Holy Spirit Sing
I have taken this old song I wrote back in 2003 and remixed it in X3; adding in new drum track using EZD2. I grabbed EZD2 while I was traveling on business, but didn't really get a chance to play with it much. Now that I have been back for a little over a week, I decided to try it out by updating this old song. I am using just the basic DW kit on the basic setting. I tapped out the beat and let EZD2 suggest some midi patterns to me. I used the "create a song" template in the program to allow it to suggest fills, verses, chorus's, etc. I thought it was very useful, and pretty easy to use. I think the drum tones are pretty descent. I have especially always like the cymbal sounds I got from the Toon Track products. Here it is, all original tracks with just new drums, some of the new plugs in X3 and through the console emulator. Holy Spirit Sing https://soundcloud.com/michaeljhanson/holy-spirit-sing

Love the Ric in that pic. I hear the vox, and the drums? But I don't really hear the other instruments until the solo (guitar) It feels like the mix needs some love. And that lead guitar was like shaking my laptop? Definite opportunities to improve the mix.

Thanks Robbie and Starise, You guys kind of both hit on opposite ends with your comments. Robbie, could you not here the bass? I was actually worried about the bass being a little loud. I tend to overdue bass in my songs because I like the bass to be a little more prominent than most folks. I could raise the acoustic up a notch, but it is the only other instrument in the mix. This is a simple arrangement. Acoustic, bass, drums, vocals, and a little electric mixed in here and there.

Just listened again in the cans (good cans) anyone who follows my music knows how much I appreciate nice cans I rolled off the bottom and gave you a notch around 91Hz (down 2.5 DB) and it cleaned up the rhythm guitar and allows the bass and kick better space (IMO) I also applied a cut in the low mids which sounded a little muddy to me -1.9db @ 375. and a little boost in the presence from 6K or so up to maybe 15. But hey? Everybody's a producer? I must have been listening ear buds before. Give something like this a try and see what you think. Your mileage may vary.

Hey Michael - nice song! has a Pink Floyd vibe to it. I think the low end is a little high and the lower mids are causing some mud. just my opinion. love the guitar work! nice clean solo. EDIT: just read Robby's post - I didn't go far enough to check it out on an analyzer/filter, but it looks like we're pretty much in agreement.

I was thinking ....Mike is channeling Neil Young here.... Serious influence of Down By The River..... without the chorus I think I recall hearing this before. Drums guitar and vox up to the chorus....then I can hear the bass. What bass sample are you using? It sounds a bit muddy to me on this system. The guitar solo is kinda almost too clean and upfront. The guitar at the end plays notes that conflict with the vocals.

Grit up that guitar solo! Everything else sounds pretty good except the bass is a bit muddy. You might also want to HPF the acoustic a tiny bit to remove some very slight boxiness. Nice work! Regards, Dan

Robbie, Thanks man, that actually helps a lot. Beagle, The Floyd vibe is what I hear the minute I started working on this song years ago. I don't often play the electric that clean. It was recorded on the neck pick up of my LP through my Classic 50/410 amp. Herb, Yes, it is right after the chorus that the bass kicks in. No samples here. It's the Rickenbacker 4003 through a 60w Bassman amp, mic'd with a sm57. Over 10 years ago, so hard to remember exactly, but that's how I recorded all of my bass back in those days. Dan, Thanks for the suggestions. I can try running the guitar through an Amplitube 3 setting and see if it gives it a little grit that works for the song. It certainly could be the bass that is causing all of the lower mud, I will check that out. I have been doing some painting of the interior of the house this weekend, so it will probably be next week before I can revisit this mix. Great suggestions so far. I really appreciate it guys.

Although the drums sound good, they sound like they are in the next room which is a 30x30' tiled bathroom. Lead guitar is a bit too loud for the song IMO.

I'm glad I could help! I got a tool to scrape the mp3 off the wire, and I figured it would be cool to actually analyze it and then comment. Yours was the 1st time I tried it It does a pretty good job? It's called soundtap, but there appear to be a number of apps that do this. I know others do this based on their specific advise? Your thanks (to me) made it worth the 20 bux I spent on the app :-) I think it's cool to pull it in and use tools to look at it (as well as use your ears?) I'll be selling your CDs this weekend! Good news and bad news? 1. The good news is, "it will be outside of a church?" 2. The Bad news is, "it will be Westboro Baptist..." LOL! (I don't know that he hates anyone.) Love the sinner, hate the sin...

A Rickenbacker? I would never have guessed. Hummmm.... I might try to see if there's perhaps a better way to record the bass. Famous ricko's include Yes & Rush..... they have a really, really nice sound. Kinda wish I had one hanging on the wall.... that would be my dream bass guitar to own. Try experimenting a bit, perhaps use a DI to get it in the DAW.... just thinking out loud here.

People either seem to love Ricks or they don't seem to care for them at all. They can have that distinctive Rick growl when you dig into them, but are much more versatile than most people realize. The one thing that I don't think they do well is slap.......their action is usually to low.
If I couldn't have a Rick, the next choice for me would probably be a Jazz...maybe a Precision. I wanted to like Warwick's, I like the way they look, especially the Thumb....but they just don't do it for me.

It's all good brother :-) One bass player to another. If I was to get another bass? It would be a Rick... I currently have the Warwick Thumb bass (fretless) and an Alembic Stanley Clarke Brown Bass (fretted) They are both "Top top notch..." What's really important is that it's right "for you." (but I guarantee you'd quit that Rick if you played my fretless)

Upon every ones suggestions, I have updated this one. Hope it all sounds more balanced this time around. I added some crunch and delay to the guitar leads, sounds even more "Floyd" now to my ears.

cool.... still listening on the computer.... gotta get on the cans....... guitar sounds better with some distortion on it. Most guitar parts do sound better with some edge in them.

I listened to the end of the song. I did find the drums seemed bigger than the rest of the song. Kinda like taking a pop stars drummer and using it in church. Doesn't quite fit. I'm not sure what the right answer might be. To tell the truth, it was the most apparent to me at the start of the tune. By the end of the tune I was desensitized. I listened to the end and I don't always. :-) That says something.

My only criticism is a slight pitch drift on some the "holy spirit sing" vocal lines.

Well? There's a lot of pitch drift throughout? But I enjoyed the piece "overall" I looked past those parts, but yes, they are there. MakeShift sings "from the heart." He's not the best singer? But he sings with passion and conviction. And to me? Well, "it works." And I'm a darn singer?

Rebel, Thanks for listening, glad you like the song. Robbie,Thanks for the comments as well! .....I guess... I have a lot of character, any way. I just do what I do because I must. I will never be a great singer, or for that matter a great guitar player, or bass player, and probably never a great song writer. But hey, I just do what is needed to make it happen. You know what they say, even a blind Squirel can find a nut every so often. Don't ever hessitate to let me know if I am wavering in pitch a little, It's the only way that I get better. That song was recorded and tracked about 10 years ago and I used the original vocal takes. I just did some quick pitch correction on the worst parts, but did not really look over the entire vocal track. When I listen back at material recorded 10 years ago, it is a great reality check to confirm that I am improving on every level....even vocally.
