How do you guys cope with...

Android updates...

I'm used to iPhones but when we moved to the US, I picked up the cheapest cell phone available which I recently upgraded to a LG smart phone.

As unhappy as I've been with Apple since Tim Cook took over for Jobs, and as cool as certain features on that new smart phone are,  ever since I finally went on and updated the software a week or two ago, I am reminded that there were big advantages to using an iPhone.

One of which is that I was not pestered with software updates on a (practically) daily basis.

Seems almost overtime I pick up the phone or even just look at it, there's a pop up advising me that there's an Android update available.

I didn't think this was possible, but my Android phone almost make our Samsung Smart TV's upgrade cycle look reasonable - even though the TV isn't quite as amiable, as it doesn't really give us an option NOT to update and just kick us out or block the access to apps.

Heck, even our car had to be updated recently, as hackers had found a way to seriously compromise security of that line of Jeep.

Some days, I really hate technology...

Ha, well....I went the opposite direction years ago and dumped Android, because I found Apple so much easier to use, update and the apps are always out first.  I see that I have an iOS 9.2 update waiting for me and I have set it up to run tonight, automatically.

Hopefully some one else will have good advice for you, Rain.

Well I get a lot of notifications for Android app updates if that's what you're referring to. Pretty sure there's a way to turn off the notifications in the Application Manager.

That would be my preferred option too. ;) Actually, I had brought in my wife's "old" iPhone and was hoping that they could transfer my line to it, but they said it was not possible.

TBH, I hate talking on the phone and my needs are fairly basic. 95% of all incoming and outgoing calls are to my lovely lady. But the old cell phone was so unreliable and lame that an upgrade was pretty much mandatory.

But I'm still using the iPhone for the rest - taking pictures, listening to music, etc.

Come to think of it - the easiest way to make up for all the issues we had with the Smart TV was to start using the Apple TV for Hulu, Netflix and all the rest. We never use the TV software except to access Amazon video. And we usually fight with it every time.

So, yeah, iPhone anytime if it was an option. :)

I've had an Android phone for years, but only two updates during that whole time.  Maybe you're referring to the individual apps which can get updated nightly depending on the coders!  (As mentioned above, you can turn these notifications off.)

This latest one featured a security update. And they're usually big fat updates, which require rebooting the phone.

As for apps, yeah, I definitely need to turn those notifications down. I just looked and even though I barely use any app and don't have many installed, and in spite of spending so much time updating everything, I do have one which could be updated.

I do eventually let the updates do their thing.

Once a month, I wipe all the notifications that have piled up. I don't update anything unless I have to.

At least with Android you don't have to worry about an update completely disabling your phone if something goes awry. If there's a silver lining to my late wife's passing, it's that I no longer have to do iOS support.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I ignore them. Most updates are just the app wanting to phone home and deliver data about your phone and usage. You don't think they come for free do you?

Yup - I have some 25 Android updates waiting with at least one a week adding to it since I've reset my phone to its factory setting. John's right - ignore them.

Not coming free is one thing - the intrusive publicity that creeps in where you least expect it does make me miss my iPhone though. Like, I'm going to play online Bingo crap anytime soon. Meh...

My wife and I both got iPhones when we finally relented and stepped into the world of inevitable technology. I also have an iPad. It didn't take me...and my curmudgeonly personality...at all long to come to absolutely hate all things Apple. My wife even less. She now has android phones...for both work and personal usage. I'm sure I'm soon to follow. I detest Apple's business model and will do my damndest not to support it in any way...as soon as it is economically feasible. Only goes to show how different people work differently. As mad at them as I get at times, every time I use my Android phone or that Samsung allegedly "Smart TV", I am reminded of why I switched to Apple products in the first place. Especially for the DAW. The more streamlined + the less option + the less 3rd party apps = the better for me. I hate to have to keep on top of all that stuff and waste time keeping up to date.

I bought an iphone from a private individual mainly because I got a great deal on one with 64gb of memory. I opted for the smaller size because I keep the thing in my pocket most of the time. This was a big mistake since I could have made great use of a larger screen, otherwise I'm really happy with the phone. Haven't ever had any problems with it ( not to minimize you if you have had problems) Updates come seldom and they ask me how I want it installed. I usually opt for having it done at night.
I can watch my webcam on it during the day to check on my house, I can control  equipment for large installations from  it from anywhere in the world. Isn't technology great! Oh and it makes and takes phone calls too.
I still have Amplitube and a few soft synths  but I'm not using those as much as I thought I would.

What probably contributes to the feeling is those constant notifications about any and everything on the home screen - like important information about this app and that thing...

I have a Microsoft phone. £10 a month cheaper than the most basic iPhone, I am very happy with it. Integrates seamlessly with my Windows 10 computers.

The only down side is a few apps are not Windows comparable.

My Mrs. got an iphone 4 before I got my HTC S One Android.
I'm sure glad I didn't go with the iphone, because the more I fiddle wth hers, the more I like the HTC better - so much better. I will say though, that the sound is better on the Apple, but otherwise I just don't see the attraction. I find it to be more of a huge PITA than anything else, inevitably leading me to quick and utter frustration.

Besides, I've never been one to buy the latest and greatest anything - usually because over the years I found that if the crowd goes for 'this' then I always seem to be happier going for 'that' instead.

I'm always amazed how on TV, everyone with a Cell phone is always holding an iphone - only - ever.
