to do this without changing anything else? useful?

apologies in advance if this makes no sense at all in light of actually using the program...
