guitarmikeh How do feel about others mixing your music? I also think my mixes are fantastic just how I mix them. Then I give it to someone else to have a shot and I learn my lesson. Lesson being ....I have more to learn. An example would be a song I just had bapu produce and than my mixmix MORE PRECIOUS THAN RUBIES. His mix was waaaaay better than mine. And if bapu is mixing better than me..... Then you know how bad I need to learn that says it right there Jk...(sorta)

I think it's always good to mix it yourself first THEN let someone else have a crack at it. Like Mooch said, you sometimes learn you still have a lot to learn!

I had someone mix my stuff and I wasn't happy at all with what they did. Their technical skills were there alright, but they just couldn't grasp what I was trying to do creatively.

Even if someone else is only as good at mixing as you are, the end result could still end up being better than if you'd mixed it yourself. We tend to fixate on the cool parts, the hard parts we struggled to get right, or some neat effects. Somebody else just sees a collection of components waiting to be assembled and they will invariably find different cool parts than you thought you had. Anyone learning to mix (that's all of us) would do well to buddy-up with someone else who's at a comparable skill level and trade projects with them. Or if you don't know anyone, hire a pro (or just a more experienced mixer) to mix your project. When you're paying somebody you're the boss and you can reasonably expect them to explain in detail why they did what they did and what plugins they used, and to hear the mix on their (presumably better) speakers in their (presumably better) room. Any local pro or semi-pro studio would be amenable to such an arrangement. Even Charles Dye, of Mix it Like a Record fame, rents himself out for consultation.

http://www.shakingthrough.com/ I'm sure most of you know or heard of the wheathervane music / shaking through project. If not above is a link. They provide a pro studio to new artist to record one song. raw tracks and stems are provided for anyone wanting to mix those song. You can post your mix on gearslutz. I've downloaded a few I liked. I think it's a fantastic idea. I think it would be a great idea to do something like that here.

I bought the software so I could mix my music. I wouldn't mind hearing what someone else might do with it but I'd still go with my mix. Good or bad, it's mine and down the road I want to hear what I did- not what somebody else did with it.

I would always welcome a second take on my mixes. I have taken feedback on my mixes at times...and other times I have decided to still do things another way. I am by no means putting out songs like a chicken lays eggs so it is almost a non issue with me at the moment. I am looking more at getting it right at the mike.

I think it's interesting to hear someone elses take on it. I've had one of mine mixed by another forum member and it turned out great, absolutely loved it. It wasn't radically different overall, but certainly had a certain something that I didn't even know was missing until I heard the re-mix. The added benefit was that as it was also done in Sonar, I also now have the .cwb file so I can see what was done and use that as a learning tool. There's definitley a limit to what I would pay, mostly because there are always things that I would be better off spending my hard-earned on than my half-baked song ideas, but if ever someone just wanted to have a go at one, then there's nothing to lose really. It's not like you even have to accept their version as "the" version if it isn't quite how you envisioned it.

guitarmikeh How do feel about others mixing your music? As long as we can talk and communicate and that person was not trying to make me sound like, (or look like) the Sex Pistols, I would be just fine! I probably would hire Bapu at this point. I don't think I have seen, or found anyone do a better job ... on more different things and music ... that I have with Bapu's amount of work! I really think that the trick of it all, is making sure that you get 100% of the essence of that person ... and the rest doesn't matter. This is one of the reasons why some folks in metal or other areas, sound so much alike ... because these folks do not have enough individuality to be able to be "themselves" that they have to be something that is "out there!" and doesn't exist! Bapu is doing a lot of different things, and I have some respect for that and then some ... it takes more guts to do that ... than words can appreciate. Sorry to embarass you Bapu.

Not sure about SMB's stuff..I might be a bit too 'precious' about that. I do the occasional 'rocker' on me lonesome though, and I'd love to hear what someone else would do with those.
