Hooking Zoom R16 as Audio Interface to Sonar X1

Looking for a little help. Here's my situation:
  • I have the R16 hooked up to the laptop (HP Pavilion dv7, 6GB, 64 bit Win7)
  • Loaded R16 drivers from Zoom, and I see the Zoom in Sonar X1.
  • I choose ASIO drivers, 24 bit, 48K. No dithering.
  • Plug headphones into the R16, arm a track and start recording. I hear the metronome on the R16 (which is controlled from within Sonar).
  • I hear my voice and stuff, coming thru the Zoom built-in mikes.
  • Sonar display moves along as if it's cooperating. But nothing is recorded.

The Zoom shows 48K Hz, so it listened to what Sonar told it.
Any ideas? I looked on the web for a simple Sonar X1/Zoom R16 tutorial. Or any tutorial, simple or not. No dice.

I've seen posts on this forum both ways: some people rocking along, it's all good. Others stuck on the Go button. I guess I'm somewhere in between. Thanks in advance for any advice. A step-by-step is what I'd really like, but advice is good.

What does it show for the Input on the Track itself that you are recording to?

Also, when you Right Cleck on the speaker in the lower right corner of your desk top, does it list the R16 as your default device for playback/record?

Good points from both Mike and Charlie.  I use a Zoom R24.  I think you need to check your input like Mike suggested.

    In sum:
    • Track input shows as 1st R16 Stereo input.
    • R16 is default device in Windows mixer at this time (ie, when I plug it in).
    • Have not scrolled far right. There are definitely clips "recorded" at the beginning of the track, just nothing in them. I'll check when I get properly moving today (it's 5 AM at the moment ).

A friend asked me if R16 record lights come on when I arm the track. Answer is "no". Is that germane? I was just testing it out, and using the R16 onboard mikes. Perhaps I should use another R16 input device (assuming, like the Mackie, these correspond to successive channels on the device)? I'll try that, though I don't think any R16 channel record lights came on when I armed for Recording.

    Update:
    • I powered the R16 (with wallwart). Previously, it was only powered via USB
    • I chose the last R16 input device (which I think corresponds to the last 2 channels on the R16, treated as a stereo)
One (or both) of these did something. I now see levels moving in X1 when I speak, and sure enough, I recorded my voice.
However, when I play it back thru the R16, it's all scratchy and lo-fi. Surely that's not right. Have not checked to see if that's an R16 playbck artifact, or actually recorded that way. Gotta get to work, will check later.

Bad playback is an artifact of R16. The WAV file on the disk is clean.
I guess I need to go to Zoom-land to see how to fix that issue. Unless it's a setting in X1?
Still, I can certainly use the machine.

Okay. I can record. Fine. But the playback is scratchy, crummy. Indicative of dropouts. Very hard to listen to.

The only thing available to me is the ASIO Panel on the Driver Settings tab. All other latency setting controls are disabled. Changing the buffer size has no effect on the scratchy playback.

Is there ANYTHING I can do to fix this? I've seen references to ASIO4ALL as a potential help. But I can find no download site that looks safe. (www.asio4all.com is some German site that doesn't even have anything to click). I've also seen hints on the net about a Sonar R16 plug-in, but cannot find anything that admits to being that on the cakewalk site.

I may be able to limp along with this, but it kinda sucks. Any help is appreciated.
