How do I apply fade in or fade out to my tracks?

This question seems very newb (and in fact, I probably am a newb)
but I want to know an easy and effective way to apply fade in and out to my tracks.

Not only applying fade in and outs but I also want to know how to control volumes within tracks.

For example, I want to know a way to start out low on volume and slowly gains it while it's being played.

Thank you in advance guys! : )

Fades - put the curser high at the beginning/end of the clip in the track.  A little triangle appears.  Click and grab the fade handle and move it as far as needed.  Also, there will be a pop up selection of kind of fade.  If you click on the lower portion of the clip you can roll it back or forward, say to cover up noise in an acoustic track while the instrument ain't playing.  Use the split command to do that between sections of a take.

Envelopes can control volume, pan and all sorts of things.  Look it up in help, Envelopes, gain (I think).  It is a rather normal task, tho complex with so many things you can control with envelopes.

Hi, Kineticfs - The answers you've gotten should get you going.  The one referring to the manual was especially good - all you need to know is in there, so dig in.

I'm here primarily to say that while there are several ways to get instant fades, for me nothing beats recording volume envelopes in real time.  To have total control over what the results are is very valuable.  How to record a volume envelope?--ah---that's where the manual comes in.  Start with the Help tutorials available through the menu link in Sonar, but also crack open that PDF file of the manual.

To fade a .wav file in or out, select the file, goto Process > Audio > Apply Effect and you should see Fade in there.

To add a volume envelope to a track, right click in the arrangement area within the track, options will pop-up, the add Volume envelope is there and will display in your track after selecting it.

    Hope this is useful.
