Hi. How are you? Someone said that Pink Floyd don't rock, what do you think?
It was a few years ago... a dad asked (not my dad). Dad... Where have you been? Son... Rocking out to Pink Floyd Dad... Pink Floyd don't ROCK! I remember thinking that way when I was 18-21 years old or so. I was into bands that were Guitar, Bass, and Drums. I accepted akeys in some bands but would tell you that there are no Horns in RnR... of course I was really wrong but I was a young "know it all". Anyway... My grand daughter asked about this. She is 10 and heard a story about the Q&A above. My wife told me about it and asked if I had any Floyd to put on... I was grilling and got distracted and forgot at the time but I keep thinking about it. I only have Dark Side Of The Moon (my fav) on CD... the lyrics to Time bring tears to my eyes because of their depth into the human experience. I've always LOVED the Relics album and am thinking about buying a Floyd box set... but I digress. I have Atom Heart Mother and Ummagumma... and another one on LP but I hardly ever play my LPs anymore. So... Does Pink Floyd ROCK? (and... more importantly, how are you?) I am FINE (old and in the way). Julien

Just listen to "The Nile Song"

The did rock at times - The Nile Song, One of these Days, the solo section in Money, and many others - but I don't think it's the main thing we remember them for. I love Atom Heart Mother, Meddle, TDSOTM. In fact, pretty much everything prior to The Wall - which I love, but not as a Pink Floyd album (even if it's the first PF album I've heard). And then the post-Waters era stuff as well - There's some very nice songwriting and some great songs on Momentary Lapse of Reason and Division Bell. I'm also a huge Syd Barret fan, so the first singles and that first album are some of my favorites. So I guess you could say I love them all, for one reason or another, from Arnold Layne to Division Bell. The only album I don't own is The Final Cut. I don't think I've ever listened to it, though I've heard a few songs.

They sure rocked my world...but I grew up with them. I can't imagine a guitarist not banging his head on the wall trying to learn "Comfortably Numb". If that doesn't register then maybe the guitarist should take up flute of sumpin.

Nope. PF doesn't rock and David Gilmour isn't that great of a guitarist because he can't play really fast. Right. *Pfft...* Kids. Hmm... I think I know what I'm going to listen to tonight.

The live versions of Run Like Hell from the last two tours are pretty well up there, though once you've heard them the album version is a bit tame. I was in the audience at Wembley and at Earl's Court for both.

Hi, "... don't rock...?" That person needs a new set of ears and you might as well tell he/she to go listen to Incense and Peppermint and Paul Revere and the Raiders! Who needs to hear to people that don't even know the meaning of the word? I don't. Parents included ... AND, btw ... I never got their respect until the day I nailed them for their supposed intellectual smugness! I nailed him with Tomita and her with her opinions on the wives and husbands of her children! It was more BS, than it was an intelligent discussion or view, in the first place! My mom is, still, a very disrespectful person, though she does it behind everyone's back now ... and still calls it intelectual! But it's not as bad as one of my sisters making a comment about me posting in a board like this where people are not educated and intelligent enough to discuss things. It's downright insulting and irresponsible ... and even I would be embarassed to think that of anyone on the face of this earth except ... well ... the guy from IK, and another liar or two!

Well, thanks! I am a LONG time Floyd fan and have always thought they rocked. Gilmour is just incredible to me though I am a bit more of a Townshend or Kossoff sort of guitarist... I think Gilmour is plays the best, most feeling solo guitar ever. It reminds me of back in the day when Mark Farner got little respect as a guitarist (at least in some circles) but he played for the song and like it or not Grand Funk was bigtime for a while. I guess there are always music snobs and snobs of all sorts... I have really tried to grow out of it once I saw I was doing it. Now, if I listen to FM, I listen to Album88 in Atlanta, the GA State University station. They except for programs with a specific format, play "new music". Now I am going outside to plant some okra, squash, and spices. I hope to finish today. I grow mostly in Earthboxes. Thanks again! (PS: Moshakie... I too have a family. My family put the funk in disfunctional.. no doubt. ) J

