Played for many years with a close friend and pupil of Danny's.  Danny was more like a mentor to him.  I used to listen to him constantly telling me that Danny was one of the greatest guitarists who ever drew breath.  But he never played me anything by him.  So I thought...sure, right, you bet.  Didn't hear any of Danny's stuff until about two or three years before he died.  Then, of course, I couldn't get enough.  When most every other monster player says..."well there was this cat named Danny Gatton who put us all to shame"...you'd do well to listen.

And don't get me started on Lenny Breau.

I became aware of Mr Gatton when a friend who owned a record store called me at our bicycle shop one day and frantically said you have to come down and buy a CD I just got in stock.

He had received 2 copies of Redneck Jazz Explosion... he kept one and he wanted me to have the other.

It blew my mind!!!! Full throttle.

    Thanks Steve!

I saw the Stray Cats once in a small hall.

By coincidence I once dined at a restaurant in Hollywood where he was sitting at the next table. Nice guy.

I also saw the Brian Setzer Orchestra one night at a small club and it was astonishing.

He gave me a pick that night.

A good friend of mine did live sound (for 5 years running) for the Christmas show by Brain Setzer and his Orchestra.

Got to see them three of those five times. Fun show.

Oh boy they are coming out of the wood work now.

    Adrian Legg is a monster!

Joe Pass is an alien from outer space! I actually was watching the Satin Doll video this morning but didn't want to get tagged as an elitist old fart jazz guy so I figured I'd stay under the radar.

    Thanks for the great links!

You'd only be tagged "an elitist old fart jazz guy" if you downed other styles and told the people you downed "you're just not intelligent enough to understand jazz". Since I've never heard you make a mention of that, I'd say you're the furthest from an elitist. Share away. :)

Don't feel bad Danny my appreciation for guys like these by no means detracts from my appreciation for great Hard Rock and Metal guitarist such as yourself, to me it's all good and like a whole other instrument all together. I think perhaps all to often some folks misinterpret other folks tastes as them feeling elitist about about what they do. I also like most of the guitarist that you have mentioned except for one, Steve Vai. I have respect for the technicality of what he does, I just hate the way it sounds, the modes he uses..it all just seems like heartless noise to me after a bit. But I can hear the parts of your style that sound influenced by him that I find quite pleasant and unique I like hearing Steve Vai through your heart. I can think of a few other folks that has been influenced by folks that I'm not a fan of but I sure like what they took with them...Bapu's a fan of Frank Zappa...I am not, but I sure like the Frank in Bapu. I just love guitar, country, classical, metal, flamenco, it's all good. I love this every bit as much http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8FG7WVZUyg

I'm surprised that noone has mentioned this guy yet.  I love how the bass player also plays a tambourine with his foot...

Naw Danny, I thought you might one day... but I think you'd know it when you did and admit doing it... because you are a stand up guy!!!

If anything, I'm amalgamating a few different people's specific comments into one unified generalized comment that reflects my insecurities about being old, farty, and into jazz. :-)

BTW, I don't buy the "you're just not intelligent enough to understand jazz" fusion stuff either... I do think you have to develop and ear for later jazz... because it is built on older song forms that become barely recognizable if you don't know them inside and out.

By the time you have to start justifying kludged together song forms and disharmony with verbal excuses while calling it fusion.... I don't think it's jazz any more. So, personally, I just step back from that discussion... it is not about anything I am interested in.... I must not be smart enough for that stuff. :-)

George Benson? I was going to go with Wes Montgomery to cover that style... but that link above... WOW the band is just so, well, FANTASTIC. The drummer and bass player are killing it.

I wonder if it's obvious that Mr. Benson is laying back and playing it straight, simple, and slow for the sake of the song?

Guthrie Govan seems to really have it all, but I have to admit I wish he'd employ a tone that was a beautiful as the melodies he explores... and sometimes I don't understand why he can't work with the rhythm section a bit more integrally...  or find a rhythm section that can keep up and contribute to the whole of the song. It also seems to me that a player such as he depends on the highly compressed tone for sustain on the fastest tap passages but that that tone detracts from the soulful expression of the the more melodious stuff he plays. I guess that is why I was linking examples of guys that play lightning fast without all the compression and saturated odd ordered harmonics... to display the idea that fast playing and fret board competence doesn't have to be associated exclusively with a tone that seems less than ideal at times. If that makes sense?

    all the best,
    mike

Mike is renowned as the Coffee House elitist, he can't help himself so we gave him the job.

He's cute as a cactus though all prickly on the outside and all soft and mushy further in.

Being a bit of an oik I like his diatribes into the fineries of good taste, an example, since I've known Mike I've stopped lifting my left buttock when I fart as I now know it's just a little bit uncouth to do that.  Besides I can get some nice Miles Davis tones now by keeping the pressure up down there.

Just keep him away from the drum machines though (particularly Boss ones), as he has a tendency to chew on them.

Hey, Mike you elitist old fart, you know I luvs ya...
