How do you import, open, reconvert OMF file from Pro Tools into Sonar (8.5 or X1) ?
I did a session yesterday in a ProTools studio (on Mac) and we converted all files to OMF so I could bring projects back into Sonar. Maybe I'm not doing it right... In Sonar I selected Import - Audio, then went to the folder and selected all files there and clicked OK. Result was about twice the number of tracks, some were there 4 times... I get weird names and have to go one by one to reidentify (not easy to identify if it's bass-drum internal or bass-drum outside....). Plus it looks like punching are hearable (they weren't in the Protools studio). And I get empty tracks in between. How should I open that ? Double click the OMF file ? Copy everything but the OMF file ? I did something similar recently (but I don't think it was converted in OMF as I don't see anything with an OMF extension... All I know is that it was made with Nuendo. But it was like a snap ! Just import, select all tracks in an audio folder, clicked OK and everything was lined correctly, tracks names were there, and so on. (I was not on that session - don't know what they have done exactely, but it worked). I'm trying to get this info of course. Thanks, Rob

Hi Rob, I also work in a studio that has ProTools so I often have to bring home OMF files to complete work on. Here's where to start. OPEN Sonar Double click on the OMF file. It will ask you for a couple of things. 1) dialog box will ask for the tempo and the sample rate plus bit rate. 2) after this is satisfied, you will be asked to point Sonar to where the files exists (if you allowed the OMF to put in a separate folder). Once it has been directed there, it will "unpack" the OMF. From here, it should be set up the same as the ProTools session. I have to note from here that stereo files from ProTools will show up as split mono files in Sonar (hence the appearance of twice as many wave files). Hope this helps!

Arlen, thank very much, I will try this out for sure and let you know :-) One thing though: one of the 4 projects we did, I do not have the tempo... as the guide track in this case was an audio file we imported in Pro Tools, so for this one, I don't have the tempo. What should I do when asked for tempo ? Also, not 100% sure I get it: do you mean that once SONAR launched, I double click the OMF in Windows Explorer, or after selecting ''Import-Audio'' ? Then before doing so, I assume I first create a new project and name it, or not ? Sorry if my questions seem basic, ;-) Thanks again :-) Rob

More then likely the tempo was defaulted at 100 (which is most common). I would start there and see if it's all in place. If it isn't, you can always close (without saving of course) and reopen it. Had that happen once. We thought it was one tempo, but found out later that it was off by 10. Used the method I mentioned here. Got through just fine.

Sorry. I didn't read your entire post. I usually open Sonar first, go to file Open and locate the OMF file. Once you double the file, it will start the dialog. From my experience, it should initiate it's own project (but you might have Sonar set up slightly different from my in which I don't set each new project in it's own folder). If it doesn't, name it and set up the folder for the new file. Let me know if this helps.

Hi Arlen, Indeed, I now tried another one for which tempo is officially (as recorde under Pro Tools) at 90. Everything worked perfectly (I can now at least get track names in the track pane, different takes are side by side as expected, except Sonar still place tempo at 100 bpm !... If I place a click, it seems to play at 90 though (am I crazy ??...) If I change manually to 90 bpm in Sonar, it seems to keep same (correct) speed... Which is why I wonder if I should instead create a project, choose tempo I need, then proceed how you suggested ? (or maybe it would still create a new project ?) Many thanks again :) Rob
