High School Year Book
A friend of mine sent me some photos from my 71' yearbook. Very cool! He also sent me a picture of my high school sweetheart that I went with for 2 years. Wow! She was gorgeous

I wish I still had my yearbook. The last I saw it was at my X wife's house 5 years ago. I should have taken it with me. She didn't even go the my high school. Someone told me you can buy yearbooks but they cost way too much to get one. Everyone looks like little kids in the pictures. There wasn't one of me from it.

Myself, and almost every other guitar player in Long Beach at the time (1970), graduated from Will J Reid Continuation High (49 graduates that year). There is/was no Yearbook. Started my HS education at Lakewood High, the "Lancers". The only thing of note our "contemporaries" accomplished was breeding up a bunch of predators. The "Lakewood Posse" IIRC. Wasn't at all supersized when the scandal broke! A buddy of mine has all the Jr High and HS yearbooks. One of his passive/aggressive behaviors is pulling them sum beeches out and making you take a journey down "memory lane". For some, high school was the "time of their life". I'd feel sorry for them, if the "time of their life" wasn't the also the lowest point for those that had the misfortune of also being there. Save your money. I couldn't wait to "get out of Dodge". T

I got something even better in the mail: a tape of my first band playing at a high school dance in 1968. My best friend in H.S. was the bass player in that band, and he'd saved a quarter-inch R-R tape all these years. Best part of hearing it was it didn't suck nearly as bad as I'd imagined it would. Worst part was realizing that I'll never hit those high notes ever again.

That's a cool gift! I'd love to hear our "talent show" entry of Styx's Suite Madam Blue that we did my senior year of high school... (We lost to a guy who played Johnny B Good behind his back - *Sigh...*). Such were the times back then!

I wish I had some recordings of my days on the Bossier Strip in 70'. I remember our band playing a lot of Grand Funk, Lepplin, and Hendrix in those days. I can still remember that "hum" coming out of my amp. A Fender Super 6. I bet we sucked but we thought we sounded great

What was the name of the band? My first (and only) band was called The Chevrons. Boy, did we suck. But in a hick town outside of Peoria IL, there wasn't a whole lot in the way of alternative options back in the early 60s. Three chords and you were good to go for an hour's worth of songs. Throw in one more chord and you could even put some slow songs in the list.

My oldest known recordings (studio) copied from a worbly cassette tape. 1974. Mars Hall (yup, that's what we called ourselves). And here I am in that studio recording one of those songs.

Our band was called Bucrys Erie, which our drummer had seen on the side of a crane. Before we realized we'd spelled it wrong it had already been painted on the side of our re-purposed bread truck.

I can't remember too many band names at all... One was "Off The Shelf" and I definitely remember our bass player wanting "Random Precision" (which was wildly commented on as his playing style - LOL), but the most well known was "Foolish Pleasure" (with Craig Goldy of Giuffria and Dio fame, plus Michael Grove who went on to drum for early Mickey Ratt before dying young). Wow... Just found these online! Here are our high school yearbook pictures (Me & Mike Grove from 1982 and Craig Goldy from 1979 - All from Patrick Henry High in San Diego). I hated that my Mom made me cut my hair short for my Senior picture! LOL. I wish I could find ANY pictures of me playing (I only know of one that was ever taken, and it was lost during my move up here - STILL pissed off about that). Obviously sized in order of musical ability - hehe... *Sigh...* Just found this too... Still don't know what happened.

Hmm... The singer was also a Patrick Henry High alumni but a bit older (Craig was two years older than I was). I think his name was Tom. Mike and I were only with the band for six weeks, but oh what fun that time was!

I was expelled in Jr. High for my hair length. My dad despised authority and told me I could take two weeks off and then get my hair cut.

My dad despised hair. He liked to give haircuts that were shorter than your scalp. If he could have gotten away with shaving under my skull, he would have. I grew my hair out when I could, but it was never happy with me. Fortunately for my dad, my hair decided he was right and left me not long after high school. I had to wear a hat when I played with various bands in the '70s & '80s because the other musicians were terrified of my head. I'd show up and jam with them and then I would take off my hat. They looked like I had just clubbed a baby. A few threw up at the sight. I don't look back on high school with a lot of fondness.
