Hidden MIDI data?

When I export a MIDI file out of Sibelius (5) and import it into Sonar, each midi track resets it's synth when playback is stopped. Example: I have a Piano midi track, I route it to Kontakt 4, load up a piano and hit play. The piano is too loud, so I lower the output of the piano from within Kontakt. When playback is stopped, all changes that were made to the instrument have been reset to their original settings.

I've opened up the Event List and deleted any 'erroneous looking' commands, but nothing seems to fix the problem. Weird thing is, if I copy the events from the offending track and paste them to a new MIDI track, all is well. It would be nice not to have to do this for each track though, and I've a feeling it's a very simple fix!

Thanks in advance

I'll have three fingers of Glenlivet, with a little bit of pepper... and some cheese.

Sounds like there's a CC7 (main volume) event in there somewhere, which the clip keeps reverting to.  This happened to me a long time ago.  If you want to get a clean slate to start out with, as far as clip volume is concerned, you can select the MIDI clip, then go to Edit > Select > By Filter, then uncheck everything except "Control" (click the 'None' button at bottom right in the Event Filter dialog, then check only 'Control'), then make Control's range read "min: 7" and "max: 7" (which will select volume events only), then click OK.  At that point, you can press 'Delete', and all volume events should then be gone.

(In addition, like Rbh said, it seems like I also had to go to Options > Project > MIDI Out tab, and uncheck "Patch/Controller Searchback Before Play Starts".  Not sure though.)

You can then insert your own CC7 at the very beginning of the clip, to make sure it knows you're the boss.

It's because Sonar is controlling the mixer in Kontakt.  Look at the MIDI volume slider for the track associated with the Kontakt track, right click, and down at the bottom, choose to Disable Control.  That slider in Sonar is controlling the mixer in Kontakt.  But perhaps the easier option is to ignore the controls in Kontakt, and give that control over to Sonar.

I also notice you mentioned "importing" the MIDI.
If you "open" the MIDI file all the original data will be in place. Importing seems to result in misbehavior.

The problem was not fixed with the 'reset controllers' option, but by following huffy's instructions in post #3 and/or Randy's idea of disabling various parameters in the MIDI track (volume, pan etc.)

JohnnyV, I had to import the file because the MIDI had to follow a pre-existing tempo map. However, I've had the same problem when using 'Open With' in the past.

Here's the dumb question of the day, but how do you route the output of Cakewalk to Kontakt. I just loaded them both on my PC, and for the life of me, I can't figure it out!

    Thanks,

DjWilly - You need to have the VST .dll for Kontakt in your Cakewalk VST folder, along with all plug-ins and synths/samplers you want to use.  Then you run the plug-in manager scan so Sonar can find your VSTs.  Then they're available to insert in projects.  That VST .dll for Kontakt should have been automatically placed in your VST folder during installation.

As a VST. Time to start reading the manual and doing the tutorials.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.
