Holding A Grudge
Watched the end of the Kennedy Center Honors last night, when the Eagles were being honored. Wow, no mention of Bernie Leadon, Randy Meissner or Don Felder. They had Linda Ronstadt doing a narration of the Eagles's early days, and not one word of Meissner or Leadon. She talked as if Henley, Walsh, Schmidt and Frey were the first and only Eagles members. Even the old film clips didn't show them.

Hi, If you think that was bad, try to read up on the Fleetwood Mac fraud ... even worse!

regardless of their undoubted commercial success later on, for my money the eagles were at their musical best in the early days.. my polite way of saying before joe walsh.. who incidently I also thought did better stuff before joining the eagles.

I did see The Eagles on their 3rd or 4th to the last final farewell tour some 10 or 12 years ago.

I saw Don Felder open for Sammy Hagar this past summer ... very cool because I was always a huge fan of the movie Heavy Metal.

Don Felder was as much of the Eagle sound as any of the rest of them. What a marvelous lead guitar player. His solos were perfect and defined a lot of the hits. My favorite member of the Eagles

Henley is an obnoxious jerk, even if he was merely an apprentice-level jerk to the master, Glen Frey. Watch "The History of the Eagles" documentary if you can stand it. I've always been a fan of the band, but if I'd been Don Felder there'd have been physical violence. I'm not the violent type, but when Frey and Henley explain why Felder and Walsh make less money I wanted to reach through the screen and punch them.

I don't know the whole story, i.e. how Meissner, Felder and Leadon left, but the Eagles not acknowledging that those folks contributed to their sound and success seems awfully petty.

Just for the sake of a friendly debate, I'll take another side. This was Frey and Henley's band. What they wanted is what they got. Period. Very few bands are democracies. It's almost always 1 or perhaps 2 members that run the show. Frey and Henley wrote 95% of the music and lyrics. Every body else was a contributing side man. Leadon left because they were getting away from country rock. Miesner left because he couldn't stand the pressure of having to sing his 1 hit and hit the notes. Felder left for a variety of reasons, including shooting his mouth off at a benefit and embarrassing Frey. The other was making the demand of having 2 of his own songs on the Long Run album. As was stated in the documentary, "the standards were high and his stuff didn't measure up". He over played his hand. Joe Walsh is a total Pro. He was given an offer when the band reformed. He could have passed. Same for Schmidt. Both understood the dynamic and were paid quite well for the tours. Not as much as Frey and Henley, but they understood why. As for the documentary, Frey and Henley agreed to do it under the condition that it be a warts and all film. These are not stupid guys. They knew just what was going to be shown. They knew how it would come across to some. I admire them for having the guts to do it. There really wasn't an upside for them personally (not including $) as I'm sure they knew how they would come across in certain parts. As for honoring former members, all of them were invited to the Rock and Roll HOF ceremony and were treated nicely and appreciative of their time in the band and got to perform together.

I try not to read too much about Henley, because IMO he has one of the best voices in popular music in the last 50 years and I like to enjoy hearing him sing. I just wish he'd take a chance with material sometimes, his last solo album was so disappointing, and they come along very rarely.

Holding a grudge is a waste of time and energy and it also effects the person holding the grudge as much as the others it applies to. Forgiveness is the key. Forgive and forget. Once you forgive you are free! It applies to everyone not just these guys. Doesn't God know how to forgive. He has got it right. I mean if Dave Gilmour and Roger Waters can get over it then anyone can. It just took them way too long.

Life wasn't all peachy keen and kum by yah in that band. As great as the music was, there were some serious things going on below the waterline.

As of 2014, Don Felder had an estimated net worth of $60 million. Randy Meisner was $15 million. Bernie Leadon $10 million. Pretty much a lock they didn't make that money as solo artists. As Henley sang "Get Over It". As Glen Frey said in their hall of fame acceptance speech, "95% of the time everyone in this band had a great time, but it's that 5% percent that everyone keeps talking about".
