Homegrown Tomatoes
It rained so much here in the spring that I planted my garden really late and just this morning pulled radishes and cut lettuce for the first time. (It's my first garden ever!) It got thinking about a great old country song by Guy Clark called "Homegrown Tomatoes." He died a couple of years ago, but he was such a good songwriter. Thought I'd share some first class songwriting this Sunday morning: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-QzLIjL1u4 LyricsAin't nothin' in the world that I like better Than bacon & lettuce & home grown tomatoes Up in the mornin' out in the garden Get you a ripe one don't get a hard one Plant 'em in the spring eat 'em in the summer All winter without 'em's a culinary bummer I forget all about the sweatin' & diggin' Everytime I go out and pick me a big one Homegrown tomatoes home grown tomatoes Wha'd life be without homegrown tomatoes Only two things money can't buy That's true love and homegrown tomatoes I've been out to eat and that's for sure But it's nothin' a homegrown tomato won't cure Put 'em in a salad put 'em in a stew You can make your very own tomato juice Eat 'em with eggs eat 'em with gravy Eat 'em with beans pinto or navy Put 'em on the side put 'em in the middle Put a home grown tomato on a hotcake griddle Homegrown tomatoes home grown tomatoes Wha'd life be without homegrown tomatoes Only two things money can't buy That's true love and homegrown tomatoes If I's to change this life that I lead I'd be Johnny tomato seed Cause I know what this country needs Homegrown tomatoes in every yard you see When I die don't bury me In a box in a cemetery Out in the garden would be much better I could be pushin' up homegrown tomatoes Homegrown tomatoes home grown tomatoes Wha'd life be without homegrown tomatoes Only two things money can't buy That's true love and homegrown tomatoes

Yes, tomatoes are a fruit. Why, I don't know. I only grow them and eat them. I don't classify or name them. If I did, they would be a juicy fungus called shlamackelipinjuicin.

Scientifically speaking, a tomato is definitely a fruit. True fruits are developed from the ovary in the base of the flower, and contain the seeds of the plant (though cultivated forms may be seedless). Blueberries, raspberries, and oranges are true fruits, and so are many kinds of nut.

Hey, in my world fruit grows on trees and vegetables on the ground. Where ambrosia grows, nobody knows.

Ambrosia is from L.A. in fact I played in a short lived band with Burleigh the drummer before he was in Ambrosia. We now both live in the same city (although a different one we lived in back then)

I had no idea that you could grow a vegetable juice OR vegetable soup ... I've only seen it in a can, sorta like Ambrosia, which I often see on the shelves in supermarkets
