How do I back out of X2a back to X2?

I am just having too many little things continually pop up with X2a.
I think it is time to go back a step.
Short of doing a restore of my entire system to a backup point taken just before the X2a
upgrade, is there an easier way?

Thanks

if it was a quick fix you could roll back, but i think you'll have to reinstall sonar or restore back to that point, unless there is a way

Doesn't the install of a newer version place a copy of the old .exe in a special folder somewhere?

All you have to do is rename it and drag it back to your working folder.

Sorry to be a bit vague, but this is from memory.

No - reverting from X2a back to X2 involves more than just renaming the sonarpdr.exe file.

There are other inter-connected changes to other components.

In my opinion, the best way to go back to X2 would be to completely uninstall X2a, including removal of roaming data, registry keys, and such - there have been other threads that cover the exact process of doing this - I believe Britol_Jonesey has put them up a few times.

After the complete removal of all things X2a (no need to remove plugins and that sort of thing, I am only speaking of the main program), install X2, and you should be fine.

    Re:How do I back out of X2a back to X2? 2013/02/19 08:31:44 (permalink)
    I can do that:

    1) Completely un-install SONAR from your computer. This is normally done from Start | Programs | Cakewalk. This will not remove any of your project files or audio data.

    2) Open the Run Command
In Windows Vista and 7 this can be done by holding down the ‘windows’ key and pressing ‘r’

    3) At the prompt type regedit and click OK.

***Backup your Registry before making edits - you do this by clicking the File menu, Export Registry File.   ***

    4) Now delete the following Registry keys:
     HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR Producer\X2
     HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR Producer\X2

    NOTE
that this will remove any effects presets and key bindings you may have made in Cakewalk. You can back these up separately if you like, using Options|Key Bindings, Tools|SONAR Plug-in Manager, and Options|Colors. Hit F1 in these views for detailed instructions on how to do this.

    5) Open the 'Run' command again.

    6) Copy and paste the following into the prompt:   %appdata%\Cakewalk

    7) This will open your Cakewalk Application Data folder, right-click on the SONAR folder and choose rename.

    8) Rename this folder SONAR X2 Backup.

    9) Open the 'Run' command again and type msconfig Click OK and then click on the Startup tab at the upper right of the window that opens.

    10) Uncheck all items listed, click OK, then restart your computer. You can always recheck those items again at a later time.

    11) Then reinstall SONAR. Make sure to have any virus scanners disabled on installation. It is not required or recommended to turn off any windows services.

Here is a link to a forum thread with complete removal instructions for X1 (would be the same for X2)L

    http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=2437932

Obviously substitute X2 for X1, the instructions are a few posts down in the thread.

    wow!
thanks guys very much for this info.
    Very detailed.
    Greatly appreciated.
I really hate having to do this but I think I'm about all used up on
these little things that I keep encountering.
I will look over all this info and see if the pain, and potential risk, of doing this is worth the benefits.

just occured to me, I still have version 8 and X1 as installed software on
    my machine.
Assuming it might be prudent to remove these as well?

    It's your call really.

There are a couple of plugins that aren't shipped with X2 - like the Pantheon Reverb, so if any of your projects use this - and you still want to use it = you'll have to install just the plug after you've installed X2

The removal instructions above apply equally to all previous version, just substitute 8/8.5/X1 for X2 but do them sequentially - if you're going to uninstall 8 - do all of that before moving on to removing X1

Oh yes - make sure all of your new install is done by running "As Administrator"

Do you use the Dim Pro synth? If so, what version?

If you're on 1.2 then there's an update to 1.5. Removing 1.2 MIGHT screw up any projects referencing it.
If you want there's a detailed instruction somewhere for completely removing DP

If you did you the Lexicon Pantheon and still want to use it. Remember to export your presets (if you created any) before deleting SONAR 8.

    Good calls, all.

You can certainly leave prior versions of Sonar in place, unless you are out of room on your hard drive.  Each version installs to its own set of folders, although I am not 100% sure on the AUD.INI file (there may be just one of those, can't remember, but anyways prior versions being on your system will be fine).

Doing an uninstall and re-install are not risky - just make sure you are careful when deleting the registry keys (do not delete the wrong ones, and don't run your fingers across the keyboard in a fit of sneezing).

It is important to run the install as Administrator - and I mean specifically right-clicking and choosing Run as Administrator - even if you are already an administrator.

I checked on my system and AUD.INI is in the roaming data for my user, under an X2 folder, so it would appear that there is a separate one for each version of Sonar.

I do NOT know if this file would be shared by having both 32 and 64 bit versions of a given release both present on a computer, but at least it looks like removing the X2 one would not impact any prior releases at all.

yeah the plugins that were already in place from previous versions that would get wacked are one of those pain points to consider.
Pantheon is widely used in my projects too.

@Jonsey - yes I use Dim Pro. At 1.5 currently. I shouldn't need to do anything with that after doing the un-install re-install though since it is a
    separate product, right?

    Running as administrator, good point.

As I think through this, I am considering the option of just going back to X1
since it is still on my machine.
Wait it out until a fix comes out for X2 that addresses some of the issues.
I can live without many of the X2 features, especially lanes.....
Love the idea, not so much with the reality of using them.

So thanks again for all the input on this.
Lots of effort involved so not a decision to be taken lightly.

Correct - don't uninstall your exiting version and don't attempt to install it again
