Honest question regarding stability of X1...

Some people run large track counts and seem really pleased. They say they have no real problems with X1. no "Show stoppers" and wouldn't consider going back  to 8.5.3. I can't name people off hand but I hope some will chime in. I do think I understand that Jim Roseberry runs X1 with no problem. (correct me if I am wrong... I was wrong once)

Other people seem to have nothing but trouble and aggrivation.

That would indicate to me one of several things... 1: an intsallation problem, 2: third party plugs that are causing trouble, 3: a computer that is not built as well as it could be to run a DAW like X1. 4: lesser hardware and drivers as in interface and midi controller.

It makes NO sense that one person...(actually a bunch of people) are running X1 with minimal problems, accepting what is known to be wrong, working around it and they are happy... other people key in on the problems and I gues see the glass as half empty...

I really, truly do not mean this as a slam on anyone. Everyone is different and all of our views are valid.
I am just wondering if the problems, real or perceived, or real and unacceptable (to some) may be problems arising from computers, interfaces, drivers, and third party stuff... since some seem to have no real problem and some seem to have nothing but trouble AND one thing that leads me to think this way is that Jim, who builds custom computers to run X1 seems to not have problems or at least seems to be happily working around them if he is having problems.

Now I could be completely wrong. Maybe those who are happy are not using the features of X1 that are giving others problems but I see the videos, I see Craigs video and so far as I have gotten through it everything seems to work. The Groove 3 videos seem to work fine, the CW videos seem to work.

If you are not having problems with X1, what are your thoughts on this? If you are crashing and having trouble, what are your thoughts?

Frankly, I have not had time to use it much this summer but what little time I have used it I have had no problems..  but I made sure to get a good i5, my track count is low, and I have an internal 7200 RPM HD and 4G of RAM.

I am really trying to be sure that I do NOT buy any hardware that will give me any trouble and so far so good. I plan to buy a Studiocat in December, until then I am on this lappy.

It will make me happy to know the answer as you see it to my question. If I am misunderstanding something.... please fill me in.

Thanks for your thoughts on this. I think it is a fair question, especially to CW, who has been taking somewhat of a pounding by some... some deserved, some not... IMO. I just a not convinced that it is all Cakewalk's fault if some are having problems. For the record, I am not talking about someone not liking the color scheme. I am talking about function, not form and I am not talking about those who dont like the new "drag and drop" and smaller menus... I like is myself... the GUI all makes more sense to me.

You work for Pro Tools don't you? It's the only logical explanation.

I only used acid a few times.  It made me very thirsty...drank insane amounts of beer, and I always felt like total crap for about 24 hours afterward.

But come to think of it...X1 made me feel the same way.

    So I stopped.  Both.

I liked acid a lot but after that Thanksgiving dinner with the turkey and dressing trying to crawl off the plate... and for some reason I always wanted to put on nice clothes the next day. I never understood that. I did learn one thing... acid will kill a cold, the next day you'll cough up, for lack of a better word, burnt tasting lugies... and then it will be gone, it happened to me more than once. Of course it has no medical use other that the ability to kill a virus and well, who would be interested in that.

Re: beer and acid. Never did that but I drank over a 12 pack after a handfull of some fungi once and let me tell you.... spinning patterns are pretty cool but you WILL be late for work the next day... laff.

So did X1 work for you or did you just not like it?

I use Sonar daily in my business.  I had tremendous stability issues with X1 when I first got it but over time I worked-out that by far the worst of it was caused by my Focusrite Liquid Mix.  I took that out of the equation and things are going much smoother.  I suppose it could be that Cakewalk needs to support the Liquid Mix better but that thing's drivers suck and it has problems on its own so I have a hard time blaming the DAW.  There are definitely some quirks and some of them are annoying but I don't have any problem getting a fast, high-quality work-flow out of it.  That's me....

I have used the current version of X1 for months in my commercial studio to great success.  I am happy my clients are more than happy. I can not complain.  Now I have a great interface, and a great computer and I feel like that helps a LOT.  I use that computer for recording only and have a laptop for web surfing and personal stuff.  I do use some plugins not bundled with X1.  Some work, Some don't.  No rhyme or reason it is that way. Some there are workarounds, and some I have just stopped using.  Some I have contacted and they sent me a different version that worked!
In fact I have been busy recording lately I am not in the chat rooms as much as I use to be.  Hopefully X1c will just straighten out the little quirks that sometimes seem to happen. :)

While I don't doubt that for some people X1 is unstable, for me it's the most stable Sonar version I've used. I could crash 8.5.3 on demand  by adding/deleting steps in the step sequencer too fast or for too long without resetting MIDI (white screen, Sonar frozen). Some bitbridge crashes as well.

