How do I cut or replace tracks???

From the above picture, is there a way to cut that particular circled part?
What I basically want to do is to replace that circled part with the bottom track. (#5 track)

Sonar usually lets me to cut tracks, but it just wont let me this time.
(Probablly its because the track is a drum track with a step sequencer?)

Help please!

use the split track function with a right click/split track..just keep in mind, you cant paste audio into a midi track or vice-versa.

You are correct kinetic...you can't split it because it's a SS clip. Bounce it to a regular MIDI clip (via the clip's right-click menu), and then you will have the option to split.

Your comment that Sonar won't let you cut that part got my attention.

It may not apply here, but I have found Cut, Copy, and Paste using keyboard shortcuts to stop working sporadically.  Sometimes the related menu options also stop functioning.  If I save my work and reboot Sonar, the problem goes away.  Just mentioning this in case it is confounding or confusing the issue here.

I am trying to take note when this happens so I can document it as a bug, if that's what it is.  It may be just a very unusual scenario or program path I am stumbling upon due to my particular work style.

...Bounce it to a regular MIDI clip (via the clip's right-click menu)...
How do I bounce it to MIDI clip?
Right-click on the clip and select "Bounce To Clip".

Interesting issue - I've never dealt with step sequencer tracks, but I'm aware from reading on the Forum that they're in a unique format, different from regular MIDI - That's odd, for them to be an animal unto themselves.  Step sequencing was a major part of regular MIDI back in the 20th Century when it started, so I don't understand why a whole separate thing was developed for step sequencing in Sonar.

I've never even looked into this current step sequencing because the basic concept of step sequencing can be done in the PRV.  Turn the grid on, click notes--you're step sequencing--So--what's the attraction of using a separate utility?--?

SS allows you controls that you don't have in PRV.  You can do some of the same things, but different ways. Such as swing, velocity, flams, and such. I have just messed with it a little bit but I see there is a lot of potiential there. Once you have it the way you want in SS you can bounce to MIDI and all the nuances will be there still.

Thanks, Grem - PRV is the center of my MIDI universe because I play my keyboard.  But I do understand the attraction of working one bit a time, even though it's a more cerebral approach.  My first forays into "electronic music" several decades ago only provided step-time entry for drum machines, for instance.  It was interesting, but I was relieved when MIDI became a more flexible and capable protocol.  It's kind of fun to see that the old-school step-sequencing thing has become in vogue again.

One of the cool features of X1 is that it uses the same tools across audio files and midi files, so the same procedure works for both.

    1. Start by having the Smart Tool selected.

    2. Click on track 5 above the center line of the track, to set the now time where you want to start the split at.

    3. Now click the same track anywhere below the center line to highlight it (it should turn black).

    4. Press the 's' key to split it at the now time.

    5. Repeat steps 2 through 4 to split it where you want it to end.

    6. Hold the Shift key and drag the clip to track 4. (be sure to delete any midi data in that part of track 4 so it doesn't overlap it if you just want to replace the data with the new). By holding shift, you can drag up and down without being able to move it left or right so you know it will still be in the same time slot).

That's it. This works the same for audio or midi. I haven't used the step sequencer, but I would imagine it's just midi data anyway, so it should work fine.
If you are new, my suggestion is to learn all about the Smart Tool and all of the cool things it can do. It really is Smart.
