How do I use Asio4all??
I'm using the MAudio Audiophile USB, with the most current asio drivers. I'm having crackle and pop problems with SONAR that disappear when I turn off "use multi-processing". I've read a couple of threads hear that say these problems can sometimes be aleviated by using ASIO4ALL. I've downloaded the most recent ASIO4ALL, but I'm not sure how to go about installing/using it instead of my Audiophile drivers. Anyone have experience in switching from one to the other? Thanks, Rob

Just install the ASIO4ALL driver. On Sonar then, - select ASIO driver mode (on Sonar Options->Audio->Advanced -tab) - enable ASIO4ALL I/O drivers (on Sonar Options->Audio->Drivers -tab) - restart Sonar when asked - set the ASIO4ALL options through ASIO4ALL Control Panel (launch it from Sonar Options->Audio->General -tab or by running it from Start menu (or Desktop)) Junski

Hi Rob, ASIO4ALL is not the best solution to your problem. It's a bandaid fix... at best. If there's a problem with multi-core performance on your DAW, you need to resolve that problem. ASIO4ALL "wraps" a card's WDM driver to create an ASIO driver. It suffers from slightly higher latency than the stock driver. (This can be measured with the CEntrance tool) You're always better off running the stock ASIO driver... unless there is no ASIO driver (which is the whole reason why ASIO4ALL was created).

+1 for what Jim said. Your original up to date. latest drivers from maudio are way better than ASIO4all. I would solve your problem and it should not be that hard to solve. A few tweaks here and there should and will do it. 1. What are your settings for the maudio in sonar?? Dont use the settings that were defaulted to you. You need to adjust them for ultimate performance 2. do you have the latest drivers for your maudio from maudio's web site? 3. what driver modes have you tried (WDM - ASIO) Try both 4. Check for IRQ conflicts that should keep you busy and give us some info at the same time Cj

I probably WON'T be trying Asio4All By the way, I'm using Sonar 6.2 - XP Pro - 32 bit... and have had this issue since first upgrading to this system. It's kind of random, and as I said the problem disappears by just unchecking "use Multi-Processing", but I'm steamed that I can't use something I thought I was upgrading to (dual core). Changing/raising the audio buffers in SONAR does no good at all. 1. My Asio settings are set in my MAudio control panel, with no control in SONAR. My only setting in the MAudio control panel is latency which I've set at 256 which is not the lowest, but any higher and the latency bothers me in real-time playing. 2. I have and have installed the latest MAudio drivers from MAudio. 3. I have tried WDM, and DON'T get the same problem... BUT I'm using EastWest's Play software which requires using Asio. (and, yes, this problem also exists when using the older EastWest NI - Kompakt versions) 4. Not sure how to check for IRQ conflicts. I have run that downloadable Latency checker and it tells me I'm fine to record at very low latency with no problems... I let it run for a long while using SONAR and got no latency "spikes". Thanks again for your help, guys. I've been thinking about upgrading to SONAR 8, because I know that SONAR 7 started giving you more options setting buffers and such, so maybe it would help, but I'm waiting just a bit for a couple of updates... Are you running SP2 or SP3 Did you install the MS SP2 multi-core hotfix (KB896256)?

Rob, do the plugs-ins you are using also have multi-core processing options? You may want to try turning those off to see what happens. I had the case of Truepianos conflicting its multi-core processing with that of Sonar. As soon as I turned one of those off, things worked. Of course I chose to leave Sonars multi-core processing on and turn Truepianos multi-core processing off.

Thanks, All, for the responses. I may have found out how to help the problem by further tweaking, as suggested. I was reluctant to raise my latency setting because I am (maybe overly) sensitive to time lag when playing/recording. As it was, I had my MAudio Audiophile USB latency setting set to 256, which gave me a 5.8 msec Sonar Asio Buffer Size - which was really good. I was afraid to raise it any more for fear of this lag... Last night, I raised the latency setting to the next level up (the control panel gives you set increments, you can't just enter a value) to 384, which gives me a 8.7 msec Sonar Asio Buffer size. This is still very good, right? I think I may have been a little crazy thinking that I can hear the difference... but it eliminates the few cracks and pops I was experiencing so I'm going to live with it for a while and try to "forget" that I've added some time to the latency. I really do appreciate all of the feedback. Jim (or anyone else), about the MS (KB896256) hot fix... This could probably help my system, but I read Ms information about it and thought "this is easy", but then got really nervous when it went off on talking about editing your Registry file and such... is this necessary? Isn't applying the Hot Fix enough? I do not want to start editing any Registry, but couldn't figure out whether MS was talking about the Hot Fix or another issue. Again, Guys, thanks for all your help! Rob

USB-ASIO driver behind the following link is maybe the best ASIO driver available for USB audio interfaces (in most cases). http://www.usb-audio.com/ There's a trial version available. Junski

alesis photon x25 runs better on asio4all here Two potential reasons 1. The WDM version of the Photon's driver works better than ASIO. (Not too tough to imagine as the Photon's ASIO driver is terrible ) 2. Using ASIO4ALL results in higher latency. Thus, it may appear to be achieving better performance at a given buffer size. You need to compare performance at equal latency... (The CEntrance tool is helpful)