On exactly the same hardware and OS (64bit Vista), X1 froze/exited a few times, X1b a couple of times, and that's about it. No crashes (so far) with X1c at all. Hotfix 255 means I have to reset my audio drivers to WASAPI every time I launch Sonar (reported and acknowledged bug), but other than that, for me X1 is stable (if not yet bug free - roll on X1c).

I built the PC myself (been building my own and for friends since the early 90s) using decent, solid components that were a little behind the cutting edge (aiming for maximum cost/benefit ratio) when I built it 2 years or so ago. No overclocking (not even the "default" overclocking Award BIOS's go in for).

X1 has a Vista installation entirely to itself. No firewall/networking (apart from necessary updates, then I disable the adaptor in device manager), no AV software and as few background processes/services as I can get away with. Other than switching UAC off, Vista's straight out of the box - Aero running, priority given to processes, no "special DAW tweaks" at all.

Maybe it helps that my setup is basically used as an as-many-tracks-as-I-want multitrack tape machine/MIDI sequencer with a giant built-in fx-rack, rather than heavily loading the cpu/RAM with multiple vstis and samplers all the time?

I mostly use the bundled effects, rarely use software synths or samplers (other than SD3), and if possible use 64bit plugs. I do use a few old 32bit VST third-party fx, but they work fine and have proven themselves stable over time (or I'd have ditched them). I've got under 20 plugins installed in additional to the Sonar bundled ones.

I use MIDI a great deal, but mostly to control hardware not vstis.

I'm just about to try X1 (and this time using a few vstis) on my far less powerful 32bit Vista "general purpose" Lenovo laptop. I'll be interested to see what happens.

Julien, ol pal, I think why you're gettin so many "quizzical" takes on your post is because this is a road we've all been down many times before.  So many times, in fact, that we've worn ruts in it.  And, unfortunately, it tends to not only elicit many sane, plain responses...like above...but could (and probably will) start another turf war between the "Jets" and the "Sharks" as I'm sure you, yourself, have witnessed most any day here in the cesspool of wanton craveness X1 forum.  And, while these displays of rapier-like (dim) wit and testosterone fueled bullying are, admittedly, fun to watch...they really don't get us anywhere in the long run.  I sincerely hope you get whatever your exact question is answered in this thread but be forewarned.  It could get ugly:-)

I don't want to sound like an ad, but there's no way around it. I use only computers that are integrated for music - I have a PCAL 8-core that's my "main axe," an older ADK dual core on standby, and two laptops - one PCAL that's good enough to do serious video, and one old Rain computer that refuses to die, so I refuse to retire it :)

Not only is Sonar very stable, but I just don't seem to have the Windows problems other people do. When I do have problems, they relate to external hardware - the most recent example being the CodeMeter USB protection device used for Record made the files in my ReCycle bin disappear when I opened it (WTF?). So I removed the dongle and everything went back to normal. I really run my computers hard, but they perform well, and so does Sonar.

Not to take anything away from Cakewalk, I know they put serious effort into stability, but hardware makes a huge difference.

I agree 100%. That's why I'll never build my own DAW again. Out of the 4 DAW's I've built over the years, only 1 has worked the way I expected it to. I can count on one hand the number of crashes I had and I used it for 5 ~ 6 years, plus it was my gaming rig also, it wasn't a dedicated DAW.

I had jim Roseberry spec my last PC and he taught me how to do burn in tests, test memory etc. I live in Australia so that was my next best option. I built it early in the year S8.5 was released. it's an i7 that I only use for Audi and Video work.

s8.5.3 runs smooth as silk as you'd expect when your DAW is purpose built and the components are selected by a pro DAW builder.

X1 - well let's just say that I'm hopeful that X1C will fix it so I can use it.

    Re:Honest question regarding stability of X1... 2011/08/10 02:00:04 (permalink)
The 2 or 3 crashes I had with X1 where only on a "dirty" system. I always make a back-up before installing something big, so there where no problems rolling everything back. I just re-installed the "with 8.5" image. Anyway - my first test was if 8.5 and X1 could happily live on a system that was filled with all kind of plugins. As it turned out Independence free and Studio instruments does not seem to like each other in a mixed X1/8.5 system. As it was not reproducible enough, and a lot of side factors (like traces of old drivers - especially korg nano) came into play I decided to test out  on a clean X1 install...

