How do I export tracks so they sync up with tracks on another DAW?

Gents,
I've been asked to do vocal tracks on 2 songs on a tribute album for a well known 70's band. One guy sent me an mp3, one a wav file and an mp3 of basic tracks to use as a guide for the vocals.

I'm a grizzled veteran of singing and of recording *studios* but still learning how to use X1Producer. The only instructions I got from both parties were to "you know, sync up with the clicky thing and then email your tracks back"....I need a little bit better info than that, so hoping you guys have some reccomendations. (they're on the East Coast, too late to talk to them now)

Basically I want to send back 2 or 3 lead vocal tracks so they can choose, edit, whatever, plus stack a few harmonies on separate parts, basically choruses, on separate tracks. Then send them back .

Any ideas much appreciated, one guy did mention sending them back 48k 24bit microsoft wav or broadcast wav files.

Synced up with the clicky thing, of course

thanks in advance,
Michael Lee

Broadcast waves will load with timestamp info and can sync up with DAWs that support it (I think most do).

Alternatively, you can just export a wave that's the full length of the track so the start times are all identical.

A common format to use in doing cross product/platform is OMF file export/import.  I've used this format numerous times with good results.  For more information, go into Sonar Help and do a search on OMF Export or Inport for the specifics.  Typically you will use OMF type 2, and if you're exporting to older Pro Tools systems - you have to split stereo tracks into dual mono.  There are other considerations; such as how to process archived tracks or groove clips (if you use them), and write as RIFF Wave or AIFF depending on platform.  In Sonar 8.5.3 Help there is a good section called "Importing OMF Projects" - it does a good job of explaining what is and what isn't exported and imported.  From my experience, it's a reasonable format to work with; tracks and clip positions, slip edits, cross fades, sample rate and bit depth are brought over if embedded in the original OMF file.

Be mindful of tempo and tempo changes in a song, as they aren't embedded (at least not by Sonar anyway), and if I recall correctly - markers aren't embedded either.  OMF's multi-track format makes it a lot more intuitive to work with multiple people and be able to keep the scratch as well as keeper tracks that each person contributes.   Trying to do this with mp3 or WAV files gets messy fairly quick; being able to transfer numerous tracks in stereo or mono is the way to go as far as I'm concerned.  Good luck!

wow that too complicated just get teh bpm and have them export a seperate click track to you with teh project load it in at zero line up the tracks with teh click and record your parts and ship them back they can use teh click transients to line to back up into the project
