How do you create a track automation envelope for a MIDI controller?
Is there a way to create a track automation envelope for a MIDI controller? I am trying to automatic some parameters on my SampleTank 2. According to SampleTank's Manual, it says "Since SampleTank 2 provides more than 10,000 parameters, it’s not possible to assign all of them to the standard sequencers automation." But it also says "However, any of the SampleTank 2 parameters can be automated via its built-in MIDI CTL function." Basically, I can assign any SampleTank parameter to a certain MIDI controller number, say controller 25, from its interface. So now that the parameter is linked to MIDI controller 25, is there a way I can create an automation envelope linked to the MIDI controller 25 to automate this parameter? Thanks in advance.

On the MIDI track you want the envelope, click the middle mouse button or press 'T' to bring up the HUD. There you'll see the edit filter that probably reads "Clips". Click on that and you can then select automation. There you'll see several common MIDI CCs and if you want more they are available via the MIDI.... option in the same menu. If you need more than the choices there, I think that can be done via the instrument definition dialogue but I'd have to delve a bit deeper into that to be sure. Perhaps someone already knows. I'm sure brundlefly would but I haven't seen him post in a couple of months now.

I've made the following assignments in the sampletank interface: Then on the MIDI track that I'm trying to automate, I created the following automation envelope using middle+mouse+button > clips > automation > midi: The automation envelope that is created does not change the paramter as I want.

Hmm. Looks like that should work to me, but having said that IIRC there was something about MIDI cc envelopes and soft synths mentioned on here before. I can't remember but it might have been that they didn't work using instrument tracks and the track had to be split into two or had to be on the audio track of the soft synth, if that's even possible? I don't use soft synths enough to know the answer but I'm sure someone here will. Sorry.

Let me apologize in advance but I would like to bump this one last time just in case someone knows how to fix this and hasn't seen this thread yet.

Sounds like there are one or more bugs submitted about this - (mine was CWBRN-7255 and is "Under Investigation" for a few months). You might have a look at this thread: http://forum.cakewalk.com...508014&mpage=1#2509117 as these are likely related. Have you tried MIDI channel 1? That works for me. Sometimes creating the envelope on CH1 and then "reassigning the envelope" to a channel other than 1 works, too (workaround?). (CW - Please fix for us! Some of us still use hardware synths and MIDI and/or softsynths that use MIDI rather than VSTI COM interfaces)

OK... so you want to automate a midi function or the parameter of a synth or FX.... it can be done. I have used this to automate the POWER knob in a drum synth called Jamstix and did this in Music Creator 4 which is a very basic DAW. It should translate easily to any other FX or synth that has automatable parameters. In JS2 this knob controls how hard the drummer plays... laid back or rocking hard..... automating it is essential to having the drummer change the drive and feel of the song to add realism. With out it automated, the drummer plays at the same energy level and the part is boring. THis might take a bit of translation since it it referring to Jamstix (JS2) but take this as a guide. Replace JS2 with your synth and see if this will work for you: Here's how you automate the power knob in JS2. I assume that you have JS2 functioning properly. For my purposes...I start with a normal project (1 audio & 1 MIDI track) I insert JS2 into track 1, and fill track 2 MIDI with beats and tell JS2 to follow midi. At the end of the recording process, I complete adding envelopes for volume & panning. At this point the project is effectively mixed and the only thing left to do is to automate JS2. Add a new midi track to the project. Set the output of the track to JS2...input doesn't matter. click OK Right click in the track pane and select envelopes > create track envelopes > MIDI > OK In this new "Midi envelope" window select type = NRPN value = power level channel doesn't seem to matter...I leave at 1.... click OK You should now see a (in my case) a light blue envelope line in the new midi track. Open JS2 in the window and notice the power knob is set to the relative starting level based on where the knob was when you opened the envelope. Right click on the envelope and select add node. insert as many nodes as you need...you can delete nodes with the same process. NOW... drag a node up or down. If the line between nodes is flat....the power level will remain constant, if the line is rising or falling the power will increase or decrease accordingly. I like to keep my power level constant in a verse and raise to another constant level in the choruses. At this point...you should be set up and ready to go....so be sure the RD box in JS2 is green (located in the upper right corner) and click PLAY. JS2 should now follow your automation nodes. I hope this helped you get it going.

I can't believe it, so it WAS a bug after all... thanks so much mcdroid for pointing it out. Cakewalk, FIX THIS!!!