So - I installed X1 in a "clean" system where 8.5 was never installed (I always keep a "clean" image with only motherboard drivers and updates but no additional hardware drivers like sound cards drivers etc.). This clean install proved to be rock-stable, and I had no problems with Studio instruments and Independence free. I am not sure what was causing this problems in the first place, but I only can assume it was something in the "dirty" setup. I also had no graphical problems like the ones with the control bar, and the one and only crash I had was when I could verify a condition another user had here on the forum. This bug was reported.

I admit I do not push X1 very hard. As average I use about 6 to 15 soft-synths together with about 5 to 10 audio channels, and a few plug-ins on each channel. The only program I have installed before installing X1 Was the older Project 5, but they seem to happily live together. For Synths I have mainly the NI ones and a few freebees...

So - that's it. Clean install and no problems...

    Re:Honest question regarding stability of X1... 2011/08/10 04:04:41 (permalink)
Like the OP I've often wondered about the why it works so well for some and so bad for others. I had also promised myself to stay out of threads like this but this one hasn't degenerated yet so I'll share my experience.

I'm not a pro, "enthusiastic amateur that may one day do a bit more if I ever get the right premises", is how I'd describe myself. 'Untalented' is how someone once described me, a tag I'm particularly proud of.  I'm mainly recording my own songs but occasionally record other musicians/bands.

I'm probably 70/30 in the audio/MIDI mix and while I do use soft synths I tend to use my hardware synth (Sonic Cell) more.

My computer specs are below. 64 bit all round, I haven't even got X1x32 installed. I use jbridge mostly for bridging except those that don't play well with it. I only enable my NIC when I run an update session. Don't run any security permanently although I do have Zonealarm active when surfing and have it run a check from time to time.

It's also only used for audio and a little video. It's not a 'family' machine or used for games etc. I built it myself what seems like an age ago, I really should upgrade but if I'm honest I'm a a little wary given how well this runs and how much trouble some people are having with much better spec'd machines. I also installed X1 onto my existing machine that's been that way since I first installed V8.0.

Yesterday was a fairly typical days use for me, albeit a lot longer than normal. I was mixing a project (started in 8.3)  most of the day with a little compositional/idea recording on a new project to break the day up. I fired up at about 8.30 and apart from a few breaks for food, coffee, and wasting my time on here (via my laptop) I finished at 1 am this morning so that's around 12 - 13 hours use but fired up for nearer 18 of Sonar running.

In the mixing project I was working with about 20 tracks of audio with several VSTs in effects bins, 6 MIDI all of which were instances of dim Pro or Z3ta. (I'd already recorded the hardware synths) 33 busses in most with various reverbs/effects VSTs in their bins. That's active tracks doesn't count the archived/hidden/unused ones. I use the PC on just about everything and apart from the plot updating slowly while I'm changing settings during playback I've no issues there. Never seen the on/off bug reported by some.

How do I find it? It's the most stable version of Sonar I've used (started on V2) I can only recall one crash which happened while experimenting with cutting & pasting envelopes in another thread with ba_midi. The only bug that has stopped me from doing something I wanted to was the "not printing from staff view" bug. There really was no way round that. I love the look, I've opened V8 a couple of times since and thought OMG what a mess, not to mention feeling lost.

Other bugs I either worked round or didn't notice/have. Even the snap changing bug wasn't an issue cos all that was needed to get round that was open the PRV first set the snap in that and then hide it but not close it. I got so used to doing that it's still in my workflow now.

I love the new set up - screensets are my favourite feature that really are a revelation and have speeded things up for me no end. The smart tool is another great addition but would be better with some customisation. The way envelopes are dealt with is a big improvement for me I use a lot of envelopes (10+) on some tracks and now I can work on the one I want without accidentally moving clips, other envelopes etc. The ability to switch the multidock, inspector and control bar in and out are great. I don't use the browser much.

Problems / things I'm not so keen on / wish list items are..........

The limit on sends viewable in the CV, the lack of workable colour customisation that sticks (especially the active track). The separate snap settings will be a welcome return although I'm using Sonar plus ATM (thanks Ben) and I'm looking forward to the remembered last note length too. I'd like to be able to keep the inspector narrow sometimes too. I wish PC components could be saved as presets separately. I REALLY, REALLY wish the PC compressor and Tube saturator was controllable from my MCU and generally the MCU CS needs updating. It's still very usable but there are several quirks that need sorting out.
The ability to load and save SS individually with ideally some sort of SS manager would be nice as would even more SS in one project.

