History of Cakewalk/ProAudio/Sonar
My Google skills seem to be lacking. I can't find a listing of the version history of Cakewalk from the frist version for DOS to the latest version Sonar 8. Anyone have such a list? It would be nice to have the month & year of release, which OS it worked with, and CPU/RAM requirements. Thanks!

There actually was a site a while back with exactly that info, but I couldn't find it when I was looking recently; maybe it died a natural internet death.

ORIGINAL: bitflipper Try this one. Thanks for making me feel old. I went from Cakewalk Professional 3 for Windows, to Sonar Producer 3, to Sonar Producer 5, to Sonar Producer 8. This was all after I tried the Voyetra Technologies midi sequencer back in the mid 80s. Another thought is that the product name of Sonar started at what would have been Cakewalk 10. Does that mean when Sonar gets to 10 the name will change again? Just a thought. sd

That'll tell you exactly what version they're up to. Looks like they didn't start counting until the Windows versions started appearing.

FB01?? Sorry, but I liked that little dude. It had some drawbacks in it's program changes implementation, but had some quite cute little "colorization" sounds that I H**LA used in the late 80's.

Earliest version for me was Cakewalk 2 (midi only) that came bundled with a midi interface I purchased (CMS?). I upgraded numerous times, but haven't gotten every version. This year will go from Sonar 6 to Sonar 8, now that the dust has settled on some big studio projects. (Yes, I'm old, dammit!)

Bingo! Same bundle I bought late in '88 or early '89. MPU-401 MIDI interface with Cakewalk 2.0a for DOS. Still have the floppy and the metallic red on gray user manual here somewhere. Maybe 25 pages. CMS = Computer Music Systems IIRC. P.S. I recall that Cakewalk/Greg Hendershott subsequently had a falling out with CMS over licensing/payments, and I had to whine a little to get my copy of 2.0 registered so I could get the upgrade price for 3.0.

It used to be a Cakewalk user/fan page sort of thing, the work of a fellow Cakewalk user named Hans Van Even if I remember correctly. Haven't heard of him in ages. I guess he let go of the domain name.

Hi there:) I started with Shareware Version 0.9x, can't remember! After 2.0, you had to send back the Version before, so I don't have that old stuff any more, just the Boxed Cakewalk For DOS 5.0, originally packed, I have not opened it, cause i then bought Cakewalk for Windows 1.0! What was then? Pro Audio, Sonar, Sonar X, I think more than 19 Versions!!! Bassman. P.S. My first Sequenzer was on Commodore 64, perhaps Steinberg Software. 30 years ago!

I thought the earliest Cakewalk was MIDI-only that you could sync to tape and ran on Commodore 64. I know I used to have that and do that, but not real sure if the software was Cake. I remember not being happy that I had to sacrifice a track on the 8-track (wow!) Tascam for sync. And very much not happy rocking the spools back and forth to find that one bad note, cutting the tape and splicing out the bad spot with leader on both sides, run that through on erase, splice the tape back together and hope there wasn't a blip when it flew by the heads. Oh, oh, and breaking out the alignment tape and the oscilloscope. Those were the days! THE WORLD MAY BE GOING TO HELL, BUT AUDIO RECORDING HAS IMMEASURABLY IMPROVED. Be thankful. Folks who complain that Sonar crashes occasionally have NO IDEA .....

I don't think there was ever a C64 version of Cakewalk. AFAIK Cakewalk was an MS-DOS application from Day 1. But it could be synced to tape. (Something I never did because the po' folk on my side of the tracks could not afford 8-track machines like you rich people up on the hill. For me it was a TEAC 3340S plus a Pioneer 2-track for bounces and final mixdown.) Maybe you're thinking of Steinberg's Pro 16 sequencer, which did run on a C64.
