Home Studio sonar7xl vocal mic question

Hey,
I just bought a mic for vocal recording. I posted a link below to the mic I bought. Question: what is phantom power and is it needed for vocal recording. The mic I bought has phantom power, but I'm not sure what it is and if it will make a difference.

Phantom power is simply the power supply for the mic. most condenser mics require 48v phantom power as yours does, i don't have much experience with condensers but i think that the mic will probably not work or be very quiet if phantom power is not switched on.

that's exactly correct.  it will have output so low that you won't be able to use it without phantom power being turned on for it.

but your fast track has phantom power on it to use.  there's a switch on the back.

There is one switch on the back that says guitar/line. Is this the switch?

paul - the m-audio fast track you have, is it a mk2 or the original (older, used one?)?

does the back look like this:

    or like this?:

if it looks like the 2nd one then you have the older model and you don't have phantom power.

if that's the case, you'll need to get a phantom power box or small mixer to use with the condensor mic.  here are a couple of recommendations:

It's the second one. I'm a little confused, or mislead by what I read on the M-Audio site when I purchased it.  When I purchased the M-audio fast track it said

"phantom powered XLR mic input > use dynamic and studio-grade condenser microphones"

it didn't say anything about getting a phantom power box. When I bought it I'd heard about phantom power, even though i was not too familiar with it. That is why I bought this one. Check out the link below, It has all the features. I'm stumped now. I really didn't want to spend more for a phantom power box.

I guess I'm going to have to spring for a phantom power box anyway. Do you think the Nady will do? It's the first link you posted.

that's a description of the MK2, not the original one.  where did you actually purchase it from?

and yes, the nady will be fine

Musician's friend. I thought it was the same as the description that I read on the M-audio web site. The nady is only 20 bucks, not bad. I'm glad I asked though. I would not have known. thanx

Musicians friend has a nasty tendency to sell older products without stating that they are an older version. especially on their audio interfaces thats why i like Sweetwater so much better, none of this non current stuff.

I don't think that generalization is warranted. As a buyer you have to look at the model and the specs. I don't think Musician's Friend sold him a newer model and sent him the older model. I buy almost all of my equipment from Musician's Friend and they are a very reputable business.

Paul - how much did you pay for it?  if you paid full price for the MK2 then you should call MF and make them send you a MK2 and pay for your return shipping of the original you have.  it's not worth the same price.

I never said they weren't a great place to buy gear i'm just stating that they sell the older model as well as the new model and don't always specify which is which. I have spent a lot of time trying to verify that the piece of equipment i was looking at was the newest model available i don't have that problem dealing with Sweetwater.

I don't have a problem with MF.  I have bought a lot of stuff from them and I've never had a problem.

but there's no need to buy the older outdated model UNLESS you got a good discount on it and it meets your needs.
