"Hold Your Fire" - Bluesy sort of Jazz tune (New Lead)

Here's my latest "Hold your Fire". This started as a keyboard riff.  I appreciate all of your thoughts.

Like the song, not the siren.  Maybe if you just used it at the begining only to set the stage.  The rest has a nice feel to it.

Having listened to a few songs today with the drums in your face, I felt like I'd like to hear your drums louder.  Pretty cool vibe going on here.

Bret, Thanks for the listen and the input. I tamed the Siren so it's only in the beginning and a reprise at the end. Yeah, it's much better this way!

    - Sorry the drums weren't in your face, I gave them a bit more punch now.

Nice rhythym beat there!  However, the solo instruments are a bit soft, is that intentional?  Sometimes it is ok.  There is not a rule that they need to dominate if the rhythym is what you want to get across.  Around 1:29 there seems a sour note on the guitar.  Nice relaxing track.

Breezy little tune.  Get's the kinks out for sure.
Nice playing.  I think the hi hat needs a little more hi end and maybe a tiny bit more bass but i'm not sure about how you mix cool jazz.

That electric guitar needs to come UP, it's buried in the mix. There are a few notes being played that are not in the scale. The hat feels panned a bit too hard left, the drums and that rhythm piano are dominating the mix, and the hat is dominating the drums. Sorry to be critical, and please remember, anything I say may be, and probably is WRONG! :-)

This mix extremely out of balance by any definition.  What are you using as a monitoring system? Headphones?  Something's not quite right.

    ( *** Another Remix has been posted! *** )

Thanks Vicente for the listen, I brought up the guitars. I was prep'ing it for vocals, but ....
Rick, I think I added a little more punch on the bass and drums, Thanks for the ears.
Rik, yeah I put the guitar up front now!
Robbie, thanks for your inputs, I started the mix over quite a bit, hopefully this is better.
Jsaras I really appreciate your inputs as well. I think the problem was too much going into a stereo field widner, which was accidentally on in the master. I use this to hear the levels of instruments to blend them in, but rarely master with it.

Enjoyable listen for me.  Personally (caveat- could just be a taste thing here), I would have liked to have heard a bit more of the guitar, and would have preferred a tone more in the Gibson L5 or ES area, but it was still a good tune.  Cool piano vibe.

Vicente thanks for the input on what appears to be a sour note. I originally intended to add some dissonance in there but I guess it was a bit too much. I added a fix to lower it's impact.

Robbie There are more cases of intentional dissonance towards the end which are much more subtle, in these cases coming from different instruments. Yeah I took some artistic liberties here, primarily for the purpose of creating the effect of stressful uneasiness. Like being stared down by Clint Eastwood with a loaded 44 ("I know what your thinking, he fired six shots?")

Scotty as always thanks for the listen and comments.

Phil my original plan was to add vocals so I dummied down the bite of the guitar. It was actually intended to be kind of like an early Santana or Peter Green style, thus I really wanted a mellower sounding instrument, but I decided to put the lead guitar out front. I recorded it with a tube preamp but it was much more subtle and lacked the bite needed to put it out front. I tried a couple of my more favorite amp sims but they didn't sound right, so I decided to use the Studio Devil British Valve. I couldn't get the exact sound I was looking for but I was able to get the bite I needed. Next time I'll boost up my A/DA MP1 settings.

Well I think this is a much better mix, I would EQ that lead guitar with a little mellower tone in the higher registers. And the kick is punching me in the head a bit too hard for my tastes, but it may be perfect for others. The snare seems to have more definition compared to the kick now.

Thanks, Robbie.... If I get a chance I'll address the Kick, and may also laydown a much sweeter lead guitar line. Really busy at work, though.

GREAT tune the keyboard effect kind of gives it a STEELY DAN vibe. My only nit about the mix are the drums sound a bit to much in front of all the other instruments. All in all this is really a GREAT tune/performance. KUDOS!

James..Excellent bass on this! What bass instrument/DI/etc. are you using?? Nice tone on it.

I think the lead guitar can come up a bit IMO.....that's always a good comment to hear 'eh??

Good SD type song and I was glad to her you mention the Peter Green influence!!

Thanks for the listen, Larry.  The Bass was a great find for me many years ago when my sister moved out with her bass. I needed a bass and searched far and wide for one when I lived in Florida. I happened to come across a really nice Peavy Foundation Bass. I had no intention of getting a Peavy, but after about 2 months of further searching I came back to it. I tried a couple of other ones which were the same model but weren't anywhere near the same. I finally bought it and have been happy with the sound I can get out of it. It's perfect for recording.  I believe I just ran it direct to my m-audio firewire interface. I believe I put a very tiny lilght delay on it, eq's it a touch and ran that into a clean setting on the amp-sim that came with cakewalk.

I was struggling with the lead sound. I had recorded it originally with a strat through a tube pre to direct in, but it wasn't enough to stand out. My second attempt added a plug-in, but it was too harsh. This version I used the pre-amp again with different settings, but still can't get the right tone.  I tried mic'ing it through a small amp and I think for future that's how I may go. BTW - Wish it had come off like Peter Green!

I kept on expecting to hear Donald Fagen or Sade to break in with a vocal at some point. Fun tune! Good mix - i liked the slightly rattle-like tone of the lead guitar - like the action is set a little too low - Daddy Don't Live in that New York City No More!

Very worthy of a Steely Dan or Larry Carlton.  Yes, the guitar could still be brought forward in the mix and the drums back a bit, but being understated can work as well.  (I'm listening on computer speakers so may not be the best judge.)

Cool piano foundation and overall groove.

Love your guitar playing and tone...could come up a little, though.

    Very nice.
