"High Time", an acoustic ballad to the road trip
"High Time" http://soundcloud.com/bats-brew/bb04-high-time from the new album. figured i'd post something a bit more mellow than what i've been posting. this was done using some basic hand percussion, and my Taylor 414, some vocals, and a couple of mics. basic stuff. typically, one mic on the guitar, either a ADK Hamburg, or a AT4033, pointed at the 12th fret... run into a A Designs Audio MP-1 mic preamp, dbx compressor, convertors. 3 guitar tracks. 2 lead vocal tracks, blended, and 2 part harmony. bass direct thru sansamp bass di.

What's not to like? You've given us yet another well arranged and crafted song. Your vocals are very well performed, and your lyrics are top notch. I have a feeling your album is going to give us all goosebumps.

Lynn, thanks so much for checking this one out. i love doing the acoustic stuff... but don't post that much of it. i guess it's my 'zeppelin' influence, but i always loved the acoustic numbers they did, and recording acoustics just seems so honest, in terms of guitar voice... album is up and loaded! see link below...........

I really like this alot! Acoustics sound perfect. Vocals are right on. The percussion is excellent. Sonics are perfect. Song is really good. Love the whole thing. Great job. Solo is smooth. I like your style. I hear some Zep and CSNY. This would be fun to play drums to. Rimshot

drumstixkev thanks a lot kev, appreciate the comments. rimshot thanks man. yep, can't get away from the CSNY and Zep influences, they're ingrained. this song would be easy to translate to full band. you can even slow it down to half speed, and play it in dropped tune, instant heavy. timidi thanks man....... my primary acoustic is a Taylor 414 i use multiple mics, but only one at a time. some of the tracks are with a ADK Hamburg, some are with a AT4033, and maybe a SM57

chuckC thanks for listening in... ohgrant that's hand percussion. a egg shaker, some maracas, and a conga set. i just kinda follow the guitar rhythm, that's why the rhythm isn't spot on. it's supposed to be a bit looser, a little more vibey. clean thanks mark. i appreciate that.... guitarpima hey thanks for listening! i've done some acoustic numbers with slide in the past, so this is kind of a changeup from what 'had' been the norm tap appreciate that! mick taylor, don't hear that name dropped very often, but yes, i'm a fan.

whack! thanks man. glad you dig it. the reverse thing, was a three step process... i took the first line of the lyric ....."one hour to get there".... and took a section of the wave file where it says 'one'..... copied to another track. and i applied a healthy short-but-phat reverb to it. then, i selected that snippet, and applied 'reverse audio' to it. then i slipped it into the time line right before the actual line starts.... and applied a volume envelope to it, and brought it up real quick just in front of the actual word. then i chopped it off just as the peak of the actual word comes in.

yeah, this is bit different than your usual fare..... but it still has the distinctive "Bat" feel to it. I hear the CSN & Zep influences in it. Nice fat sound on the acoustic. excellent

guitarhacker thanks man. you know, i have quite a few like this, just don't post them all.... i run the acoustic mic, thru a nice tube preamp with some grunt on it, then thru a dbx compressor, before hitting the convertors. it takes all the nice tone, chops off the transients, and i eq the low end pretty heavy (roll off most of everything below 150hz)

Another quality track, I like the sound and feel of this track, really well played. My only criticism is I would have liked some Mellotron strings at the end, it would have really given the track a Zep feel and given the listener a lift at the end. Peace Ben

I can't say I ever expected to see the words acoustic ballad in batsbrew song post, so apart from anything else, sheer curiosity made me have to listen. Then I was surprised all over again as it was nothing like I was imagining in my head. You nailed it though, no surprises there I guess. Everything sounds absolutely bang on to me.

alright, you guys are still checking it out! thanks.... i've been working on mixes of songs for an all-instrumental album i'm going to put out in the spring. so this is a good diversion for me, reading responses.... ben mellotron!! hehhe, oh no, this kiss of progressive death! mental images of rick wakeman and john paul jones run thru my tiny little brain..... you know, i actually came across a VST of a 'mellotron' a while back, and i've been dying to try it out on something... thanks for listening! daryl thanks for the kind words, daryl. it'd be cool to hook up and just mess around with mixes and try out new ideas. even tho I don't do a lot of reviews here, i listen a lot.. and read the other responses.... and i've garnered so much information from just listening to others talk about their workflow, ideas of using FX and arrangement ideas... i steal a lot of info that way! wookie thanks for saying it anyways! LOL have another good day paulo paulo, i've been writing (and posting) acoustic ballads for several years here... sorry you missed the previous ones. but in short, i'd say my overall output is about 20% all acoustic, with acoustics making it into the mix of the electrics another 25% of the time. i love acoustic. to me, it's the most revealing, there's no where to hide. THE FUN THING... for me, about acoustics, is the dynamics. i mean, i can plow thru a song with the acoustic, and make it be fairly consistent across the 'dynamics' board...... but being able to back off, and play heavy and light.... then later tweak it with volume automation... that just blows my mind. that's what i did with this one... when i get to the really light stuff, my outboard compressor deals with some of that.. but all the guitar tracks have heavy volume (and panning) automation (so i would not have to rely on internal compression messing with the clarity of the guitar capture), but it's so subtle, you'd have to really study it to 'hear' it working. but it's there. i dig that. thanks for listening, glad you liked this one. i got some more comin'........... mstodge thanks mark. i don't know about genius, but i will say i had fun!

ITSADEQUATE thanks for checking it out. philz glad you liked it, phil. the mics: i used a combination (1 mic per track/performance) of 2 different ones on this song... audio technica 4033, and a ADK Hamburg. i sit about a foot away from the mic, and aim it more towards the neck/body joint.

I just listened to your tune Bat. I have to somewhat diverge from the other comments and say that I actually hear a Jane's Addiction influence more than Zep. I think it's the vocal style or production of the vocals. Either way, I enjoyed it!
