How do I import Logic PCM(*wav) files into Sonar Studio 7

Hi everbody,
Our band mate moved to Hollywood to go to music school. He recently sent us some Windows PCM(*wav) audio files recorded in Logic. I can play them on a sound editor program but can't import them into my Sonar Studio 7. Any idea on what I need to do? Thanks for advice & ideas.

Strange, they ought to import right over.  I don't know SONAR Studio 7 - maybe the bit depth or rate is too high for it?  Is Sonar limited to 24 bit?  If the PCM files are too high rate/depth for SONAR, you could bounce them down in your editor and then use them.  Or upgrade to a less limited version of SONAR. X1 esstentials is $100 - probably less to upgrade.  It does 32 bit files.

I doubt it.  Even Sonar Home Studio 6 could import 32-bit wav files.

You'll probably need an editor if they don't import straight in.  If they are waves, they should import... highlight the track click FILE>IMPORT AUDIO and they should come in.... if not they are not recognized as true waves or MP3's so then you need to convert from their original format to waves that are recognized by sonar.

I've seen some converters on the market that convert from anything to anything. You just gotta google that file format and you'll find one.

Why would a company make an audio software product that doesn't export waves?

no, sonar 7 studio is not limited in any way as far as wave files bit depth or sampling rate.

I agree that it should import straight in if it's a wave file and if it doesn't then there must be something that logic is doing to it that makes it a non-standard wave file.

google r8brain and use it to verify the those files and you might even be able to convert them to standard wave files using that program which would then, theoretically import into sonar.

    Thanks everyone,
I can usually import wave files but these will not import. I worry about converting them because when I did the sound quality was not good. Frustrating.

If you can bring them up in an editor, try re-saving them from within that editor. Because they are uncompressed files there should be no loss in quality as long as you're not changing sample rate or bit depth.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

    Hi friends again,
My friend who has a recent Sonar Producer edition imported the tracks for me and gave them to me in a bundle. I opened them up alright but to my surprise some of them loaded in stereo and some in mono form. Any easy way to convert the stereo tracks to mono? Thanks for your help.

The answer depends on what's in the "stereo" tracks. Although they appear as "stereo" they may just be dual mono- having exactly the same info in the left and right channel.

    Several ways to check.

    1. Use your ears.
    2. Insert Channel Tools, choose mid-side mode, and turn down the mid. If you hear anything in the sides the tracks are probably truly mono
    3. If you don't have Channel Tools (think that was a Sonar 8 thing), Voxengo MSED will do the same and is free
    4. If you have Ozone or Waves PAZ or something like it there are meters that show how "wide" a track is- mono vertically, stereo horizontally

Now that you know what you have, what do you want?
    • If the original track is dual mono and you want mono, simply right click on the clip and choose Convert to Mono
    • If the original track is stereo and you want one mono track, do the same
    • If the original track is stereo and you want two separate mono tracks (one from the left and one from the right), you will be better off using Edit>Bounce to Track, or File->Export->Audio. Either way you can choose your source (the track you want to pull from) and channel format (in this case Split Mono)
    Hope that helps!

    Peace,

    Tunes
