How can I record Audio AND Vision from my Sonar X1?
I have Sonar X1 Studio (X1c build 319) – X 64 and an Edirol UA-4FX interface (no longer made) which rest within my Acer Aspire (All in one PC) Z 5610 with a Realtek HD Audio sound card. OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Edition. The interface acts as an Audio / Midi input and output. When I playback my work from Sonar it goes through the interface and I listen through headphone connected to the interface. I have never been able to get Sonar to recognise the PC’s sound card and playback through my PC’s speakers. I am an amateur, hobbyist messing around with Sonar for nearly 3 years. Sometimes it drives me mad but I have got to the stage where I can produce simple compositions, and use software synthesisers. Users of this Forum will realise that using the staff view on Sonar will display the musical notation of the track viewed. It will also allow me to put lyrics and chords onto the manuscript. When the track is played the time line will follow the notation, lyrics and chords (much like the bouncing ball concept) making it easy to play along with on a guitar (or any other instrument). What I have been trying to do is record the staff view to produce a video of the music notation and lyrics of various songs for demonstration purposes. I have tried two Screen Capture programs, being: (1) Microsoft Windows Expression Encoder 4 Capture and (2) BB Express FlahBack Recorder. Both of these captured the video in vision but with no sound. I suspect the reason for this is related to me using an ASIO driver with the interface. Perhaps the Realtek sound card does not respond to ASIO. (To be truthful I don’t fully understand the concept but I’m sure there must be someone out there who can help). Perhaps someone who uses Sonar X1 has tried to do what I am doing and has been successful. Perhaps someone who has a similar set up to me could try it on their system and see if it works. Can anyone help please? Alan

How can I record Audio AND Vision from my Sonar X1? 1.) You should not use the internal sound chip in your PC (realtec). It has no ASIO drivers. It really has no decent drivers written for audio recording and your performance in sonar and your PC will suffer. so look into getting a decent sound card/interface. MOTU, ECHO, M-Audio and focusrite are all good cards. 2.) Sonar is not a Video recorder. You cannot record and edit video in sonar. It never stated it could, so i do not know why you think it can. It can only playback video that was recorded and edited in another program. Cj

Hi Cj Look at it like this - You know that you can take screen prints from your PC. You know that the staff view enables you to see a moving screen displaying the notation, lyrics and chords. Microsoft Windows Expression Encoder 4 Capture and BB Express FlashBack Recorder are programs that capture a moving screen shot. The resultant capture can then be converted to a video. These "capture" programs work on moving images and sounds when the sounds are through the PC speakers but do not appear to capture the sound when it is through an interface. I don't suggest that Sonar is a video recorder. Sonar is producing the images and the sound. Why will the Capture programs only capture the images and not the sound when the sound is through an ASIO interface? Is there a way to remedy this? That is what I need to know. I hope this makes my problem clearer. Alan

I am the worlds last one to understand video, but I see what you are trying to do and also why the capture program s not receiving the audio. You are correct that it probably is looking to use the sound from your Realtech. Three solutions I can think of 1- Simply record the screen capture without audio and then add the audio in another video program,,, I think even Windows Movie maker will work. 2- Bring the screen capture video back into the same Sonar project as a video. This may require converting it to Quick Time. 3- Switch to MME driver mode and Sonar should recognize the Realtech Audio . You may have to go into the Windows control panel and make it the default audio device. Make sure to unplug the Edirol.

So, why wouldn't you record the video using one of those programs and then render your audio to a file and use VIDEO editor software to sync them up. I know that iMOVIE can do this as well as Photoshop Elelments. I can only imagine that there are many software programs to put audio together with Video...... wait a minute, can't SONAR already do that? Jim

i did this years ago, by using a patch cord to loop the output back into the audio device. not sure if you can do this with an onboard sound card. there may be software that can do that now...

dlion16i did this years ago, by using a patch cord to loop the output back into the audio device... There's your answer, Alan - I was ready to offer the same info if someone else didn't post it. You've gotten good feedback on this thread - You don't want to use both your interface and your computer's sound card. No need to struggle trying to get Sonar to play through your sound card - You've chosen the external interface for audio, as you should. If you patch cords from your interface's out into the ins of an amplifier, then you'll get sound on your speakers and won't be limited to only headphones. To use a video capture program for recording what you're doing in Sonar, just as dlion16 said, you need to loop the output back into the ins of the audio device - The cords mentioned in paragraph 2 above are temporarily taken out, put another pair going from the interface outs back into the ins. WATCH OUT - you'll need to start with low levels, experimenting with how high your level can be before you get feedback. Doing that will let you record audio as you do a screen capture of the Staff View, or any view you want in Sonar. As noted, Sonar's not a video editing program, but you Can do video captures with sound, like you've undoubtedly seen in video tutorials. That's how they do it. - Post-recording a sound track works too, but it's a lot more hassle. Randy B.

Oops. That's microphone or speakers. I'll have to check the recording computer to see which I have selected (this computer has a stock RealTek box).

I think that we can only choose one input signal inside Cam Studio. You can screencapture and record the sounds coming from Sonar but if you want to make a voiceover, it's not possible, you have to choose one or the other. I had this problem last year when I had to make a video tutorial for Coursera.

