High screen resolution comparison question
I am trying to decide between a 27" or maybe even a 30" monitor for my new setup. I was wondering if anyone with a higher screen resolution (2560 x 1440) could then compare the same monitor to1920 x 1080 and post pics. Essentially, I am trying to decide if a lower resolution $300 27" will do, or a higher resolution 27" at $800 is worth it. Bonus if we can get a shot of the higher 30" resolution at 2560 x 1600 for comparison too! Thanks!

I've had to replace a 20" LCD widescreen recently, which took me by surprise as I wasn't quite ready to commit myself yet to a dual screen configuration. I've just begun researching the possibilities but have come to the conclusion that bigger screens, from 32" to 42" for example was a waste of time (mind you, a 42" for viewing videos would be sweet). And the main reason for this was the "response time" or more precisely..., the lack of. I've come to a compromise in the meantime and settled on a 27" LCD with a 3ms response time (GTG) for the ridiculous price of $235.00 CDN. I've had it since this Tuesday and I'm literally kicking myself for not having done this sooner. The "real estate" I now have at my disposal has made quite a difference with my slowly deteriorating eye sight. I can actually see all features of some of my plugins without having to get close to the screen to decipher some numerical values. I'll be following this thread with interest. Good luck with your search! jc Addition: See if a retailer in your area would allow you to test this for yourself on their showroom hardware. A picture may be worth a thousand words, but doesn't come close to the real thing in real time.

Thanks for your input Alegria. A 30"+ screen is tempting....but I have read similar comments about lack of response time on those. I was hoping to see a screenshot of SONAR running on the two resolutions so I could compare them. Unfortunately, I have no way to run SONAR away from my studio....otherwsie that is a great idea to just go to the local retailer and check it out. Thanks again!

Alegria, I am interested in why response time would be important, resolution I understand. Thanks

The lesser the response time, the betterer the fluidity/blur-free motion will be. The holy grail for gamers.

I think you can probably just figure that a collapsed track in TV is 25px high, so if you went from 1080 to 1600 you should technically be able to view 20 more collapsed tracks. And PC modules generally seem to be about 200px to 250px high, so you could could fit a couple more of those in the viewing area. If you can't get screenshots of the two resolutions side by side, you could at least measure other areas of Sonar to get an idea of how much more you can fit on the screen.

I'm running my 27's at 1920x1080, I don't have the option to go to 2560x1440. The tracks are plenty small when collapsed, so I don't think I'd be interested in going any higher. Of course I have 3 to spread Sonar across, if I didn't have that option... T

Maybe not.

You may also want to look at pixels per inch to determine physically how high or wide a track or other item will appear. A monitor with a higher PPI will display objects smaller than a monitor with a lower PPI. Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_displays_by_pixel_density to see how various monitor sizes and resolutions compare.

I'm running two 28" monitors and love it....both running at 1920x1080. I have the docking window floated over to the second monitor. I like having the PRV and CV full screen on a separate monitor.

I saw Nuendo on this 27" monitor and I'm pretty sure Sonar would be great on that too, especially since Sonar has a better layout for a single monitor display. The details were excellent and the amount of tracks it would display was unbelieveable! It's quite affordable too. At least over here.
