How Well Is CbB Being Supported By Third Party Manufacturers?
I'm really beginning to wonder how much support Cakewalk by Bandlab is going to be getting moving forward by the makers of third party plugins and hardware manufacturers and if Bandlab is going to help us out with "non support" issues. Izotope's lack of support for their products, at least their new Vocalsynth 2 is kind of telling and perhaps should cause a bit of concern for us in this community. Skyline UK's recent post on Vocalsynth 2 has me a bit concerned, coupled with some other issues I've seen on this forum regarding non support from other hardware/software makers. Below is the response Skyline UK received when he voiced his concern about an issue with VocSynth 2: Skyline_UK I emailed iZotope support to ask about setting up VocalSynth2 in Cakewalk BbBL/Sonar and received this very disappointing reply: (My italics below) "Thanks for reaching out to iZotope Customer Care. Please be advised that Sonar is not a supported host for VocalSynth 2. Supported hosts include Logic Pro X, Ableton Live 9-10, Pro Tools 10-2018, Cubase 9.5, FL Studio 12, Studio One 3, Reason 10, Reaper 5, and Bitwig Studio 2. While you may be able to achieve partial functionality, the product’s behavior and performance will likely be unstable and unpredictable. For these reasons, iZotope cannot provide support for this workflow. I apologize for any inconvenience. For your reference, full OS/DAW compatibility information can be found here: https://www.izotope.com/e...design/vocalsynth.html *Specs found at the bottom of the page I hope this information is helpful. Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance, and thank you for being an iZotope customer!" It seems they'd completely written off Sonar before it was even acquired by CbBL. The response explains why I was getting appalling sounds from the demo. The final 'have a nice day' line made me laugh. Well, as it happens I remain an iZotope customer because of their excellent Ozone8.
There is also a recent thread by one of the members here regarding Native Instruments lack of hardware support for CbB. I use almost exclusively third party plugins. I use products from Toontrack, Spectrasonics, Izotope, Native Instruments, and Waves among others and so far I haven't had any trouble with any of them. I just completed two projects on CbB and have had no trouble. I even have Izotope's Vocalsynth ver 1, and while I haven't used it in a project since upgrading from Sonar X3 Studio to CbB, I tried it and it seems to be OK. But Skyline's response from Izotope above and the other issues various users have mentioned here makes me wonder what the future will bring and will we possibly start having issues with various third party soft/hardware as we update our products with them. It seems as if these third party makers no longer want to respect Cakewalk users and we're becoming second class citizens among these third party manufacturers due to us being Bandlab customers. Any further thoughts? John B.

I also should add here something that happened to me shortly after upgrading from Sonar X3 to CbB. I've used a product from IK Multimedia called Miroslav Philharmonik Orchestra and it always worked fine in Sonar X3. After I upgraded to CbB I found that it was no longer in my instruments bin. I re scanned all of the VST folders and even saw the .dll file in the folder, but in the DAW the instrument didn't appear. I tried making a separate folder just for it, copied the .dll to that folder and scanned it, but the instrument still didn't appear. Then I went back into Sonar X3 Studio and, alas, it was even gone from that and I used Miroslav in a recent project before I upgraded to CbB. So the only conclusion I can come to is that CbB broke my Miroslav to the point where it doesn't even work in Sonar X3. I've been intending to get around to emailing IK Multimedia about the issue but haven't yet. I also plan to email Toontrack and the other manufacturers and ask them if I might encounter problems in the future due to their possible "lack of support" for Cakewalk by Bandlab. If this is going to be an issue with these entities, Bandlab should most definitely address it with them. If they can support Cakewalk under Gibson they should be able to support Cakewalk under Bandlab. JB

I am not the least bit concerned about third-party support. That iZotope employee needs a few more months on the job, hopefully under the tutelage of a more seasoned mentor. He just saw a loophole that allowed him to blow off a customer. I am more concerned about third parties continuing support for their own deprecated products, such as Miroslav. You won't get any help from IKM, regardless which DAW you tell them you're using. They'll tell you to "upgrade" to SampleTank3 and then import your Miroslav files into it. Relax, CbB did not break Miroslav. Put it back where it originally was installed and run a re-scan in X3 to make sure all is well there. Then make sure that the file location is included in CbB's scan paths and re-scan there. If it still doesn't show up, see if you can scan/load/use ANY 32-bit plugins.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

Hi I sometimes had problems with some dlls after an update and I often solved it by moving these into a subfolder. After that they had been recognized by Sonar! Just to give a try ... Bassman.