It's what I expected to do with Cam Studio but the program is very limited concerning inputs and outputs. But, for a free program, it's ok.

Let's say you have various inputs in your interface, Cam Studio will only show one (we don't choose the interface, but the input). Note that if you're using a mic in one input, you don't want it to go to Sonar because you're doing a voiceover explaining how to do an automation, for example. Then, you hear the sound of Sonar but not the sound of your voice. I don't know if they changed it in the new version but surely it's a problem with a lot of screencapture softwares, mostly, the free ones. I've heard that Cantanya is one of the best softwares to make tutorials because of the routing possibilities.

When I did this, and as I said before, I could get the microphone and sound from Sonar to record, because the signals were being mixed in my interface. One input into the vid capture program, and that one input is from the interface. The signal coming out of the interface is a mix of voice and music, controlled by the setting of the Direct/USB knob on the interface. Randy B.

But as the OP said his real problem is his audio interface does not show as an audio input option inside the capture program. This seems to be the issue. One other thing that might cause this is his on board sound card is still the default in Windows. Might work to totaly disable the Real tech and see if the capture program recognises the Edirol. If the only audio device it will use is the real tech it's no big deal to tell Sonar to use it in MME mode and switch back. Only issue could then be if the projects Clock rate is not available to the Real Tech. Which is another thought.. Might be the projects at 48 Hz and the capture program can only use 44.1.

Dlion16 and Randy you’ve cracked the problem. Remembering that this is all new to me I will describe what I have done to date, following your advice. The Edirol interface has audio input and output using RCA Phonotype connectors. It also has a “loop back setting” in its recording source. I have used a short phono type cable from an old stereo amplifier system I once used and joined the left and right inputs to the left and right outputs and moved the selector switch, on the recording source, to loop back. I have then I have re-tried the two Screen Capture programs, Microsoft Windows Expression Encoder 4 Capture and BB Express FlashBack Recorder. Expression still delivers video only. Flashback captured the video and the sound when I set the recording source to IN(UA-4FX) but it is not perfect as it “beeps” every so often, usually on the longer notes of the composition. I’ll need to fiddle a little with the knobs on the interface to see if it makes a difference. I’ll also try out CAM Studio and any other that anyone can recommend and is easy to use. I’m not adverse to purchasing a program but need to ensure it will meet my needs beforehand. For Cactus Music – I take on board your comment on the sample rate. The Expression Recorder allowed me to set that to 48 or 44.1 and I tried both options but to no avail. The Flashback did not give me the option so I’ve no idea what rate it is using, but it does produce sound. So now, more questions: - Does the action I have taken, as described above, make sense? Or am I missing something?
- The “patch cable” I’m using is just an old cable I had spare. Are there dedicated cables that would make a difference?
- Does anybody have any suggestions for an appropriate capture and video program that will not break the bank?
Alan

Another update, after a little studying of my UA-4FX manual. I have tried recording the screen video and audio without the patch cord but with the “loop back setting” in its recording source, and it works though I still have the beeping noise every time the playback hits a whole note (4 beats) and quite often when it hits a dotted half note (3 beats). Thus I do not need a patch cord so ignore my comment at 2 above concerning cables. Perhaps the "beeping" has something to do with the latency. I've been trying different levels to set in my UA-4FX but to date nothing is removing the beeps at the long notes. Does anybody have any suggestions please? Alan

And yet another update. Most of my compositions have some notes that are longer than a half note (or minim as we call it in UK). When I've tried the capture/video procedure with two compositions that have no notes longer than the 2 beats all is well, the video and audio are both recorded without any beeps. This indicates then the beeping occurs in measures containing long notes. The questions now are: Why? and How do I cure the beeping? Alan

I have found this to be very good with abilities to save/export many formats. http://www.movavi.com/screen-capture/ bout $50. You can select any window for video, and audio is whatever you hear on your speakers. No extra cables, etc. Excellent video Resolution. Excellent audio capture. Also a trial period for the software. The video editor not top of the line, but capture very good. Within the last few months due to better Video editing needs upgrade my Pinnacle Studio to Pinnacle Studio 17 Ultimate. It has 1920 x 1080 capture, doing great job. After the fact found out that you must have physical audio inputs to capture the audio. Hence next paragraph... On another thread in this forum VAS was mentioned...Virtual Audio Streaming. was $29 bucks. It is an outstanding little piece of software. Has abilities to redirect 4 virtual cables within my Win 7 system. I only use one stereo. does good job. Have used it several times with excellent results. Also a free trial period. http://www.virtualaudiostream.com/FWIW, the last few YT video's using visualizations used the Studio with VAS. Prior ones were Movavi pieces.

Beeping often occurs in trial versions of some software. Once the product's full version is purchased, the beeping stops. I don't know if that's the case here, but... maybe?

Back from holiday. I tried to download CamStudio and it caused nothing but problems. It introduced a program that replaced my search engines. I had to uninstall that program and reintroduce Chrome and Firefox. The good news though is that I have worked out how to record using Microsoft expression without any beeping on the long notes. So I am now writing to say problem solved and special thanks to Dlion16 and Rboweser who got me on the right track. Alan
