Hidden vs Unlisted CD Track
Any opinions on having a bonus track as a "hidden" track separated by 5-7 minutes of silence from the end of the last song within the same cd track, or putting it on its own cd track but not listing it in the track list on the cd cover (for downloads give it a track name like -.- ).

That can create some buzz about the CD and increase sales but it's already been done and much like CDs the novelty has worn off. If you were the fist to do it and the song was way fun like Joe's Blues / Seattle Grunge Rock Blues it might help a little but I think it's just too late for that now. Folks don't really use CDs much anymore and a hidden track will only cause the rip in to iTunes to be wrong. At this point in history I just don't see it being worth anything more then a laugh. As for an unlisted track that might be OK and might even be advised if you have a song that doesn't really fit the mood of the CD but you want fans to have a copy if they buy the CD. They may also talk about the CD more to other music lovers if the song turns out to be one they love.

The novelty wore off. 5 or 7 minutes of silence will have me reaching for another album. Only a great (and popular) musician is going to be able to get away with surprises that regular joes will be surprised with or miss completely.

I wouldn't put 5 minutes of silence before a hidden track.... that's just duuuuumb. 99% of the people will pop it out before they ever get to the "hidden song". if you want to put a "bonus" track on the CD... that's fine.... just do it. If you advertise it on the jacket or disk... is it really a bonus track? But I see it done from time to time... mostly on DVD's as bonus features.... one more song is always cool on a CD.

A few years ago, I produced a CD for a band called Lonestar Pornstar. One of the tracks that we recorded was also a track we had done on their original demo, which had come out a year to two prior. Rather than including that new version on the CD, as a listed song, they opted to bury it at the end of their CD as a bonus track. What we did to help folks realize there was SOMETHING THERE....was we put the bonus track as #69 (Get it....pornstars?...hehe...) and made tracks 24 through 68 play through as 4-second songs (silence). So...if the listener was playing the disc and they got to the "end", they'd hopefully notice that their song count was still clicking away.... And if they didn't notice the first time, hopefully they'd notice on a future listen. Whether they did or didn't, didn't matter too much to the band, since the song was already out there and this was simply an updated - better recorded version - of it. The one thing we hadn't counted on was this: http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/protection/id205685557 On iTunes, every single one of those 4 second clips of silence....showed up as a $.99 download labeled as "BONUS" - which hopefully they didn't sell any of. Of course, to purchase the entire CD from iTunes was still only $9.99.

The track count thing is cute, you can also leave a gap between the end ID of one song and the start ID of the next and that will make the counter on some CD players do a countdown starting with a negative number. I think I remember that from a Tom Petty CD. Kinda sad.. I can't remember the last time I played a CD... my car and home stereo have MP3 playback now, hell even my clock radio will take a USB flash drive full of them.
