How do you record with and external mic

Now im not quite sure what a MIDI is but i opened a audio track to record vocals over a track and i keep getting the error message saying "Unable to open audio record device. Device may not support the current project's audio format or may be in use." I've been to the link it tells me to go to and attempted to install the hotfix yet i might have either not installed it right or it didn't work. Just tell me how to use a mic that plugs into the jack in the computer to record in an audio track if thats even possible.

    since you're using the onboard soundcard (the jack in the computer) you probably need to switch to WASAPI or MME driver mode.  in MC, go to OPTIONS>AUDIO and change the driver mode to WASAPI if it is available, if it is not available, change to MME.  it will ask if you want to run a test on the soundcard, let it.
