Hot Audio + Trimming

Hey guys. I'm wondering if someone can point me to a plug-in in Sonar to take a hot audio down to say -18dB. I was watching this guy using Pro Tools and he placed a 'trimmer' plug-in before each track - and made a template with this on all tracks - so as to take 'hot' audio - peaking at 0 etc - down to this more manageable level. It was visually measurable meter-wise.

I could only find the consul emulator channel and used the trimmer to lower the audio...but that's probably not the best option.

Thanks

Hi. You could just use the gain knob in the Pro Channel, or the gain slider in Track View, and drag it down to -18.
Or adjust gain via the process menu.

All the best.

Note that using the Process/Gain dialog alters the actual waveform and the gain dial/slider on the track merely alters the level at which it's processed by the track fx/sends/main fader.

sonically it should be the same ... BUT ...

process/gain is destructive (i.e. not reversible, bringing it down by 20 dB and then up again by 20 dB will truncate lower bit information which contains ambience and depth) while the gain dial/slider is reversible (simple real time scaling of audio level)

If this is real time recording don't do it. Adjust the input to your audio device by adjusting the level going into it. Doing so after the fact will do nothing. The audio has already hit the analog to digital converter of your audio interface and is streamed to disk. What you see in Sonar are the record meters of the audio after its already been recorded. This is why it is paramount to set proper levels before you start recording. keep the meters at unity to have an accurate reading.

Thanks guys. I ask because I don't always have control of files' levels sent to me from clients. Cheers.

Then I would use the gain knob / fader
