How can I get 24 channels of my analog board into Sonar?

I've been using a mackie onyx 1640 as my mixer firewired into my computer how ever that board setup is all pre-eq. I want to use my live board that is 24 channels and 8 bus. What is the best way to add this mixer to my studio?

Does your board have 24 direct outs?

Yes it does. Its a studio board primarily and has all the tape ins and outs and direct outs. Very flexible and is a step above an Allen and Heath and Soundcraft boards. Its a British board. The channel strips blow any of my Mackie boards away.

So are you asking for recommendation for 24 channels of I/O?

That would be an obvious solution... but you might also want to have some extra I/O for busses etc.

One thing to consider is that it's common for a primary I/O to have 8 analog channels and use ADAT for extra capacity. There's a gotcha... a 8 channel ADAT connection is limited to 48kHz.

What sample rate do you want to be able to work with a full track count?

I only need to work a 48. I'm thinking that if I have a 24 channel board with 8 busses then I'd be fine with 24 channels of I/O but maybe thats not right. I've always done everything in Sonar and not used an outboard mixer for any mixing, all withing Sonar. I'm looking to get the warmer sounds out of my Soundtracs board and the eq's. The mackie firewire is just a direct to Soanr and I get no benefit of the eq on the board.

So you you think that I need 32 channels of I/O - 24 channel strips and then 8 for th busses? Your hep of questions are valuable since the kids at Guitar Center have no idea what they are talking about.

If you're willing to repatch every now and then you could easily use a 8 analog +extra digital I/O box and find all kinds of uses for the mixer.

That said I haven't used a mixer with SONAR in several years.

I just use the "mixer" that comes with the I/O hardware.

    Check out the MOTU24io.

    http://www.motu.com/products/pciaudio/24IO/

    http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/24ioCore/

It should be available with either the PCI-424 or PCIe-424 card. It's very stable for me.
