Like it. It’s got a weird, raw energy about it - both the playing and singing. It almost sounds like a live band. Nice little hook and clever lyrics. There a small drummer madness thing at 3:12 or so - part of what makes this sound live. Fun song. Vocals strain in parts and that gives a Ray Davies feel (way before your time I’m sure). Good job!

Something sounds way out of tune, possibly the bass.  I recognize that issue instantly, because I've done it so many times.

Voda La Void - Thanks for telling me about the out of tune bass - I fixed it and it sounds a lot better.  Thanks again.

This song has a nice Classic Rock Type of Vibe going for it .
It drew me in as it unfolded .
I don't sing ..I wish I could ...in a few sections I would get Raw and raspy ..but like I said I don't sing

very nice

Douglas,
The chorus is quite catchy and it's still  in my head some 30 min after listening. Nice.
Excellent vocal too. I really got into this song.

Yeah, Ray Davies like vocal.

For my taste the drums are a little lost.

Doug,

Cool track, you do sound a lot like Tom Petty in this vocal performance.    The drums are buried but otherwise sounds good.

Was that a baritone guitar doing the main riff? Interesting choice. I dig it. Your voice sounds fine, but I would try holding the words longer to get more of a legato feel. You have a good voice. I'd like to see you push it more. Try singing along with Steve Perry on "Open Arms" and hold the notes as long as he does. I'm not a big Journey fan, but Perry's got that legato thing down. He makes all the words flow into each other in a way that most of us could never do, but I think you could if you worked at it.

This has all the elements of an early, classic rock song.  Your voice is even different, sounding like the yardbirds or kinls or something. :D  Needs a classic les paul solo.  The one you have is more in service of the song, rather than something really special.  I think it'd be worth the effort.  Good one.

markno999 - Thanks for listening and for your critiques.
daryl1968 - Thanks for giving my song a listen, and I"ll work on the drums in the mix.
Wayfarer - Thanks - I'll give Open Arms a try - Steve Perry's voice is a tough one to match

Yeah I thought the guitars were out of tune, not the bass, and just in the first 30 seconds. The rest of the song seems tuned, or else I got used to it?

However, great voice, great song, great Ray Davies comparisons, to which I would add Sean Kelly of the Samples, one of my favorites.

Mix-wise everything comes in just a bit hot - are you doing mix bus smashing? Backing off just a tad maybe? And the vocal reverb is a lot lighter than the drums reverb, which is cavernous at times.

Absolutely love that last held guitar note. Fantastic tone.

another winner I'd say. Lemme know where to buy your album when it comes out.

I agree with some of the comments above -- vocals (which are good!!!) have a Petty/Davies sound to them.  You have a good song going here.  The melody has a great hook to it and the the lyrics are also good.  I really like that guitar riff that comes in about 1:37.

Nice one.

Re: Higher Than The Sun 2018/10/28 17:40:16 (permalink)
emeraldsoul -  I usually mix the multitracks down to a stereo track, and then I applied the LP EQ, LP MB, and the Adaptive Limiter to the master mix bus. I added a bit of air for the LP EQ and chose Pop Master for the LP MB - I dialed back a bit on both. I went back and turned up the drums a bit, and backed off on the reverb.  I added a bit of reverb to the lead vocal - so I hope it's more balanced now.

Like the energy and feel of this one.

Drums need to be louder in the verses + bridges for me.

Nice song - thanks for sharing.

Good Job!

I usually don't review the same artist on the same day, but I really was taken by this song.  It sounds like everything is in tune and grooves together nicely on this one.  Catchy melody too.  Had my foot tapping.

Great classic rock feel with this one....  if you'd have said it was a remake of a late 60's song I would have believed you.
