How Can I change the Pitch of a song?
Hey All, I have Sonar Professional. I would like to take an audio track (in this case a song) and drop the pitch 2 steps. I cannot seem to find a way to do this? Any thoughts? Cheers, Mike

First save your file AS something like *pitch change*. Select all the clips and go to *process* and *transpose*. Sonar can do some very bizarre things to the pitches so you might have experiment and alter some of the notes afterwards. This is also a good way to get some stochastic elements into your work BTW. Another possibility is to use melodyne.

Is your project all MIDI, All Audio, Some of both? It sounds like you are asking about a full song mixed down to Audio that you want to change the pitch of. If that is the case. Use Melodyne Don't expect miracles, but this is how you do it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGA-kT9weXY If you have all the individual tracks that go into output song, you can bet better results, but it will be more time consuming.

I use Autosnap for singular audio files. open the inspector and check "Enable Stretching". you will find other options within the inspector to help you change as your needs specify.

Brian, My project is all audio. I have imported an audio file and it's about a 1/4 step flat. I want to change the pitch to bring it in tune. Cheers, Mike

Melodyne will do it. I just tested on a stereo audio file three minutes long. After a couple whole steps away it gets to sounding pretty wacky but a half step sounded just fine so a quarter step should be fine. Just be sure the algorithm option is set to melodic, melodyne sometimes does the percussive initially especially with longer clips.

I find for most material, selecting it then choosing Process > Transpose gives the best fidelity.

But does transpose do 1/4 steps - My question exactly. Old versions of Sonar actual a pitch change and a time compress / expand

You said 2 steps originally - which is it? Also, do you need to change pitch without changing duration, or do you want duration to change with pitch, like tape varispeed?

I have used Sony's pitch shift plugin in the past which comes with Sound Forge, but now I'm using the Waves SoundShifter Plug-in which, to me, has a higher fidelity. Or, just use what Craig advised.

I do all pitch and tempo changing outside of Sonar, in Audacity which seems to me to have the best algorithms for that sort of work.
Cheers, Jerry

Audacity is very good, also Steinberg Wavelab and Adobe Audition. I have WaveLab in the tools menu. So I can mark the clips and send them via tools menu direct to WaveLab. After processing WaveLab sends it back to Sonar.

Melodyne is probably the best tool for determining cents sharp/flat. From there Audacity (free) is a good way to adjust accordingly (Audacity will pitch shift in cents either with or without altering length).