jbow Well, thanks! Now I am going outside to plant some okra, squash, and ****es. I hope to finish today. I grow mostly in Earthboxes. Thanks again! (PS: Moshakie... I too have a family. My family put the funk in disfunctional.. no doubt. ) J There are some guitarists, that do VERY DIFFERENT things, and comparing them is really silly and off the wall. They "rock" ... and make many of the popular guys look not only bad, but downright silly and poor musicians. With that said, there was a time when not knowing notes and chords was also a good thing, and some of them came out of that ... and got better. Some examples, and more than likely have not heard many of these foreigners: Ax Gernreich - Early Guru Guru (what Jimi probably would have done in his non-existant future!) Michael Karoli - Late guitarist from CAN. Start with "Mother Sky", and then listen to "Bel Air", and then the 2 long cuts back to back in "Soon Over Babbalooma" John Weinzierl - Amon Duul 2 - I call him the pupil from the John Gurley guitar method that went on to teach Dave Gilmour! But Gurley would be first, too! Check out the long title cut "Yeti" and then the insane quality of the use of effects in "Wolf City" and "Vive La Trance". Terje Rypdal - Check out his early album, "Odyssey" and then his unreal "Eos" with David Darling (wish Bapu could play like that!), and then his later stuff with another guitarist with a rock band. He was the original, and Jeff Beck has copied more than once in his lifetime! David Allen - Carmen. Classically trained guitarist, doing Spanish guitar licks on an electric guitar. "Fandangos in Space without Bapu" and "The Gypsies with Bapu". Bass player from this band was stolen by Ian Anderson for Jethro Tull until passed away with cancer! Egberto Gismonti - used to build his own guitars. "Folk Songs" "Magico" with Charlie Haden and Jan Garbarek, and then his solo stuff prior to this ... excellent! Gayle Ebbett - Djam Karet. Becoming one of the best bands in American Progressive Music. And Gayle rocks! Robert Fripp -- Richard Pinhas ... They all rock ... differently! There are many more ... late guitar player with Funkadelic (Maggot Brain), Stevie Ray Vaughn, Garry Moore ... all of them are magnificent rock'rs in their own right ... So play for them "Roll Over Beethoven" and then "Rock Me Amadeus" and tell them that they don't know what a rock is! Anyone saying that, has never heard music ... they only heard one song! Tell them to go back to the crib and ask them if they need diapers!

I was in the audience at Wembley and at Earl's Court for both. And Earls court for Dark Side Tour first and second time round that rocked my tiny little furry mind. The Delicate Sound of Thunder tour at Wembley and the London Arena, that rocked me physically the sub bass on Dogs of War, cloth flapping. It depends on what you call Rock? do we need to categorise or can we not just enjoy what pleases our ears.

Sounds like there were a few of us at that gig in Wembley Stadium (1987 or thereabouts I think?). I got a bit freaked out by the net of lasers bouncing up an down (ok I wasn't entirely sober at the time if I'm honest) and had to sit down for a while. For the last tour at Earl's Court I'd dispensed with the youthful experimentation and only had a couple of beers. Didn't have quite the same vibe as a result...

hi wood, i`ve never been to wembly (my loss). saw them at the then state of the art Sydney Ent.Centre with around 8,000 people so you can imagine how intimate and Loud it was. sadly,it`s being demolished as we speak to make way for a bigger and "better" venue. better my arse-for whom-certainly not the fans, definately the promoters. i haven`t been to a stadium gig for years-any band that tours here invariably plays local warmups and after show jams so if you keep your ears open and your phone handy you can usually ferret them out. ps:"One of these Days" ,on my first real stereo rocked my world, though it sounds a bit thin and dated now. cheers

Not sure if I would say they sound like PF, but they do remind me of others from that era (I've got a couple of their albums). So did you hear about them thanks to Elephant being on a commercial? Heh, that's how I learned about Royskopp... Meant to add that I really like Innerspeaker far more than their newest offering Lonerism.
