How Good are RME 400 Preamps?

I'm thinking of upgrading from a M-Audio 192/DMP3 - Thinking about a single unit type like the RME 400 to keep it simple vs. another sound card and seperate pramp - Trying to keep around $1,000.

Are the preamps in the RME 400 as good as let's say the stand alone RNP or the Grace 101 type pre's?

Thanks

Assuming the 400 has the same pres as the 800, my only complaint about them is they lack a pad. Trying to record loud guitar amps with hot condenser mics has been impossible without an in-line pad, as the input gain will not go low enough to prevent clipping. Otherwise, they sound very clean. No character to speak of, but very clean.

I'm contemplating getting a FF400 myself. What's the story with pads on the mic pre's?? I downloaded the FF400 manual and it seemed there was a reference to pads on channels 3/4. But I wasn't able to determine the real story about the pre's. Since I'll be recording LOUD guitar amps from time to time, if the FF400's pre's don't have a pad and are subject to overload, that may be a showstopper for me....

    Thanks,

The RME pre's are pretty good...
But they're not as good as the Grace units.
(Not surprising when you consider two channels of Grace pre's cost about the same as the FF400)

Can anybody speak to the existence of a pad (or not) on the FF400 pre's ??

    Thanks,
