How do you keep a Todo list for your projects?

I'm looking for some advice. I know many people that frequent this forum have great ideas and much more experience than I have.

Q: How do you keep a list of Todo's for your project?

Here's a sample scenario:
  • I'm writing and/or arranging a project and during a playback, I notice that the French Horns need some tweaking at measures 32 - 36. I want to remember to come back to it later without interrupting what I'm working on now.
My solutions:
  1. Put notes in the project info window, or
  2. Keep a separate text file or spreadsheet with my todos
I wish I could put a note at measure 32 in the track view, but the best I can come up with is to change the background color of the clip so I know it needs attention.

Does anyone have any better ideas?

Thanks,

Dave

WordPad. In fact, each project has at least one corresponding WordPad document which contains a variety of notes, tips, reminders, etc. Allows me to review each overall project away from my main DAW or laptop DAW. Plus, obviously, there is immediate access at the DAW machine whenever needed. Works perfectly for me.

I would change the clip's name to "Need some tweaking." I have many short clips in a project and those that are complete and don't need further editing have just "O" (representing a circle which means correct or perfect in my country), those whose notes need to be humanized (randomized) later have just "%," etc. etc. Clip names and background colors are both visually very helpful.

    Tak T.

Sometimes I use markers (if what I need to type is not very long) - something like "French horns need editing on track x", or "may need to brighten the brasses on track x", etc.  At least that way you can use the marker list to go directly to where the edits are needed.

Sounds like a feature suggestion. A really nice feature would be a sticky note that could be pasted onto the track, like comments in Excel, with the ability to hide and search the notes.

I used this for a while, but I am not even sure it will work in recent Sonar versions.

I too recommend using Markers at selected times and it helps a lot....
If they are too long, you can pull up the marker list and look at the time the marker is and what it says....
This has helped me a lot when I don't want to interrupt my workflow:)

I do this too. OneNote is my DAW bible. I have sonar tips from these forums, my own learnings which i tend to have to reinvent otherwise (how to wire up my vocoder), chords and lyrics, song ideas, chord progressions,  set lists, etc, as well as project track notes, to do's etc. Syncs with my tablet and phone. Awesome tool. One thing i would love to see is a window in sonar so a user could use the windows app of their choice (One Note, Excel, Word, whatever) inside Sonar (dock in the multidock, for example).

I usually just use the combo of notes and a text file.  I just write down the measures in the text doc that need tweaking, along with whatever their tweaks are.

I keep it all in order by measure, generally, but in any case, I write down however much info is needed to identify both the location and the particular things needing to be done there.

Great ideas here, thanks.    I used to use something like the sticky-notes vst plugin, (called "DXPad, I think) but that got irritating since the notes were usually in the way when they weren't being used for a reminder.   I have been using text files and scraps of paper, preserving markers for Rehearsal Numbers, but I like the marker as a reminder too ...

Combination of markers and external notes in notepad/wordpad, whatever.

I like the external notes because I can easily print or pop open Wordpad without starting up DAW software.

I don't use clip names because clip operations can destroy the info, eg.  bounce to clip

Fur shur markers, cloning/naming tracks, adding project info,...

Reasons I use Excel as well:
each sheet is essentially unlimited in size
I have one page that has each project alphabetically listed
with dates of editing and what I have done and to do

Each tab can be named: project title, activity, song,...
some projects need more space for random thoughts /lyrics / info

The whole spreadsheet is searchable: quickly find all the notes about horns, bass settings,...

Do not have to have sonar open with a specific project to add notes, review, plan.

Second major tool is notepad.  I have 5 notepad files that auto-open when the computer is started. Each for quick notes per topic: today, story ideas, projects, lyrics, and misc.
Easy to quickly display to add to, refer to, and copy from these files to any other program.

If you use note pad (and have a recent version of MS Office) you really should check out OneNote.  It is basically notepad with a lot of the functionality you find in excel (tabs, searchability, etc.)

I have used the free One Note app on my iPad, my iPhone and my Galaxy Tab - everything syncs via One Drive cloud sync. I have One Note on my Daw (not a powerhouse by any means). Pretty much just keep it on the Galaxy Tablet and my Daw now. I disable my wifi when working on my daw, but enable it otherwise which allows One Note to sync. Nice to have access to daw project notes etc, on my tablet.

Old school here I keep a studio log on the recording desk and just jot down what needs to be done, simple but it gets the jobs done.

MS OneNote, or a different note app called One Note?  Either way my phone is dumb as I'm not iInclined.  By portability I mean between applications (not to be confused with apps).

MS OneNote (and office) on my DAW. Freebie apps of same are available on android and iOS. Stripped versions but fully functional. I do all entries etc on my DAW in the full soft, access everything on my tablet or other devices.
As for portability between applications, I think OneNote is the ultimate integrator - I put Excel spreadsheets, word documents, tables, all kinds of pictures, html, screenshots etc into OneNote. I don't do anything/much the other way, but can't imagine it'd be difficult to go from, eg, OneNote into word or excel.
(Sorry about the space - definitely talking about the Microsoft program and its associated apps)

I have OneNote ... cool tool, but it's heavyweight (IMO) and not terribly portable.

I even use vim quite bit

I have used the free One Note app on my iPad, my iPhone and my Galaxy Tab - everything syncs via One Drive cloud sync. I have One Note on my Daw (not a powerhouse by any means). Pretty much just keep it on the Galaxy Tablet and my Daw now. I disable my wifi when working on my daw, but enable it otherwise which allows One Note to sync. Nice to have access to daw project notes etc, on my tablet.

No problem on space from my perspective.  It's a discussion about potential tools to accomplish what was asked in the OP AFIAC.

I have no doubt that OneNote interops nicely with other MS applications.

Unfortunately, my head leaks badly, and has both a bit of wobble, and it makes noise when I go too fast.

I'm old school too.  Yellow legal pad next to the keyboard with notes scribbled randomly all over it.  Not exactly "searchable" like OneNote, but a lot more organic for me than using another program on the comp.

These are all great ideas! Thanks everyone for responding. I use OneNote for a lot of things, and was thinking it would be a good tool for this too. I store my notebooks on OneDrive so I can access them from my tablet, PC or phone. Looks like that's the path for me!

And I like the tips about using markers. I've been only use them to mark sections of the composition. Why didn't I think to mark areas that need attention?

This is what I love about this community. People really try to be helpful. Much appreciated.

P.S There is an Android and an iOS version of OneNote too. Another similar tool is Evernote.

Hey, sven450! We must have been separated at birth (I hope this imagery is not too disturbing for you)! I, too, use a yellow legal pad (must be yellow, not white, because white glares).

I enjoy the personal touch of seeing my own handwriting, odd but clear-to-me symbols, notations and scribbled illustrations. There are pen gestures that are simple, fluid and intuitive and instantly available as they occur to you that are either impossible or ridiculously time-consuming to replicate by keyboard in a computer programme.

Also, you can begin immediately, having opened nothing more than the cap of your pen. So I'm old-school like you and Bob Bone.