In addition to SPLAT/CbB I also use Studio One and I have noticed that there are some 3rd Party products that omit S1 from the list of supported platforms. I do understand that there can be a 32/64bit compatibility problem with older plugins, but... Call me naive if you like, but I thought vst2 and vst3 were globally accepted standards and that if your DAW supports vst2/3, then any vst2/3 plugin should work with your DAW. Where does this logic (no pun intended) fall down?

It is very well supported by other software companies and this should, if anything, be even better in the months to come, considering the market share that Cakewalk is going to be grabbing due to the fact that it's free. It's as bitflipper says, the representative you had contact with didn't find Cakewalk by Bandlab on their compatibility list, thought they had found a way to close your ticket quickly and did so. It's up to iZotope to make their software play well with as many DAW's as possible, otherwise they will lose sales if word gets around that VocalSynth 2 doesn't work with Cakewalk (or any other reasonably popular DAW). Unless they think that people will instead drop their free DAW and buy a >$250 DAW so that they can have one that works with a $150 plug-in.

I was also wondering if Skyline UK understands that he is supposed to expect somewhat "appalling results" from Vocalsynth 2 in that it is a "special effect" plugin and not plugin that is supposed to necessarily enhance your natural sounding voice. It can be used to fine tune a bit, but mostly it's a special effect. JB

For years, iZotope has continuously marketed products to me that I already own. They have also said the Spire will remain iOS only. I really wouldn't get too worked up that CbB doesn't fit into their support plan.
However, if you want to buy a second or third copy of their software, they will be more than happy to assist you.

Johnbee58 Supported hosts include Logic Pro X, Ableton Live 9-10, Pro Tools 10-2018, Cubase 9.5, FL Studio 12, Studio One 3, Reason 10, Reaper 5, and Bitwig Studio 2...
If you were to take that list literally, that would mean that Cubase 9.0, Studio One 2.5, Reason 9, and Reaper 4 (many only a year or two behind) are on the unsupported list and therefore "might cause problems". Also, you'll notice Studio One 4 (the latest version) is not on the list... So that's not supported too! Bottom line, plugin devs are writing to the VST2 and VST3 spec -- that's all that matters. If there happens to be an incompatibility with a DAW that has thousands of users - supported or not - and the problem is on their side, they will work to fix it. They are a business first and foremost, and don't want a bunch of ticked-off users badmouthing them on the forums for not supporting DAWs that are only a year behind.

Remember that VST isn't a plug-in spec, it's a spec for communication with the host. If the host implements the spec properly, and so does the manufacturer, it's going to work. However like MIDI, just because something is in a spec doesn't mean it's implemented. For example the VST3 spec allows to suspend operation if the plug-in doesn't have audio passing through it, which can save CPU power. However, both the host and plug-in need to support this feature.

Also not on their "supported" list: Mixcraft, Wavelab, Samplitude, Digital Performer, MuLab, Pyramix, and Harrison Mixbus. Whatever. Last time I checked, iZotope were licensing their technology for inclusion in both Mixcraft and Cakewalk, and Ozone Elements 8 works great with both programs on my systems.

We're having conversations with a lot of 3rd party companies to get them up to speed, make sure marketing is updated (SONAR -> CbB) and that any internal ways in which they used to detect/provide support & integration hasn't broken as part of the switch to a new application & registry files :-) Sorry for the inconvenience in the meantime, and support staff do take a while to catch up!

The day iZotope plugs no longer work in CakeLab is the day I must find a new DAW. I've spent way more with iZotope than with Cakewalk in the last 5 years. Fortunately, I don't believe iZotope will stop working for me in the near future, and think Cakewalk is on very solid ground right now. As for the OP's question about support by third party manufacturers . . . we simply have to allow more time to pass, it's only been a matter of months. Things evolve in the programming world much slower than things evolve in the marketing world. In my hypothetical world . . . if I was a newb, and if I was shopping and testing all the DAWs right now, the choice would be obvious. It's just a matter of time until all the third party manufacturer's take notice.
Cakewalk by Bandlab, Cubase, RME Babyface Pro, Intel i7 3770K @3.5Ghz, Asus P8Z77-VPro/Thunderbolt, 32GB DDR3 RAM, GeForce GTX 660 Ti, 250 GB OS SSD, 2TB HDD samples, Win 10 Pro 64 bit, backed up by Macrium Reflect, Novation Impulse 61 Midi Key Controller, Tannoy Active Near Field Monitors, Guitars by Vantage, Gibson, Yamaki and Ovation.
