I'm really glad you asked, because I know the right answer! I try to use the one that sounds or works best, but that's exactly where it gets overwhelmingly difficult. So, as that regularily fails, I pick the one with the coolest name.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Depends on what you want your music to sound like. If you're trying to replicate a band or orchestra select presets for those instruments, many of which are sampled from real instruments. TTS-1, Dimension Pro and True Pianos come to mind. If you're trying to create something totally new, use Rapture, Pentagon, Z3TA+, or other analog or digital synths to create new sounds. I spend a lot of time just listening to the different sounds of the softsynths and trying to figure ways to use them in a musical settings. The number of sounds available is infinite and can be mind boggling.

I usually put on ear muffs so the sound doesn't distract me and I click through the presets...usually picking the one that is dramatic and stands out compared to the others. It's the only consistent way to a pro mix that I can recommend. Also...I find a baseball bat usually works best for taking down hornets nests;-) YMMV

Trying varying it with maybe the choice of drink you are enjoying at the time...you may also find that after a few drinks that your inhibitions fade and you might find yourself branching out of the box...I know it sounds scary, but man what a ride it has given me before! ....and SAVE as mentioned here...don't try to remember when using this method!

What's a preset? It's similar to a post-set, but different. I don't think they use presets when installing fences, though I could be mistaken.

Where can I purchase the signature McQ 'Sizzzle' presets for the Sonitus suite? I've searched the interweb and cannot find them anywhere. I'd pay good money for those. Are they still available? I want that characteristic phatt punch on my choral pads, and my vacuum tubes need more air.

mike_mccue I think the sizzzle may have only been available for a limited time at full price. It will likely be discounted tomorrow. Price fixed? I thought 'Waders' was a good EQ preset. It didn't remove any mud but it made you feel more comfortable about it being there.
