Hi, total amateur

Hi
I purchased Cakewalk Home Studio XL a few months ago and have got a keyboard linked up to my laptop via a USB cable.

I have been getting on OK with it but i am limited to the standard number of MIDI sounds and wanted to know how to get more?!

I was also looking at the manual and there is something called DX instruments which I am assuming allows you to control the instrument sounds from the laptop/computer? Is this right or am i getting confused? I have tried using them but no sound comes out of the keyboard or laptop.

Iam not also not sure whether sound should be coming out of the laptop or keyboard - at the moment it always comes out of the keyboard.

Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks

Tne DX instruments are software instruments that can be played and controlled by your external keyboard. However, your laptop has to have either an integated soundcard or an audio interface in its PCMIA slot to route audio to an external amp and speakers. The manual has tutorials that clearly state how to acheive this goal.

Thanks - the laptop does have sound (or is a sound card different?).

It says something about Sigma Tel Audio? Do I have to change my audio options within Cakewalk do you think? Will this automatically convert the MIDI to audio or is there a process for that?

    Thanks again!