I get drop outs on a regular basis while switching buss sends on/off during playback, but other adjustments are okay. I sometimes get a dropout when changing screensets as well. Neither of those seem to have a pattern, I put it down to my machine being a little under powered.

That's about it. I'm very happy with it, it's now at 9 out of 10. Looking forward to X1C and I think as the X line matures it'll become even better.

******** Disclaimer: All of the above is IMHO and I'm in no doubt that others aren't finding it anywhere near as usable. ********

    Re:Honest question regarding stability of X1... 2011/08/10 09:39:31 (permalink)
Thanks everyone for the replies.. and I am glad it didn't degenerate. People whoare not having problems, decribing what they do and what they use is, I think, helpful. Assumptions can be made from it. If someone is having ongoing problems I would assume they don't know what is actually causing the problem or they wouldn't still be having it.
In any case I now have some ideas of what to do and what to not do and what irection to look if I start having problems.

1: Use a dedicated machine built to be a DAW, kept offline except for necessary updates.
2: Use mostly bundled CW effects and softsynths.
3: Use my HW synth when possible.
    4: Use a good interface.
5: Do a clean install and try to (I an using 64bit) keep everything 64bit.

That is pretty much my take away from this.

Old Pal... maybe it wont degenerate. I really was an honest question. I got a few good, concise answers from people who are not having problems and it helps me and perhaps some others. I tried to word the question to exclude not liking the look or the features and focus on function... though some mentioned liking the new over the old... but that isnt relevant in this thread. What is working and why is the point. This really is one of the more civil music related forums I have ever been on. Some here may remember the old HCGF and other forums in the late 90s, the flame wars, Carl & Mike (I will not mention last names) among others. Things could be much worse, much worse indeed... in fact I shouldn't say worse because really things have to be bad to get worse. There is a great group of people here.

    Thnks for the help,

    J

I had jim Roseberry spec my last PC and he taught me how to do burn in tests, test memory etc. I live in Australia so that was my next best option. I built it early in the year S8.5 was released. it's an i7 that I only use for Audi and Video work.

s8.5.3 runs smooth as silk as you'd expect when your DAW is purpose built and the components are selected by a pro DAW builder.

X1 - well let's just say that I'm hopeful that X1C will fix it so I can use it.

I hope it does as well for you.

Here I have had a couple of times recently were it froze then crashed on me. My problem is that it does this very randomly. Hence, I'm not even sure why it does what it does.

X1b up to QF246 has been very stable for me.  Enough so that I started using it commercially with great results.  Last week I upgraded to QF255 and I had nothing but problems, so I rolled back to 246, and all is well again.  I've been told that X1c should fix the problems of build 255, so I will give it a try.  If it doesn't work I at least know which version works.

    All the best,

I love 8.5.3 and X1b and use it in the studio professionally, but have switched to another DAW for location recording after having MAJOR Timecode and other issues during recording for the BBC (and other location recordings), where 8.5.3 drifted so far off the timecode and the pitch that I did not even get paid for the gig (and we're talking pro TV rates). It failed on two separate machines on the same gig.

I have documented discussions with CW and hours of test files and CW admitted it was Sonar's 8.5.3 fault. I have not had the same problems since I changed the DAW I use for live work. However, X1B does not do it on the exact same PC and hardware, which was a surprise to CW when I informed them! So, instability? YES, enough to make me not trust Sonar ever again when the critical gigs come along. Sorry, but that's just the hard truth.

However, as a creative tool, X1B kicks butt like few other DAWs, IMO.

I've got X1b246 on my production DAW and now that I've swapped for my new Focusrite Pro 24DSP interface the only REAL problem I have is the usual "teleport server has stopped" on exiting X1...and even that has lessened in frequency and severity.  I do have quite a number of small, seemingly random and quite"nutty" for lack of a better term quircks that are more or less constant.  Like my "no notes in the PRV" the first time I enter it (and, for John T who gave me the good idea to check and see if I was pressing an incorrect key before entering the PRV, Nope that's not it, I've been checking) and the occasional track that just quits playing for a while and then just starts playing again...ghost in the machine type stuff that is more of a trivial nusance than a showstopper.  I love the smart tool and the new envelope structure and much else about X1b.  But I'm still looking forward to X1c.
