How do you feel about discounting software

Sometimes it works in your favour and sometimes it feels like you just got cheated. You buy a product at half price or less and feel that you won the lottery but on the other hand you may have recently bought something at full pop only to see it being flushed out at a greatly reduced price.

I have to say I'm pretty conflicted and I don't know if it helps or hurts software piracy. How do you all feel about it?

Regards, John

Don't know...  I only use pirated software because I get to use a parrot and an eyepatch.

I count on it. I am usually a year or two (or more) behind as the older stuff costs less. However, I cannot stand DVDs that are released, then, a couple of months later released again as the "Special Edition". I figure there ought to be a law that states, if you do that, you have to discount (significantly) the new edition for current owners.

The way I see it, if you buy the latest and greatest, you are paying a premium for that. It's a given that the same product will be available cheaper 6 months to a year later.
I rarely buy cutting edge. I'm bleeding edge all the way. I'll wait for the price to drop to where I feel that value equals benefit, and/or I can actually afford the thing. If the price drops after that, hey, those guys got a great deal.
When I feel that the return is acceptable for the the investment, I'll bite. It's entirely my call. It was worth it at the time. No regrets.
I don't have a clue as to how that affects the piracy market.
If a legit developer offers a killer deal, I'm all for it, but I don't willingly support thievery.

you bring up a good point, and we have all been victims at one point or another.
i sometimes try to figure out how they come up with these numbers for software, games, movies, exc.

i must live in a cave,at what point did it start costing companys 20.00 dollars a disk to produce a copy.
you figure the money that is made at the box office, and then rental(netflix)
i went to buy a movie the other day and it was 24.99

    i said o my god,this is the real piracy..lol

I have no problems with the super deals and great pricing.

I bought Melodyne Plug in and a few  months later they came out with an upgrade...next version.  They sent an email with a link to a free upgrade, and I guess it was about 6 months later upgraded me again to the new Editor as well. Can't complain.

I have picked up quite a few new (to me) things when the companies put them on specials or clearance sales..... they work and sound fine, so yeah..... I like it.

There is a Murphy's Law for this as well.

There will be a sale the day after you just bought the product...

    This!

Early adoption is a costly business with any technology.

By the time I've figured out if something is worth having the bugs have been ironed out, it's cheaper and the likelihood if it has hung around for a little while it's likely there is some substance in the marketing that sounded so loud when it was launched.

I've bought very few things that haven't been worth the money I paid for them and I often pick up the real bargains so I don't generally feel affected when stuff goes on sale.

Pretty much all software is $ valueless aside from the use you get from it after you've bought it anyway as there's often no way of transferring a licence aside from a few exceptions.  I like and own a few of those exceptions too, i.e. UAD, Reason, etc. as a result they tend not to be included in 'no brainer' type sales.  I like the idea too that I've been a Reason user for several years and can still get the total price I paid for it including upgrades back for it tomorrow.  It still offers more value to me in use than it's cash value though so I ain't selling.

Piracy is unrelated to the cost of anything, it's primarily a case of whether you find theft appealing or acceptable to get what isn't yours at any price.

To be clear, I don't in any way condone theft. Everything on my machine was purchased or freeware. I even pay for the freeware if it's good.

I do get frustrated by huge price fluxuations as it makes it hard to plan ahead. Unlike many of you, I have to scrimp and save to get almost anything and can never seem to get in sync with the price point. When things get blown out I'm never sure if it's to attract new customers, because it's a product being abandoned or if it indicates the next version is on the horizon.

The software forum has been very helpful in this respect. Many of the ol' hands are great at giving the heads up when a good buy comes along.

I think many more of us are in that boat than it appears.

I absolutely agree about the Software forum too, it's another gem of this resource.

Most of the music related software I've purchased was on sale.

I believe EZDrummer was full price but nearly every adpak was ~%50 off.
